The rear of this mini is just a massive step down from the last one..
I think I just figured out Mini's big problem. They've been doing the retro design (like G wagon, Bronco, Wrangler, Defender) for so long that changing anything drastically at this point was always going to be risky.
don't see an issue with the back honestly, looks are subjective at best.
@@EchoAccord It shouldn't be so strange. The only thing is Mini's have always had rounded features, so introducing such sharp angles is incredibly jarring. I think this would probably be okay on any other car.
@@EchoAccordIt's atrocious, with despicable, and a little bit of asinine sprinkled on top.
I'm with you. The previous gen Mini looks better so far.
And the gen before that looks better
I so agree. I had the previous cooper e. The only problem with it was the small battery. - it was fantastic design. - (and the backlights were just fantastic) but the new one looks “wrong” they took the best features and forgot to put something good in instead. - - we switched to the new fiat. Only because of the battery (it was annoying in the cooper that you were so insecure on the range …. )
Prefer the current version.
Agreed @@willmac5642
Absolutely
The new mini looks kinda like some robot version of the previous one.
As a former MINI owner (R50 generation MCS) it´s a shame to me that they stepped away from the black wheel arches. Many people like painted trim pieces but IMHO having black parts for accents and contours makes the car appear much lighter.
Furthermore, I´m pretty sure I´ve read multiple times that the China-manufactured 3-door will definitely be electric only but that ICE versions based on a different platform will still be available for some time.
100% agree with you. I don’t understand certain decisions and this one is a step back 😢
It's all about money friend. Less parts to produce, less cost in the design, but keep selling it for the same price, or even higher. Oldest trick in the book.
I just can't look at the new version without thinking it's come from Grand Theft Auto, like they didn't want to pay the licensing rights...
... I had a 2005 model cooper ( with the restyled bumpers ) & I still think it's the best looking version to date; all the key styling cues that define a modern day mini, but with a lower bonnet ( hood ) / compact proportions👌
Exactly what I thought, it looks like a cheap Chinese knockoff.
I'm a current Mini driver and I'm totally disappointed in the new design. I completely agree on your assessment of the chrome trim, sharp lines, front light graphics and the superiority of the Union Jack taillights. Mini is loosing the fun and friendly character that has made it unique. I detest the triangular taillights. They are just too awful for words. Me sad.
I still remember very well while driving I noticed for the first time that the Mini in front of me had those cool Union Jack tail lights. If that one had also the flag on the roof, that would have been double awesome. The new one just looks off and kind of very similar to the new boring Smart EV.
Note to the Interieur. If the head up display works as well as Mercedes, than I would be fine with it.
Volkswagen should revive the Beetle (A5 generation, the last one) ...as an EV.
Ew
@@lthudgins Evw! 🤣 "Yuk"!"
fr though, although I think it would be better if they went for a retro-futuristic redesign like they did with the ID Buzz
I love that bro it would be a hit and they should focus on a lower price with recycled material
@@taquito1561 See "Ora Punk Cat".
The only thing that I miss are the fender flairs. I liked how they looked.
Don’t let the industry fool you… The over simplification of car design that’s happening right now, especially with EVs, is about cost cutting. The less trim to manufacture, the less buttons to design, etc., this all saves money. The manufacturers need to make one screen that works across all their models, throw all their controls in it, and then boom! Done! This is especially important with EVs because the margins are even less for the manufacturers, so to widen them back up, this is what they’re doing. They’re spinning it as “futuristic,” but really it’s just soulless, mass production product design. Cars replaced horses. Horses had souls, so we gave cars characteristics (you probably have named a car you’ve owned before). But not these things… They’re just big Roombas that we will sit on with a smartphone inside, as we all distract ourselves with technology and hope that the “safety features” make up for our distraction. Car accidents are going up even though the number of vehicles with this tech is going up… coincidence? Nope… This is all great news for the industry.
Same as in architecture. These new square/rectangle buildings out there are all money saving designs. No empty space under raised ceilings, no unnecessary molding designs and no more thought involved in designing. Just draw a square or a rectangle and call it modern and minimalistic.
You get it sir. I have never seen more barebones interiors in an automobile before in my 40 years. Even on some luxury brands. It's all disheartening.
i agree with you.
I love how companies as well as journalists just casually 'discuss' models so far into the future.
"Hello , today we are gonna talk about the star flyer 3045" 😂
So far into the future? This will drop in 2024 as a 2025 model. It's 12-18 months out at most.
The biggest issue in the front end is not the lights or the creases. It's the lack of the clam-shell hood. That was a staple of the mini design language. Now, it sort of looks like a Chinese clone. I do love the rear end, though.
The headlights look great! The static lines make it look like natural eyes
old is better than the new
In this case maybe. In general not so sure.
@@freddybell8328 if the 2.0 will have close to 200hp or more in it's sporty version with hopefully a 6-Speed manual, it will be better, if not, I'm not interested at all lol.
The current Clubman is the best looking MINI inside and out.
I'm concerned about the lack of physical climate controls in the new mini. It has been such a massive misstep in the car industry.
It took the synthesizer industry over 10 years to figure that out once they went that route. 😅
@@fortheloveofnoise it's one thing for different industries to figure this out, but different competing car companies not being on one page on this is insane. Honda/acura and Audi have already done this cycle of learning and hyundai had expressed that they have too. Bmw and mini? They just got started.
@@macaron3141592653it's all about cost savings friend. Much cheaper to produce *software* that runs your climate control and can be shared amongst all your vehicles, sans minute graphics. Versus an actual physical, piece of hardware that is physically connected and wired in, that will only work in that specific model or range.
They are saving gazillions "simulating" everything on an infotainment screen. Versus actually having components to control these functions.
I share same thoughts as you on the redesign.. Mini is a fun sweet car... Don't know how reliable.. But it's a lovely car, one I really would love to own and drive around as a little fun car.
You are damn correct in your verdict. The 'clamshell' of the bonnet is perfect. However, cost more. This new MINI looks cheap.
While I loved the design of my F56 when I bought it 8 yrs ago it feels dated now. I like that Mini is trying to update it. Maybe they took it a little too far but I appreciate the MINImalism 😉 Either way, as long as it still drives like a Mini I'm getting one
MINIs haven't driven like MINIs for a better part of a decade now.
No more manual transmission, 3 cylinder base engines. 😒
The 2013 JCW aero kit model is the best looking mini in my opinion
I'm not mad at the new design. In fact I welcome it, because it will lower the price of the previous gens!
Or raise it. Depending on how poorly received the new gen is. Will raise demand for the previous gen = price increases
@@LynxStarAuto shhh 🤫 we don't talk like that
One more reason to buy a current Cooper while they are available
@Bembli, one other big change in the front. The old one is a clamshell hood that actually has cut outs for the headlights, but this one has a clear hood.
Kinda glad they got rid of the plastic cladding. Lots of MINIs have UV faded plastic. Cerakote does work on my R60 but after 2 years it starts to crack and needs reapplication.
Another major change is the hood, that is no longer a total clam shell, but cuts of at the top of the head lights and in between. In general, the outside looks OK. Interior.. no. In the old one, the screen+gauges+overhead display is a bit much.
I’d much rather the HUD over instrument cluster, I’ve always found it annoying we had the same info in both, I’d much rather the HUD. Especially when I can see minis hud with polarized glasses.
I was not convinced with the new design when I saw it out on internet. And then I went to see the JCW model in person, dark grey with red rooftop, and I changed my mind : it is superb, truly.
Top one. I have a 2006 S Convertible and will just keep it forever
Insane Mini !! ❤❤
@@Brian_Eugene_Lee LMFAO 🤣
Frank Stephenson got the Gen1 (R50/53) so bang-on everything since has been downhill, except maybe the R56 GP2 with all its Williams Engineering aero work e.g. real working rear diffuser.
If the HUD has great clarity then i think it’s an improvement
Glad I bought my 2023 JCW Mini Convertible. It's the best of the bunch.
Would love to see a video about the 2024 HiPhi Z!
Happy to see the Mini getting back its proportions and stance, at least somewhat. Nothing will replace the 1st gen R53 though. BMW needs to keep their marketing vultures far away from Mini and let design lead - again!
I still have my 1st gen minis and they are quite reliable
@@roymilla6636that Brazilian engine is bulletproof. Just if you have an S, make sure you service the charger thoroughly.
i hate the tail lights of the new model, and hate that they removed the small tach screen in the interior. I do like the center screen-circle but thats all they should have done was change that out.
I like the new one and the electric, clean and nice. Not so messy. I get what you’re saying about the lines but the picture doesn’t have good quality so wait for the official ones.
And you STILL didnt take a look at the BMW Concept Coupe Touring...
I was thinking the same man...
Removing the plastic around the wheel wells is a bad idea. Not only does it look good, if protects against those rust hot spots
As a 2017 F56-S owner, I hate the new design. The side profile looks so odd like something from the late 90's early 2000's with the front hood slopping down. Reminds me kind of like the Dodge Neons. I can see they extended the windshield. I guess because the previous model it was hard to see traffic lights at times as the roof block the line of sight. But it kind of kills the proportions.
2017 was the last year they did analogue gauge clusters and its a shame they went all digital in the after years. Something about the digital one doesn't match the interior at all. F56 just feels timeless for some reason.
Have they hired a Zootopia designer to make the mini look like one of the bad goats with barred eyes?
Love it. Progress. Cleaner exterior design. Interior design... more emotional, going simple is true to original, love the seats and steering wheel and the limited, useful buttons. Not a fan of button-less, not a HUD fan and am fine without a gauge behind the steering wheel. Lowering the eyes in my opinion is more distracting than seeing a big number in the peripheral. Can also do without all the moods - I just set to basic and drive. But I do like the round OLED. What I like about BMW MINI UI is the voice assistant can change settings. If Spotlight can keep the fit-finish, it's a winner. No EV is close to this in concept, small 2-door $30k(ish) driver's car.
If the 2023 exterior had the 2024 interior I’d be sold
Mini design has gone the wrong direction. Great video.
2017 JCW Hardtop owner.
I want one so bad, I love them...❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉
I think that center console is the cleanest and best looking one. its different than a square and has little bezel
Center console? Or center display? You don't see the center console in these renditions.
Wait a minute...I saw it all uncovered on the roads. It looks so sick. I was gonna take a pic of it but it was too late.
I thought the old model looked ok as the base model but the Cooper Works looks like Bane.
So the mini has scrapped its previous heritage styling cues of the clamshell hood with "hood mounted" headlights and gone with normal car hood, fender mounted lights, and unseamed from the side 1 piece fenders. Simplifying indeed.
New Mini looks more like Japanese than British car, especially from behind. Could be next Nissan Micra, not Mini )
This video failed to mention the projectors that enhance each mode and the internal sound scapes, longer battery range, 3D emersión of maps.
The cost cutting is showing, inside and out. It does not look premium anymore.
Get with the times, the new dash design is in. Let’s see it’s functionality before you bury it.
Do you realise that the Chrome Body Strip in the current MINI is standard, an Option is in Black & that is a £450 option in the UK. I have that on my MINI Cooper S Electric because the car was in the Showroom and the Dealership Group i got my car from order their Demonstrators and Stock in Level 2 or Level 3 almost all with the black body band. Piano Black exterior etc.
The only MINI thing that they kept is the name.
I´d still pick the 2006 JCW anyday, the graphics, the proportions, everything was spot on.
It has aged very well
The newer generations just look like an oversized bodybuilder version of the original
The new Mini design is just plain sad... It looks like the car had it's soul sucked... Like, why are designers doing this??
It has the same design language as the Issi sport from gta! 😂
🙏Please analyze the new bmw coupe touring concept🙏
with the mini, it is the same with the 911. people expect a certain design. Designers are well advised to stick as closely as possible to the classic design. This new design is to far away from that. The feeling with the Mini is always a little bit retro. The new one does not have this feeling for me.
Either way lets hope the new Mini is more reliable/
I definitely like the old one better
It looks like a Suzuki Swift
Look how they murdered my boy 😢
I like the new one. Cleaner design, forward-looking. I plan on getting one, since they will be discontinuing the Clubman.
The back looks kinda like a Yaris...
Wtf did they do with the dashboard 😭
I diffently go with the older model!
BMW managed to transfer their design crisis to the new Mini. If it carried a Suzuki badge, people would believe it is the new Swift! I am surprised you do not mention the cut line of the hood that is visible from the side. It adds to the sharp cut lines in the hood you mentioned and is so far of the original mini. I still prefer the second generation of the new mini.
I don't like the interior. I understand the fabric portion of it but I feel like it should be more like suede. Similar to what Lotus has. The beauty of mini for me is that it looked more expensive than it was but now it looks something out of a Ford Maverick.
The new design but using the old design tail lights please
Oh yes, and lose the wide spaced Cooper name across the back. It’s what virtually every other manufacturer does. Mini should be something Ubercool. Either retro sixties or super modern, but not following the trend
I didn’t seem to pay attention to a more important thing, that the hood has become smaller and now opens differently and the hood opening line is visible like on cheap cars, it sucks
It kinda looks like Suzuki swift
Totally agree. A step backwards for Mini. It looks like a Chinese knock off and lost its iconic aesthetic.
It’s like they ran out of good ideas for the update
still love my 2009 cooper s
This new car reminds me to watch dogs:legion
The Mini - nice enough on the outside - a dog's dinner on the inside.
O no ! this will not stand out like a MINI should. Looks just like a SKODA Fabia.
Might as well be some foreign market-only Suzuki
it's like a expensive chinese copy of a mini.
The R56 is the best looking Mini. I had one, but recently totaled. Now I have an F57. It's growing on me more n more. This new one...idk. Kinda yes, kinda no.
Mini designers have it even easier than porsche designers.
A very strange trend can be observed novadays. For a long time, there hasn't been a new version of existing model that I have liked more... New BMW 5 series, 3 series, X5, this new Mini, new opel Astra, Insignia, new Mustang, many Citroën modela etc. There are some exeptions of course but generally car design lacks emotions and beautiful line.....
Suzuki Swift inspired? Old is better in this case for sure.
the new mini makes me sad
Agreed
Hope thats not the final version. Not so happy about it to be honest. As you said the car lost its essence. I Think if they removed the badges and emblems will be hard to say its a MINI.
search for China Liana 320. looks more like that for sure than a MINI
I don't wanna sound like every other guy who can't leave the past behind in this comment section (sorry!), but the current one is just better, it had so much personality and its essence hasn't changed much since the 2000's model, but the new one just looks like a clone of it that had its sould ripped out of it... idk just way too simple.
10:00 - Wild Interior
(Your welcome)
Angular design elements and Mini doesn’t compute
1st gen mini still the best one
BMW designs (exterior in particular) have been (for the most part) an incoherent mess for a while now, and this new Mini continues that unfortunate trend. The whole design reeks of compromise, design by committee and highly noticeable cost cutting. It's confused and lacks focus and dedication to Mini's USP design heritage, which is such a massive part of what makes a Mini a Mini. Agree with your analysis completely and it's a real shame to see this.
All their talent jumped ship for other companies. Kia/Hyundai especially, left them almost naked.
BMW is nowhere near the company they once were in the 90's and 00's when they made the push to dethrone MB.
I don't like how making every interior so clean and plain is not what I like, I want to see a digital dash, gauges and buttons I see and touch. So I rather drive the current model than the new one
10:00 I wouldn’t say it’s stripped away. It’s actually designed to emulate the interior of the original Mini Cooper of the 60’s. Mini released a short on their channel, which really highlights the similarities between them: czcams.com/users/shortsfErHUo2INfI?si=4i3dkf8UhVh1iV7i. Normally I’m with you I’m the oversimplification trend, but because it’s actually a callback to something else, I personally don’t mind it in this case
10:00 lol! That interior looks like a joke! I don't know if that is good or not, I guess the latter.
The EV one is a disgrace to say the least, and the Gas Powered one is pretty decent, mainly because it will be made or at least assembled in the country of it's origin unlike the EV, plus will look a bit more interesting than it's EV bloodline.
0:03 No i havent
the new MINI looks like a computer render to me
The proper term for the changes is: icky
I am on my 3rd mini cooper. I don’t love the new design. The mini is a classic and for me I like those nostalgic look of the 2024 and years before.
the new interior is much better, more true to the first mini and not gimmicky anymore. clean and easy to use. a much needed improvement! well done!
So happy with our 'older' minis. 2025 model looks like a very 'plastic' cheap Chinese car.
