We simply just say things in a more simple way that people understand more. If you are British and an American is talking to you then there is a 50% chance that the American will probably not understand some of the words that a British person says because of their accent unless they have either talked to someone with that accent or does well with accents.

I had too many friends get screamed at, reported, and get treated like an animal for having an accent and not knowing how to speak english despite speaking it already to them just because of a few slips and errors. Now, i don't have data on numbers as to how many ppl know other languages as a born american there but we do need more ppl like u who are more humble and open, and respectful with learning about other cultures and languages because there is more to the world than just America-and being in a "free country". Not an ignorant generalization but a comment based on life-long personal experience. Perhaps it was worded incorrectly to make the comment short but it truly has the same message - speaks more about their experience rather than anything else
