- The NBA season is heading into the stretch run and the MVP race is still hotly contested. In most seasons the race at this point is down to two or three players, but, at the moment, four different players all feel like legitimate contenders to take home the hardware. Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Doncic, and Giannis Antetokounmpo are all having some of their best seasons and are poised to battle for Most Valuable Player until the final few games with Jayson Tatum looming as a dark horse contender on the league best Boston Celtics. We need to be highlighting how injured the Mavs were through December and January. We finally got healthy and are winning with the new additions, and we went .500 in a stretch where the bottom really could have fell out.

There was a stat going around that Luka is contributing 58 points via scoring and assists which is the most ever in the NBA. I really think it’s his to lose - 73 points, 50/15 on Christmas and carrying a severely injured team to the playoffs

But most VALUABLE player award is for the most impactfull and most important player for their own team. Remove Joker from Denver and they are barely play in team. There is no more important player for their own team than Jokić for the Nuggets, and that is the deffinition of most VALUABLE player. People can't realise that MVP is not the best scorer, the flashiest player etc ... Luka is great, and I'd be happy for him, same Joker, since I am Serb and Jokić is Serb, while Luka is half Serbian. Cone, Luka carried an injury riddled roster for half the season. The only reason they're still in position to potentially crack the top 4 is because of Luka's superhuman efforts to float an objectively subpar roster through that stretch. 6 seed or higher should be more than enough to win MVP with how this year has gone for the Mavs.

Mavs for example missed Kai for 22 games alone. That's more missed games than the entire OKC starting lineup combined this season. The main reason why OKC is performing well is because they had the least amount of injuries. Also Mavericks are 3-5 in games Luka didn't play. Putting that much focus on seeding record without even aknowledging this hard facts is just dumb. Clearly Mavs are on the same level as OKC and that's lowballing it

All 4 candidates are in with a great chance. Really looking forward to how this regular season ends up. I have a feeling that it’ll be decided by whoever has the best record and the best individual performance following the all-star break. For that reason, I think it’ll be Luka, although my vote currently lies with Giannis.
MVP has gone from "Most Valuable Player" to "Best Player on the Best Team". Luka clearly has been the most valuable to his team.

Look at the league history of MVPs, Almost none of them have been lower than 5th seed, MVP Russ had one of if not the greatest regular season of all time and people were mad he won it cause his team finished 6th, Rn Luka's team is 6th i believe, But with how close the standings are there's a chance Luka doesn't even lock a spot in the playoffs, And will have to battle it out in the play-ins. Say that does happen and the Mavs get bounced out, Sorry but it would look ridiculous for an MVP to not even make the playoffs. Now with what Luka is doing and how well the Mavs are playing as of late, If they keep it up and Dallas makes it to like the 4th-5th spot, I think there's absolutely deserving of an MVP. One thing that makes it harder for the best player on the best team to win it is the rise of all around advanced stats like VORP or BPM.
Those single number stats clearly show that Tatum is not in the same league as the four, who rank 1-4 in both while Tatum is 14th in BPM and 12th in VORP.

The Nuggets have paid their dues this season with what has been a hard schedule. Now from the break to the end of the season the Nuggets have the easiest schedule, so watch out.

It's great the foreign players are showing that having a great foundation in the fundamentals as well as developing team awareness can also translate into winning basketball in the NBA. You can tell these guys are more focused on winning than the lifestyle and money distractions.
Luka HAS to be above SGA and is arguably ahead of Jokic. Luka is leading the league in scoring. 3rd in assists (SGA isn't even top 10). 1st in Post Defense. 5th in Spot up defense and 10th in Iso defense. He's had to deal with one of the most injured rosters in the league and has led the Mavs up to the 6th seed (Jokic won it as a 6th seed). There really aren't any arguments against his case anymore.

I think team success is significantly overrated in MVP voting. Team success should definitely play a role because a truly valuable player would make a team more successful. But the difference between them being on the court and off the court should imo be the most important thing to consider.
SGA's start and stop hesi's are a thing of pure beauty. So much young talent in the league right now...still years away from their prime. The next decade is going to be crazy.

If okc is a top 3 seed and mavs aren’t top 4 maybe 5th seed… if all stats and what not continue for the rest of the year. I say it’s nearly impossible to avoid giving it to sga if thunder are 1 or 2 maybeee 3 seed if the mavs are 5th or worse with Lukas crazy stats. If mavs can climb to top 4 or 5 with thunder being 2,3,4 or worse, luka gets it.

In my opinion, when looking over MVP candidates. There is an important stat to look at… team rating when on the court vs off. As well as +/-, and the box score stats can come after. All I want tho being a Jokic is fan is for either Luka or SAG. Not Giannis or Tatum.

Why does Jokic get it at 6th seed cuz of injuries but Luka doesn’t? The mavs have been incredibly injured this season. Before this streak kyrie had only played for 1/3 of the season. How do people talk about injuries and they don't talk about the injuries the Mavs have dealt with? Just look at players that have started for the Mavs, I think it's above 60 games missed combined. Mavs are in the bottom 5 in the league with the most consistent 5-men line up because of injuries, the three most important players on the Mavs are Luka, Kyrie (missed 22 games) and Lively (missed 18 games) and they have played very few games together. The media hasn't talked enough about how many injuries the Mavs have dealt with this season - besides bad mouthing Luka for no reason. On the other hand, some serious people have actually noticed that like the guys from The Dunker Spot, Tim Legler and Adam Mares, etc.

So.. it's two basketball geniuses vs two super athletes. Almost like mind vs matter. I think what will decide the final result is not rational but rather extremely emotional. Stats-wise it's clearly Luka. Popularity - it's between Giannis and SGA. All-time unique greatness - it's probably Jokić. The most important thing to remember here is that it's a vote. A current opinion of the few. What history will remember is another thing entirely.

I think SGA have a shot at it. Carrying thunder without any veteran help is crazy. Thunder with no veteran help and yet they are sitting 2nd is absurd. Luka to be fair is also have a shot due to the injuries of his teammates but he had veteran on his team and mavs made a trade which make them better but he is the definition of MVP. Without him Mavs is a lottery team and same with thunder

maybe in terms of deserving it off of production and seeding Giannis is in the top 3 but in terms of the narrative behind it i just dont see him getting it. Their season has been too messy and up and down. The only way I could see it if somehow the Bucks magically fix all their chemistry issues out of nowhere and go on an insane run which just seems unlikely to me.
Jokic suffers from voting fatigue due to winning it twice in a row and then the championship the next year, plus the Nuggets are kind of “coasting” or at least arent going all out.

One big argument you can make for Shai is he's dominating the advanced stats.
Out of SGA, Jokic, Luka and Giannis, SGA beats them in Win Shares, +/-, Defensive rating, Offensive Rating and Net Rating while Jokic is second in those.
Luka has the best offensive stats and much higher numbers than the rest but also has a much higher usage rate than the rest, he improved as a defender but Shai is better defensively in every aspect, Luka is a great on-ball player and facilitator but Shai is a better isolation player and is far better off the ball.
I respectfully disagree that Shai is better than Luka in isolation. Other than that, valid points.
@@thebekgo1624 I don't think Luka is as good of an off-ball player or defender. Lukas catch and shoot isn't as efficient, he doesn't run to open spaces for the pass as much and when he receives the ball off a pass, he doesn't move immediately and stands there before making a move which makes things much harder. SGA is leading the league in steals, his defensive playmaking with his deflection and interceptions is far better, his off-ball defence is far better where he can run through screens and stay on his man far better and the only area I think Luka can compete defensively is isolation defending and specifically in the post.
Jokic is leading all in OBPM, DBPM, PER, and only .3 under Shai in win shares

We have had over 20+ lineup changes and one of the most injuries in the league is that not taken into consideration
If Kyrie was healthy mavs wud have way more wins than they do now that is for sure and that shud count how he kept mavs alive through such a rough stretched
