The 'Red Triangle' off the California coast is known for great white shark attacks

- California's "Red Triangle" is infamous for shark attacks. Over 1/3 of great white shark attacks in the United States happen there. Following is a transcript of the video.
There’s a stretch of ocean off California's coastline that's different from the rest. It starts around Bodega Bay; extends south to about 50 miles west of San Francisco; and ends in the Big Sur region. This area is infamous for shark attacks, but not just any shark: an estimated 38% of all great white shark attacks in the US happen here.
As a result, these waters bear the name "Red Triangle." The Red Triangle includes roughly 200 miles of coastline. But it’s not the beachgoers and surfers that attract great whites to these waters. It’s the rich population of other mammals like elephant seals, harbor seals, sea lions, and sea otters. Great whites prefer to prey on these animals instead of humans.
However, that doesn’t stop the occasional encounter. Contrary to popular belief, great whites don’t mistake surfers for other prey due to poor eyesight - they have great vision. It actually comes down to their inquisitive nature. Great whites are notoriously curious and will taste test unfamiliar objects, including humans.
In fact, records indicate that great whites have attacked more humans around the world than any other shark. But before you swear off California beaches for the summer, remember that shark attacks are rare.
Each year, less than 100 attacks occur worldwide, and only about 5 to 15% of those prove fatal. You have a greater chance of dying from one of these animals, instead. Luckily, bug spray is available at the local drugstore.

So sharks and elephants are easy enough to avoid, and bug spray is pretty cheap, but where can I find some human spray? Those numbers seem pretty scary.
its called pepper spray
Jonah Bodnovits it's called a gun
Jonah Bodnovits My name brother! Hello!
Jonah Bodnovits just buy a gun
Jonah Bodnovits Um, I think human spray is called security and guns.
I'm glad ppl are spreading the message that sharks are very curious creatures and bite things that they're interested in
So basically if you see a "human" in the water you have a higher chance of it killing you than a shark 🦈
Liam Quiroga precisely
@@NigelRosado Negative. Iq test failed. You need help.
How the hell does a freshwater snail kill you?
I'm pretty sure I heard before that they shoot a poison dart that can stun/kill you. Might just be another animal tho.
First spongebob, then the world.
They're hosts to worms called trematodes, which they can transmit to humans. Depending on the species, they cause different disease pictures.
They are edible, and carry worms.
Choke on it I suppose
Fourth generation from Monterey, CA. My great grandfather was fisherman in that bay witnessed many great whites. I used to run Del Monte Beach and Seaside great whites all over that entire bay big part of the red triangle.Seal rockeries are everywhere. I am surprised it's not higher than 38% for attacks. Saw five whites breach while hunting seals it's crazy to watch. Saw one flip a kyaker over too near Seaside. Wouldn't dip a toe in that water ever.
I’m a 3rd year student at CSUMB and have gone surfing 100s of times with no shark encounters. I’m not ignorant to the fact that they are out there but they are definitely more interested in the seals and other marine life around the bay.
@@NorCal-native You're very lucky you've not seen one. Generations of my family grew up and went in that bay some still do. My great great and great grandfather saw a lot of them fishing in bay waters. My dad saw them surfed all the time in Marina and Seaside. I've seen them all around the central coast and a few in the Pismo Beach(dirt bike riding on the beach) and Morro Bay areas too. Seals are there favorite source and there are a ton of rockeries. Marine life is definitely what they're after. On four different occasions when I ran Del Monte Beach early in the morning when whites were hunting I was chased up on to dunes. They came out of the surf on to the shore after being chased. My mom and dad were on Del Monte last Sept. with their wiener dogs looked over at the water and an elephant seal came out of the surf(normally in Santa Cruz/Pajaro) normally they don't run up. Did the same thing chased my parents and dogs up a dune. Other people there saw the white in water too that day. We lived very close to Mt. Toro and I started running in the hills saw three mountain lions, lots of deer they hunt right at the base of Mt. Toro. Finally got a treadmill.
@@NorCal-native 2nd year student at CSUMB undergoing advanced diving classes through the school. I’ve been on a dozen dives or so now and go spearfishing almost every weekend. Haven’t even seen any sharks (yet) but I’m from SoCal originally and have seen multiple great whites while fishing off vessels down south
@Freedom1775 I’ve seen none still and I work on or in the water 4-6 times a week haha. Whether from a boat or underwater I’ve seen been lucky enough to not see any
At 00:26 she says great white truck instead of great white shark
Josue Moreno
Truck-kun can always appear out of nowhere and attack you at the least expected moment.
Josue Moreno hahahahahaha xddxx
The probability changes if you live in California and you swim a lot in those areas.
Felix RG yeah rip me
Most of the time you shouldn’t worry. Don’t swim in the morning, that is when great whites start hunting
People fly drones to spot them. There are loads of them along the coastline, in fact often in very shallow water and sometimes no more than 30m from the shore where people are swimming.
The worst thing to do is drink shark fin soup while watching a vid about sharks becoming extinct
Gross
Trianglopedia : The Red Triangle
Name : The Red Triangle
Parents : unknown
Siblings : Bermuda triangle
Known for : Shark attacks
My brother was a Red Triangle Diver there back in the 70 & 80's
I love you're articulate voice, Ms. Narrator!
The comparison in fatal attacks is not fair because not everyone is exposed to ocean water. But everyone is exposed to mosquitos
I know the odds of being killed by a shark are low compared to other animals...
BUT it is the most terrifying of the entire list hands down. Thats enough to keep me out of the water lol
Ahmad Ayoub I'm more scared of the snails, slimy little bastards
If a person goes out swimming or surfing alone and no one knows, and they are eaten by a shark, how would they be added to the statistics?
That kinda get me scared because I'm always up in bodega bay
Great, those are the main beaches I go swimming at...
You forgot to mention the 3rd point of the red triangle, the Farallon Islands.
Until you're one of the statistics. Then rare takes on a whole new meaning. Take adequate safety measures.
Thanks for making this maybe it will wake some ppl up that think they're thick sculled killers that are out for humans
When it's life or death I take no chances.
Does this include Stinson beach?
Yes
And people tell me scuba diving is dangerous yet they swim in freshwater
Awesome I live there and have been to almost all the beaches there😂 Santa Cruz Monterrey bodega bay Stinson beach and baker beach still haven't gotten attacked by sharks
San Onofre down to San Diego is also a great white hot spot .
yeah i feel like the red triagle is outdated..look at morro the otehr day ..
The snail is a deadly lazer.
OH NO NOT THE FRESHWATER SNAILS!!!
How on Earth does one go about being slayed by a snail?
by impersonating a leaf, of course
And I guarantee that if you go to any of those beaches today, you'll see lots of people surfing and playing in the water. And when a shark attacks a surfer, we all get shocked and surprised.
How are freshwater snails dangerous?
they carry schistosomiasis
great my fav beach is in the red triangle
Mine too Del Monte Beach, Monterey
Beware of *Triangles* they're dangerous (Illuminati song plays)
I Cringe when people call Sharks Aggressive
Philz3TT Same, sharks *HATE* the taste of human, once they actually taste you they'll most likely let go, they only attack cause from below we look like food.
Madness1845 not really since it mistakes you for a seal or a fish. It varies really
Alex Viper888 how does make them less aggressive? Even if it's a mistake that can still cost a life. But I still believe they're aggressive towards humans as well. You should jump in the ocean with one and test it out for us
What about agressive to other sharks?
Philz3TT I cringe when people say sharks are not aggressive.
People complain and carry on about a few shark attacks but humans never complain about 100 million sharks that are killed every year just for shark fin soup
I hate edited comments.
Nice one
Edited do you mean?
TIM - MarufTIM lol
Wait, modified *edited*?
Nice apocalyptic music right there
We have a red triangle here in Australia is all round our whole country.
Coffin Bay.🦈☠️
Duuuuuuuuuude I saw a shark, No waaaaaaaay duuuuuuuuuude, Tooooooootally radical!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The shark version of the Bermuda triangle
And I'm being scared for people up there as I live in SoCal
When humans are listed as "one of these animals".
Lmao
"You have a higher chance of dying from one of these animals" and it says human lol I know yes technically, it just made me chuckle a bit
if bug spray is available from the store, then shark shield is available from oceanguard. eh?
This video gave wrong information. Shark attacks are most frequently done by juevnile great white sharks due to poor eye site/vision. The color contrast confuses them into thinking surfers are seals.
Lots of bad info, there are way more shark attacks each year then this.
How many triangles are there in the world?
im glad to know the thing about mistaking us as sea mammals is sort of a myth
The first 5 seconds of this video already has me saying "hell no"!!!!
I am never swimming in a California beach EVER!
How do freshwater snails kill people?
Those numbers are skewed. If all humans went swimming in the ocean at the same time then you can you tell us that shark attacks are rare?
Wtf is a fresh water snail attack
Meanwhile is Australia.
Bodega bay ??!! Omg I got attacked by birds there once ! Oh wait… that was tippi hedren .
I need that human spray..
Heh, so am I still moving to California? I think everyone knows the answer-
You have a better chance of being attacked by an illegal alien from South of the border than a shark if you live in a shithole like California
hello people scrolling through comment section! :D
Doesnt everyone in the world knows this?
Prophet Dankus Memeus
Why would we
I didn't . I dont live in America.
Prophet Dankus Memeus California is not the center of the world, so not everyone knows about this red triangle.
Red Balloon$
Bagged my first human the other day mate. Didn't even have to chase him, came from below and chomp. All these years wasted on seals, what we we thinking!
What about the planes that go missing there?
It's believed the sharks have acquired shoulder fired anti aircraft missiles.
It’s just their taste test is more like halfsies with your leg.😶 or like when you “share” a bite with your sibling.
freshwater snail. oh brother
I had a dream around the red triangle that a shark was is the water and I brought my dog and he was lured in the water and eaten but five minutes later i woke up with my dog writing this
Hmmm this is similar in GTA 5...
I hate mosquitos
I just hate these stats they are giving. You know how many people don't go to beach? Percentage is not a fair representation.
Sharkmunatti
Am scared of snails now .-.
Just use Shark repellent. Wayne Enterprises makes it.
😂 shark week Kurnal
Haha they listed human after they said one of these animals
How many hell would I have a greater chance of getting killed by an elephant?
Nah.. just more ppl frequent those areas more. If you dip you're pinky in the water and it's salty, there are sharks..lol
They can smell blood
Californians are not that cognizant of sharks. Many of them don't even realize great white sharks are there.
I have a zero% chance of being killed by an elephant.
Is that in philippines
H Cometa no its from usa girl, just studied the map
snails kill people?! howww.....
even a snail can destroy you man
Bull sharks attack more people than any shark
Fuck I live here
i was literally going to make the exact same comment I was gonna say "fuck I live here" what the F
Those comparisons are just dumb, of course it you take the entire population of the world it will yield a tiny probability, as most people don't have coastal access, and from the ones who do, only a small fraction goes into the water outside of where waves are breaking.
humans taste like salt
What could be worse than illuminati?
Dude, rename your channel.
Still am not gonna risk it to be a bate.
I like how it says you have a greater chance of dying from an elephant. I don’t live in Africa. so no I have a greater chance of being eaten by a shark.
Human is on the top list
Yea most people just end up losing a leg or an arm.this is so funny! People are getting attacked all the time🤣
dont care what anyone is saying about the small chance to die by sharks this bitch is not getting near that triangle
Statistics don't mean shit when you are one of the casualties. Let's look at 10%.
Your odds:
10% of 100,000 (1,000) people at the football game will get $10,000 as a prize.
10% of 100,000 (1,000) people at the football game will be shot in the head before leaving.
How do you feel about both situations?
@Ramen Lover haha, yeah. Sit there and wait for the next time a name is called to get capped in the head. I bet 10% has a new meaning.
Legalize shark hunting
Bug spray is available, but why i cant get my human spray? Racism?
Human,lol kills alot lololololo.
If only human-spray was available at our local drug store too... stay away
At 1:30 she says that less than 100 people get attacked by sharks but not killed . You know what humans do to sharks humans kill 1.3 sharks every second . I'm the biggest shark fan . When you say sharks are bad I will fight with you sharks are amazing .
Human... hahaha
YEET
maybe im not first but im close enough FIIIIIIIIIRST!!!!!!!!!
Anyway, California beaches are horrible.
Smells like animalism...
