I drew every day for a month straight to discover that practice doesn't make perfect, instead the secret to getting better at drawing can be applied to almost any skill you want to learn.
In this video I walk you through my sketchbooks for this 30 days drawing challenge and show you the art fail that made me accidentally discover the right way to get better at drawing.
I'm also experimenting with video making and storytelling. I'm still bad at this youtube thing so you'll probably find it cringy (at least I do) - but hopefully one day we'll look back and appreciate how far we came.
Remember to have fun!

As a begginner artist, I am grateful to see your revelation as now I can take apart my drawings and study the specifics of what I need to get better at rather than- "*draw more I'll get better eventually*". It might seem obvious on paper but it's one thing to know a thing, and another to understand it. Much love
I'm glad you found it helpful!
I think a good approach I am finding is to go through cycles of:
1. Have fun with a small project
2. Then take time to look back on it with a critical eye to note what you feel you'd like to improve
3. Study and practice that specific thing for a couple of weeks
- and repeat
@@massa_art that sounds actually really good, i'll try and apply that. It seems like (or at least I imagine) you have a goal in sight instead of treading water all the time. Thanks!
I'm a relatively new artist and I think you nailed it with the "purpose makes perfect" conclusion. I've been calling this "deliberate practice", but it's the same idea. It's not just drawing every day that makes progress, it's intentional pursuit of improvement by focusing on weak areas and gaining knowledge, technique, or dexterity/coordination to strengthen those areas.
It's not an obvious one at first though isn't it?
This was very inspirational! It is hard work to get there, but seeing you push through it and achieve results was a gift to us all. Thank you for sharing this journey. Great job developing a style, too.
🙏 i'll keep trying to improve. Glad to be able to share the journey with you all!
I've been really drilling myself on fundamentals and portrait and anatomy drawings since february, I think it's really about time I try to devote myself to some kind of project.
Oh yeah, from the sounds of it you're in the perfect spot where having a specific, well-defined project can force you to challenge yourself and take the best out of practice you've accumulated so far. I hope you'll give it a shot!
Neat, appreciate your journey. Studying art is fun but I never enjoyed the figure drawing, myself. I tend to want to rush through the stage where the model looks like a mannequin and get to something more detailed as fast as possible. Every art teacher I read and watched (vilppu, the mark guy with the explosions in every video, and proko) always says to start with the figure drawing though. maybe it's a mainstay of some earlier more classical teachings, who knows
It was completely new to me to be honest. This might be far fetched but the feeling I got was similar to a Kata in martial arts: an exercise designed to build a familiarity with something that will 10x your actual real performance. For Kata that's stance and balance of your body, for Figure drawing it's force and movement of your drawing
I'm happy the algorithm brought your video to my recomendations 😊
I'm happy too! Hope you'll like the next ones!
Very inspiring sketchbook & video. Also some really great exercises you mentioned here! Will definitely save this video to watch back again! Even 30 days of consistent drawing is a lot more difficult then it sounds, life just gets in the way unfortunately! I did something very similar, drawing 1500 hands roughly, over 54 days, but man did I find it exhausting by the end! If you get chance to watch it I would of course love your feedback. Keep up the awesome work!
I couldn't find your video but 1500 hands sounds like a lot!! Do you feel it has levelled up your game, and most importantly, did you enjoy it?
ah no problem, I appreciate you trying though. I have mixed feelings, it definitely helped, but some days it became a chore to draw for the sake of it, because I was commit to the task, so even if I was too tired to take the information in and learn, I would draw any way, so those days were probably not so good haha. But over all I am glad I did it@@massa_art
This inspired me to try something similar, but with watching movies and writing about them. My goal is to learn better how to dissect scripts, concepts and motivations behind scenes. I'll come back if I notice any improvement haha.
That's quite interesting, do you focus on a particular genre?
@@massa_art I'm not really focusing on a genre, but more so on specific directors. For instance, my subject of study right now is Wong Kar-wai, since all his movies share similarities with one another. I believe this would make it easier to practice the ability of recognizing plot points, concepts and patterns.
I've also got really into east asian movies in general recently. The ambience, dialogue and coreography are top notch!
Ok, this video is excellent. So the moment has come : I subscribe ! You succeeded, with only two videos, in convincing me! 💪😁
Thanks for taking the time to comment, also in the other videos, means a lot!!
Very good edit and screen demonstration also. and your drawing skills improved in a month exponentially. Love to see more videos !!!
Let me know what you think of the latest videos!
Hey your videos are great, not cringy. I love art channels and you’ve earned yourself a new subscriber! I appreciate that you’re trying your hand at art and CZcams despite being somewhat uncomfortable in the space, because the insights your discovering are helpful to all of us!
You made my day! 🫶
I found that I had the same problem as you on day three. I couldn't draw anything, I could only copy what was in front of me. I was really great at copying. People loved my portraits and everything else I drew, until I tried to go off the maps and find Atlantis.
It's really difficult to go to the basics that I'd never been introduced to. It's difficult to step away from the art I was doing successfully, especially as it all seemed so good, and people were encouraging me to charge a lot of money for my portraits. But by that point, discovering that I couldn't draw from my head. I stopped all together as I didn't know how to fill in whatever was missing from my art. It's only in the last few years have I found people willing to teach their version of the basics. Learning is difficult though as I lack any and all self confidence, so I need someone to sit with me and tell me when I'm drawing badly, and why that's wrong.
Thanks for sharing 😊 I'm finding it strangely satisfying to discover the "basics" I had never done. What's working for me at the moment is the videos by Proko.
@@massa_art I'm subscribed to Proko too, it's just a lot of information to try and digest though, and then I don't know if I'm interpreting it correctly. I hope you find the worth you're looking for, as your own art originally looks really interesting :)
Maybe drawing what when you cant draw in childhood era. I practice to drawing my long list of childhood imaginations that I can't draw when I was a child.
Now you already study anatomy, you can study color or background composition.
Revisiting your childhood passions is always a good idea 💡 i was obsessed with Dragon Ball as a kid.. maybe i'll do a video about drawing saiyans 😅
This is super inspiring! Thank you for sharing, I might take up a challenge similar to this with one of my older drawings
Thank you! I hope you do!
What a wonderful showcase for the challange you took! Everything about it make me want to understand wmhow you learned from the time you spent.
Thank you! Now the challenge of doing my own Dixit expansion is going to take a while, it's 84 cards!
Dam this video is so well produced and i loved your 30 day journey. Im starting my own drawimg with a purpose today. Ill try to remember to come back and update once i hit 100 drawings.😊
Looking forward to know how it goes!
Really well done video, idea and editing are great. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for taking the time to comment!
hope algorythm helps you!!! gratly produced video!!!
I guess I already owe the algorithm a big thank you for bringing YOU here!
Very cool one Dustin! I liked the new audio effects (in some moments your voice seemed to be closer) and the walking scenes. Also like the concept of purpose makes perfect. Keep going!!
Thanks for the feedback man. I've been indeed experimenting with mics for voiceovers and I'm yet to nail a good setup
Your video was art 💯
The foreshortened leg on day 29 was 🔥
Thank you! It's always satisfying to see progress 😊
That was awesome advice. Thank you 🙏 Someone also said to me recently Practice makes progress :-)
Glad it was helpful! Next video is on inktober, i hope you'll like it too!
good stuff
Glad you liked it!
wow, this is a great video, I was shocked when I looked down and didn't saw some thousands of views
As long as those who watch it enjoy it I'm okay with not being in the thousands views
I just realised this but in the beginning of the video that's the kurzgesat year 12,023 human era calendar!
Good eye! Love their merch
I came back at this video, after having completed one year of consistently drawing. And I’m not pretty sure if I did something wrong, actually, still learning how to learn how to draw (😂).
I did not stop to draw, but i’m not making more notes everyday[example: which day is it? Oh, yeah 155]. Well, after all this time… guess i will need more 25 years to get at the level I want. Probably, i’ve passed from a basic level to a “pre-medium level” or “not-so-basic-level”. That’s what I learned.
First off congratulations for sticking to it for a whole year, it should be celebrated!
But i'd like to stress that progress is not linear, it is exponential. You will overestimate what you can achieve short term and wildly underestimate what you can achieve long term. So just focus on finding a way to make it enjoyable so that you can stick to it long term!
This deserves more attention
Thank you, means a lot to me
Thank you very much for sharing 🥰
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
I'm trying to combat just this thing. I have been drawing and painting for years without actually learning the basics. I have reached a level of proficiency in some areas but i am limited in what i can actually do.
It's a strange feeling isn't it? Feeling proficient but at the same time knowing you're restricted
@@massa_art yeap! And it's hard to admit that you are technically a beginner...lol 🤣
The thumbnail caught my attention.
I hope you weren't let down once you clicked on it 🤞
@@massa_art no, I was impressed.
what a nice channel for a beginner like me.
PS: MA SEI ITALIANO.
Italianissimo!!
PS: grazie, hope you'll like the next videos too!
