Avoid Costly Engine Oil Leaks - Toyota Tacoma, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser - How To Replace PCV Valve

  • Routine engine maintenance that's often overlooked on 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, and Tacoma. We show you how to remove and replace the PCV, or Positive Crankcase Ventilation valve. A clogged PCV valve can cause your engine to run sluggish, create damaging crankcase sludge, and allow internal pressure to cause major oil leaks.

Great video. Quick note on 10k oil changed interval with synthetic. Several reputable sources are strongly advising 5k oil changes even with synthetic, they speak of first hand experience with engine damage using the 10k interval after the 100k mark. "The car care nut" you tube channel has several videos about the "why", he is toyota master tech. Figured I'd mention this as you keep your vehicle long term. Love the vids!

FYI guys, those used PCV valves were still functioning. Back in the day the 'test' was to make sure they still rattle. Many times a soaking with some carb cleaner will bring them back to life. Nowadays, most just replace it because they are a simple $20 part.

    • @WanderlostOverland

Still functioning....yes, but not to their full potential. Best to replace, or clean, them before they don't function and cause damage.

My wife’s Lexus came with “free” oil changes every 10,000 miles the first year. I took over the maintenance after that. After seeing how filthy the oil got after 10,000 miles, I reduced the frequency to about 7000 miles. By then it’s getting plenty dirty but nowhere near as bad as the 10,000 miles. I service the transmission and other items as well. The Lexus is a Toyota w more options. Great reliable vehicles, but I would never recommend waiting 10k to change oil!

I followed your procedure but added a couple of steps: 1) Sprayed the old PCV with Free All as it was hard to loosen, 2) Torqued the new one to 20 Ft-Lbs per my search of the internet. The old one sounded almost as “free” as the new one, but at only $7.27, I replaced it anyway. Thanks Wanderlost Overland! 🤓

Great video, but as you said should be able to be cleaned out. Yes that part might "only" be 15$. But that is not the "only" part that is "only" 15$ that should be maintained. add 10 parts that can be restored with some cleaning instead of buying new. Now we talking 150$ in parts if we going to use that logic. Obviously if the part is no longer functioning at all then it needs to be replaced. But I am overhauling a 1999 J90 Prado atm. And if I would use this logic I would have spent 170$ on just lug nuts if I bought new instead of cleaned the treads etc.

I put a JLT oil separator on my 2020 Runner right after I bought in new in 2020. It catches all the oil and fuel blow by that comes out of the PVC system before it gets routed back into the intake for engine to burn. I don't believe you should force your engine to eat what it pukes out the PCV system. I empty the catch can about every 3k miles. Makes for a cleaner engine IMO.
