As a native Turkish speaker i can say his poems are in vernacular language but they are truly profound. With these simple words he reaches deepest zones of our soul. They make me cry actually. I know some of his poems by heart. I also think his understanding of God has similarities with Ibn Arabi.

We often don't realize we're quoting Yunus when we're doing it.
We have his face literally on the most valuable turkish banknote.
I love his poems. Let me make a translation of one of my favourite:
Owner of the goods, owner of the properties,
Where is the first owner of all of these ?
Goods are fake, properties are lie...
You go there and linger for a while.
This does not have %100 same meaning but it's close to that. I tried to make it look like a proper poem with harmony and rhyme.

I read the translation of one of the poems in which worldly posseeions are said to be a lie and I am struck of the similarity with concept of Maya as in hindu religion which is so much different in many of its principles from Islam
What strikes most is the similarity of sufiism with basic human qualities as propagated by most of world's great religions. Why don't we follow them and iron out the differences. I am really pained seeing how we relish the differences and not similarities
As a Turkish person, this video was one of the best contents which I have ever watched about Yunus Emre and his sufism in English language. Yunus in Turkey's history of literature is like Shakespare for England. I bought a bumper sticker in Turkey about 25 years ago with the words; "Let us love be loved for none of us will be left this Earth". It was a line from a Yunus Emre poem. I'd never heard of him at the time, although I am a Sufi, and was on a pilgrimage to Konya to visit Rumi's Tekke. Since then I've watched two televised versions of his life, and have read much of his poetry. Being a poet myself I was keen to read his work once I'd discovered him. I love your passion for study, and the work you put into your content. I've learned a lot about Islamic history from your channel, and World religion in general, so I sincerely thank you for your efforts. I would love to see all your Sufi material in one book, it would be great reference material in a teaching contest. I don't teach now I'm 67 and retired, but I never stop studying World history, culture, and religion. I have a Phd. in Literary Theory and Cultural History, but as I'm sure you know, travelling, and mixing with other cultures, can teach you things you won't learn at university. May Allah grant you a great reward my brother.

As a non-Muslim who hasn't had the opportunity to study Arabic or related languages, I really appreciate how well you convey these linguistic features and connotations which seem to have been deeply important for the mystical traditions in Islam. Great work as always, thank you for the enlightening content!
not meant to come off as hostile, I just want to note that Turkish, Arabic, and Persian are all unrelated, but did shape each other later on. However, Turkish is a Turkic language and arguably shares similarities (originally) with the same as Japanese, whereas Persian is an indo-Germanic language and Arabic a semitic language.
This is significant when it comes to how certain terms need to be interpreted, and how thoughts are carried over into the different langauge. Within Islamic culture, it is recommended to know at least something about all three of them.
Would it possible to do a video on the Bektashi Order? The only thing I know about is that the Janissaries were followers of it, but nothing else!

I'd love to see some videos of yours from a "literary" or narratological standpoint. Everyone knows about the immense semiological charge of biblical stories, but other religions are rarely talked about from this angle.
For example, many Greek myths have carefully crafted character arcs and tragic structures that make them very human despite how monumental the scope is. In that sense, besides its cosmological and religious character, the myth gets an aesthetic end. I'm told this is also true of the Vedas.
I think that's something that has barely been explored on CZcams, and one that would make a lot of people from different backgrounds interested, since, despite the differences in faith and worship, everyone can admire a good story.

The function of the Asik as described here reminds me of the troubadours of languedoc in medieval France. They traveled and sang of love, apparently as a metaphor for love of God.
Andalusian sufis and others in the Arabic tradition are a known major influence on the development of the troubadour poetry and culture. Occitania is right across the Pyrenees after all

Rumi was originally Iranian Afghan.

Rumi was Iranian and he followed his teacher to turkey.
@Himilo Iran was not created by the British. There is a more than 2500 year written history of Iran. Its boundaries expanded or shrank over the years but there has always been an IRAN.

Yes. You can't mention the Bektashi order, and not discuss Alevism at least a little. I made several Alevi friends when I worked in Turkey for a few years (Turkish, Kormanci, and Zaza) so I am desperate for more discussion about this.

His poems are more understandable than Ottoman Turkish poems from late Ottoman period.

@@juniorjames7076 Late Ottoman Turkish poems contains too much Persian and Arabic words. In fact, Ottoman Turkish wasn't daily speaking language among the Turkish people in Anatolia. It was kinda palace's and elite's language. Modern day Turkish is closer to Old Anatolian Turkish which is real Turkish that comes from Central Asia.

Your video on Nāgārjuna was really impressive. You should make videos on the other great Buddhist philosophers, like Atiśa, Asanga, Vasubandhu, Candrakīrti, Dharmakīrti, and Śāntideva.
The thing with Yunus Emre is that pretty much anyone who can comprehend his poems loves him. He's not just a sufi he's a genius with words and overall loveable person. I'm not a muslim nor a believer in that regard but he just amazes me all the same. Many of his lines are like proverbs here in Turkey, you could be talking with his words without even knowing it :)

Yunus speaks the language of unity. His words come deep into our souls, where there is no world of separation or duality. You can always smell it in any language.😄

ive been reading a lot of classic turkish lately mainly bcuz of my curiosity of history, theology and linguistics and the works of Yunus Emre like you have said is very quintissential when it comes to the Turkish language. It would be helpful to recommend a reliable English translation of the poetry. I've read a couple of different ones but I feel they are somehow lacking. Thank you for what you do so well.
Bad translations is why I haven't been able to connect with Turkish novelists like Orhan Pamuk. Like you said, "....something lacking." Unlike novels by Arab novelists like Naguib Mahfouz who I feel had excellent translations which drew me further into Arab/Egyptian culture. Turkish literary works need BETTER TRANSLATORS! There, I said it! Anyone disagree?

He is on the side of people , not governors and priests . He is not a very successful man , he makes mistakes like all of us . I don't know if reincarnation is real - I think it both is and isn't - but IF there is such a thing it would not only explain why such souls as Filip seems so way much deeper than most of us, but also this persistent feeling that I am watching a real Sheik explaining the sufi mystical faith and teachings every time I watch his videos.
