How To Store Lamp Oil | Dietz Original Oil Lantern

  • How to store lamp oil. I prefer the dietz original oil lantern. Here in Florida some may call it a hurricane lamp. Oil lamps have many names and different looks. But knowing how to properly store lamp oil for long term storage is key. Make sure you store your lamp oil properly or risk leakage, fire or in a worst case an explosion!

    We burn our lamps year round. We live in an antique log cabin and enjoy the ambience. We always called them "coal oil lanterns" but we use the store bought lamp oil. We live in eastern KY and keep it in our basement so never had it freeze. I have about 10 of those containers so I guess I need to repackage them.

    I have multiple oil lamps. Some like the hurricane lamp you showed. And several glass lamps like you seen in houses with the glass shades. I have been collecting them for decades now. And a few are antiques from the late 1800s.
    I store my oil in the original bottles down in my basement. Some have been there for years without any issues.
    I have a few of the metal 5 gallon cans of kerosene I have stored in the barn.
    I haven't ever had issues with any of them either.
    I also keep lots of extra wicks around.

    I'm using liquid paraffin & store it in stainless steel containers. Between the hurricanes & just bad storms we get, flashlight batteries are a pain in the pocket book! I've only got 3 battery powered lanterns, so at night I can get to the bathroom! After almost a month without power after Irma, I've learned to 1} use a gas generator for the fridge & fans {I'm on 5acr so no one hears it} & 2}. batteries cost a fortune simply don't last. Hence the hurricane lamps. We lived that entire month on preps before prepping was a thing for most. Glad I dad who taught me well!

      ☑️☑️ Hey There G Mac, your comment was sweetly nostalgic & made me reminisce about watching the old movie version of War of The Worlds, both as a child & many times as an adult. Since I’ve never had an oil lamp, mostly due to my own ignorance & fear, I’ve always used candles during power outages. However, this rational, well-done video, I can clearly see that l need to have at least a couple of them on hand.

    • @OG-GMac

      @@Sunnytrailrunner Thank you, I'm glad to hear that. The original movie was the best!! One of my favorite Si-Fi movies, up there with "The day the earth stood still" and "Close Encounters of the Third kind". Candles work great also. I just picked up a 100pk of tea lights on clearance at Wally world for 1.94 to add to my preps. It's always good to have options with light. Each have their pros and cons depending on the situation. Like the old saying goes 2 is 1 and 1 is none. 😀I like to occasionally sit in the dark with just candles or an oil lamp burning listening to old radio shows or music. Helps to reset your mind in my opinion. Makes you take a trip back in time before all of the currently technology. Have an awesome weekend, thanks for your comment.

    I am storing lamp oil and wicks. We have our Grandparents glass lamps. They are beautiful. We also have barn lamps and hurricane lamps. We do not have hurricanes but we do get several whiteouts every winter. We have lamps in the barns and they are there during freezing winter temps. Lol you have made me nervous because we have never noticed them freezing and thawing but we have been lucky because we have never had a fire. We keep them out there in case a sudden whiteout or trapped in the barn. We keep some food stored there with blankets as well for the same reason. We will have to rethink the lamps.

      Hello Joyce, yeah it's just a precaution. I hope folks look further into the information When you freeze and then defrost the oil, you risk causing an explosion. As the temperature of the oil quickly rises, an explosion is possible, but not common. But its better to be safe as possible. Hopefully folks who watch this don't freak out lol. I just like to inform folks of possibilities and proper storage techniques. Thanks so much for watching. 😁

      I wouldn't expect kerosene to freeze. Kerosene will not freeze or react to cold temperatures until the thermometer reaches approximately -40 degrees Fahrenheit. I lived in Springport, MI never got that cold lol maybe in the UP? There are a few key differences between the 2, I do like lamp oil here in Florida. Lamp oil has fewer impurities going into the air and it burns longer due to its clean burning nature, now that being said kerosene has pros as well, like its freezing point and it also burns much brighter than lamp oil and it's much cheaper as well.

      Great question, beimg lamp oil slowly evaporates over time. It's very important to store your lamp oil with a properly fitting cap to ensure maximum shelf life. Foil my slow that process down if you don't have a cap for it.

    My lamp oil was in a plastic that became very brittle so I am in the process of transferring it to glass (stored at floor level). only because my kerosene containers are full now. If Kerosene freezes in a glass bottle will it explode ?

    • @GreyManPrepping
      @GreyManPrepping  Před 3 měsíci +1

      If I recall correctly, kerosene freezes around -40 degrees Fahrenheit. So it depends on where you live and the temps in your area. I haven't heard of an explosion on tightly sealed containers, but the main issues with glass is that it passes some UV light, which contributes to the deterioration of fuel and when glass breaks it spreads very quickly and hopefully thiers no ignition sources nearby. If something were to fall on it, or it accidentally gets kicked over, you'll definitely have a flammable mess to pick up. Just some food for thought.

    • @GreyManPrepping

      You can for a while, if you have ever stored lamp oil for long periods, The plastic containers will degrade and get hard/brittle over time. Which can create micro fractures and the oil slowly leaks out and creates a flammable mess.

    Thank you very much for the video! I recently got an old petrol lamp like the one you have in the video (albeit not a Dietz) and was wondering about the safety of the lamp itself. Namely two things: Will the lamp make a room smell of petrol when not in use and stored indoors (I don`t have a garage or anything similar and would just keep it in a cupboard) and also: I plan on using it on my balcony and was afraid that in direct sunlight the flash point of the Kerosene might be reached and thus the lamp would light itself in my absence. maybe I am too frightful as many people use these without having any issues, but any advice would be much appreciated.
    kind regards and best wishes from Germany!

      Greetings 😁👋 So in regards to the smell I have one in my living room and I've never smelled anything coming from the lamp when it hasn't been ignited. Kerosene has a flashpoint of around 100 degrees (F) or so, but that being said it has an auto-ignition temperature of around 428 degrees (F) hopefully that helps a bit or at least points you in the right direction 😁👍

      If you use your lamps on a annual or biannual basis then sure, but keep in mind lamp oil slowly evaporates over time, so it is important to store your lamp oil with a properly fitting cap to ensure maximum shelf life. evaporation reduces the lamp oil shelf life causing it to become thick and rendering it unusable. It will have a discolored / cloudy or thick look to it. Hopefully that helps answer your question Sam

    Research Before Posting!!! No, paraffin lamp oil does not explode as it thaws1. When the oil freezes, it does not break any molecular bonds, and once it thaws, it retains its original properties2. This means that even if your liquid paraffin oil freezes, you can still use it in your lamp without any loss of function or quality2. It’s been rumored that it can explode, but that’s false, it takes a flame to get it to catch on fire1. However, always handle lamp oil with care and follow safety guidelines to prevent accidents.

    I have several oil lamps with the glass chimneys and a couple of oil lanterns. I grew up keeping kerosene to put in all types of lamps. Yes, it smells and causes suet to settle on things. It was stored in a metal can. These were for power outages. However, kerosene has another use. I hope that others can add to this, because I was quite young. I was barefoot and stepped on a broken bottle. In those days you were only taken to the doctor if you were dieing. My dad yelled to Mother to bring towels and a sheet and he grabbed the kerosene can. The towels absorbed the blood and the kerosene that he poured all over my foot. He stripped the sheet into bandages and after the blood slowed he wrapped it up. Every evening, for about a week, I got more kerosene and clean bandages. It didn't get infected but I do have a huge scar. Does anyone else know about the medical uses of kerosene?

    • @GreyManPrepping

      I would definitely have to do more research on that. I've heard of folks using it in that manner a long time ago folks even used it for head lice, but I think it's not recommended in today's society. Some folks use kerosene/gas to clean their oily hands but even that's not recommended anymore. Because long-term skin exposure may result in tumourigenesis. Removal of lipids from the skin. Hopefully that helps a bit lol

    Ummm...have you ever actually burned an oil lamp/lantern? The wick and flame when properly adjusted will sit inside/under the burner cone (the split, domed part over the wick tube). Burn with the wick peeking above the wick cone and you are going to have a sooty mess. That's why people end up with black sooty glass chimney's/globes and go through wicking like there's no tomorrow. Burned properly, a lantern should NEVER soot up the globe, and wicks ought to last for years - even burned every night.

    • @GreyManPrepping
      @GreyManPrepping  Před měsícem +1

      I lived in Florida all my life, and we've been using lanterns "hurricane lanterns" as we call them around here. So yes, I've burned an oil lamp many times. We've also used to use them for camping decades ago. The size of the wick, the length of the wick, and the type of wick material can all affect how long the wick lasts. I could go through the whole "inappropriate flame point" as well as "exceededing the burners limits" as this relates to causing the flame to burn the wick as a fuel instead. Hence , as you stated, when properly adjusted, things can run more efficiently and smoothly. I still think you should stock up on wicks and fuel and any other materials associated with the oil lamp you choose, cause 1 is none and 2 is 1, which is my mindset.
