The 'Red Triangle' off the California coast is known for great white shark attacks

  • California's "Red Triangle" is infamous for shark attacks. Over 1/3 of great white shark attacks in the United States happen there. Following is a transcript of the video.
There’s a stretch of ocean off California's coastline that's different from the rest. It starts around Bodega Bay; extends south to about 50 miles west of San Francisco; and ends in the Big Sur region. This area is infamous for shark attacks, but not just any shark: an estimated 38% of all great white shark attacks in the US happen here.
As a result, these waters bear the name "Red Triangle." The Red Triangle includes roughly 200 miles of coastline. But it’s not the beachgoers and surfers that attract great whites to these waters. It’s the rich population of other mammals like elephant seals, harbor seals, sea lions, and sea otters. Great whites prefer to prey on these animals instead of humans.
However, that doesn’t stop the occasional encounter. Contrary to popular belief, great whites don’t mistake surfers for other prey due to poor eyesight - they have great vision. It actually comes down to their inquisitive nature. Great whites are notoriously curious and will taste test unfamiliar objects, including humans.
In fact, records indicate that great whites have attacked more humans around the world than any other shark. But before you swear off California beaches for the summer, remember that shark attacks are rare.
Each year, less than 100 attacks occur worldwide, and only about 5 to 15% of those prove fatal. You have a greater chance of dying from one of these animals, instead. Luckily, bug spray is available at the local drugstore.

Fourth generation from Monterey, CA. My great grandfather was fisherman in that bay witnessed many great whites. I used to run Del Monte Beach and Seaside great whites all over that entire bay big part of the red triangle.Seal rockeries are everywhere. I am surprised it's not higher than 38% for attacks. Saw five whites breach while hunting seals it's crazy to watch. Saw one flip a kyaker over too near Seaside. Wouldn't dip a toe in that water ever.

I’m a 3rd year student at CSUMB and have gone surfing 100s of times with no shark encounters. I’m not ignorant to the fact that they are out there but they are definitely more interested in the seals and other marine life around the bay.

@@NorCal-native You're very lucky you've not seen one. Generations of my family grew up and went in that bay some still do. My great great and great grandfather saw a lot of them fishing in bay waters. My dad saw them surfed all the time in Marina and Seaside. I've seen them all around the central coast and a few in the Pismo Beach(dirt bike riding on the beach) and Morro Bay areas too. Seals are there favorite source and there are a ton of rockeries. Marine life is definitely what they're after. On four different occasions when I ran Del Monte Beach early in the morning when whites were hunting I was chased up on to dunes. They came out of the surf on to the shore after being chased. My mom and dad were on Del Monte last Sept. with their wiener dogs looked over at the water and an elephant seal came out of the surf(normally in Santa Cruz/Pajaro) normally they don't run up. Did the same thing chased my parents and dogs up a dune. Other people there saw the white in water too that day. We lived very close to Mt. Toro and I started running in the hills saw three mountain lions, lots of deer they hunt right at the base of Mt. Toro. Finally got a treadmill.
