Star Trek: First Contact - The Best Next Generation Movie?

- Star Trek: First Contact is considered by many to be the definitive Next Generation movie. One of the most action-packed Star Trek movies, it pits Captain Picard against one of the franchise's most iconic enemies - the Borg and their queen, played by Alice Krige. Directed by Jonathan Frakes, the film proved to be a box office smash in 1996, becoming the highest grossing Star Trek film internationally, and setting up the Next Generation crew for a long-running franchise that, sadly, never really came to pass. In this episode of Revisited, we take a look at how this iconic Star Trek: The Next Generation movie was an answer to the critics that thought the last movie, Star Trek Generations, was too similar to a two-part episode.

#StarTrek #startrekthenextgeneration - Zábava
I saw this in the theater opening night, and it was such an event. The theater was completely sold out and there was so many people decked out in all sorts of Star Trek gear and there were a number of Star Wars, lightsaber wielding people. When Data said the memorable "To hell with orders", the place erupted with cheers and yelling and such. It was a truly wonderful experience that I will never forget.
I came here to post a very similar experience. When the opening credits started with the rousing score, the crowd cheered, I got chills, and the energy in the room was amazing!
Man I miss those cinema experiences
One of my earliest trek memories is coming out of this movie and trying to do the vulcan salute on the way back to the car (i was like 6 or 7)
I saw it opening night too. The theatre was so excited when the lights went down at the beginning of the movie. Audience erupted into cheers after Stewarts’s masterful line delivery for the “I will make them pay” monologue.
Audience also cheered when the Defiant appeared near the beginning too!
‘We must draw the line HERE . No further !’ Terrific stuff
This is my favorite Next Generation movie. The Borg and Queen looked great, the Zephram Cochrane sideplot was hilarious, and the Picard was a bad ass.
The only "downside" was the scene where Picard and Worf get into a fight and yell at each other. They were sooooooo out of character in that scene it was laughable.
@@interdimensionalsteve8172 Yeah, I mean, it ain't like Picard rescued himself in Best Of Both Worlds, is it? Sure, it was his force of will and...
Nah.
I blame the writers for being American and not understanding the concept of Zeitgeist (or Hive Mind) fully.
...and for being too timid to explore THAT more fully as an existential threat to everything they know.
Mostly, it's a cracking movie - though I prefer Generations, as Tolien Soren is one 'big bad' I can TOTALLY identify with (anyone with an NDE can).
Agreed. It's my favorite Next Generation movie, too. It's easily the best Star Trek: The Next Generation movie and it's one of the best Star Trek movies, period.
there's no single bad episode ever directed by jonathan frakes even in picard his direction is awesome. I loved how he stepped up as captain of enterprise when picard was taken by the borg and gave the order to fire on the borg vessel without hesitation, he embodies every good quality of starfleet
I think Frakes would be great to run Start Trek as a whole.
As said by someone in the special features of DVD, First Contact is the crown jewel of the Next Generation movies. I'm inclined to agree.
AGREED.
Making the Borg even more scary was great....thought granted I was younger then but still one of my fav movies
Second best only to Wrath of Khan, of course. I absolutely LOVE how Picard is taken to his breaking point in this movie, solidifying him as my favorite captain, never to be surpassed (and I grew up on Kirk and made the DS9 game!).
I never even watched TNG, but I loved this movie, saw it in theaters. One of the RARE movies with time travel that avoid paradoxes--genius. '96 was the greatest year for action/adventure movies.
this movie works as Star Trek movie, as Scifi movie, and as action movie. With or without existing trek knowledge, you get something out of this movie. Despite all the danger and fighting, a sense of wonder and novelty. A sense of progress.
The movie is well paced. If you know the characters already or not, you want to know what happens next.
4:40 - There's a good reason for this. Throughout TNG, Picard barely lifts a finger to do anything except command his ship. We hear time and time again what a rowdy young man he was but he mellowed out. BUT, after coming into contact with the one and only JAMES T. KIRK, he has become ACTION PICARD! Kicking ass and taking names! Thus proving that anyone will become action if they just spend five minutes with Kirk :p
Great film from start to finish.. definitely TNGs best movie.
👍👍💯💯💯
Best ST movie, better than overrated TWOK.
It's the only good tng movie
@@Isaacisaperson4677 I actually didn't mind inserection or Nemesis. Not great but OK. But I thought Generations was a terrible tilm.
@@grantwatson27yearsago14 I despise generations and nemesis. Insurrection is fine but not very good

sure. - email chrisbumbray@joblo.com
Underrated movie, it's in the same league as The Wrath Of Kahn, The Voyage Home, and The Undiscovered Country and that's really saying something. The theme is also easily the best of the lot, it's properly cinematic and moving. Alice Krige as the Borg Queen is weirdly sexy and scary. Any Star Trek with a cover of Magic Carpet Ride by Steppenwolf is a win!
I remember going to this on Opening Night, and being blown away by the whole thing. From start to finish it was amazing.
Jerry Goldsmith's score is what makes this feel like a real movie. As great as Jonathan Frakes and the art direction it still looks like TV episode. Goldsmith carries the brunt of this film.
I totally agree! And that's proven by the fact they brought back the First Contact theme for Picard season 3
Eh, I find it overrated, using the First Contact theme over the main titles kinda steals the emotional impact it has at the end and it overshadows the Borg material which is way too orchestral for the race, Jerry should have gone in a more electronic direction like Ron Jones did for The Best of Both Worlds Parts 1 & 2, because that sounds more like Borg music than what he composed for First Contact, although the Borg music by his son Joel does lean more in that direction somewhat and finally Jerry's music for the horror scenes is just not scary, I wish he had gone for his old Alien sound, a lot of bad decisions all around with the score.
It was indeed a very cool movie which I watched many times. Picard’s line “the line must be drawn here, this far and no further…” is burnt into my memory. It does however end with the enterprise basically able to timetable at will which I found a big plot hole.
Insurrection and Nemesis were both very weird movies. A race that wants to look better?!?! Who wrote this shit??
Seeing it in the theaters when it came out was just awesome. So many cheers, etc from the audience and when the beautiful Enterprise E made her debut... everyone was in awe
Still love it to this day
The Battle of Wolf Three-Fifty-Nine? Whoever wrote the script goofed.
That and how he pronounced Data
Data’s maliciously ironic phrase “Resistance is futile!” is one of my favorite lines in TNG. He says it with such intensity, callousness, and hatred towards the Borg Queen.
My issue with First Contact was Picard giving the order to kill the borged-up Enterprise crew members, "There is nothing we can do for them now." Well what if that same crew had that same attitude towards you, Lacutus?
Haha - yeah I always had that issue too. It's good to be the captain I guess.
We never watched the process he went through to get all those implants removed, and organic tissues restored. The episode ended, and then we had a time skip to where he's convalescing in France. Judging by other Trek shows, it's a long process, and they did not have the luxury of time or stable medical facilities.
Displaced in time, and under siege by the Borg, there was probably no safe way to contain assimilated crew without risking the ship.
It feels cold in the moment, but given the circumstances, it makes sense.
@@BCWasbrough fair enough but it still bugged me.
First Contact is better than Wrath of Kahn imo, the Enterprise E model looked absolutely glorious and the lighting made it look so much more realistic than any CGI version that came in Insurrection and Nemesis
Wasn't the Enterprise E Gorgeous?? I loved it.
KKHHAAAANNNN
You’re funny. And wrong.
No
@@Derpy1969 just my opinion.
Didn't know Deputy Director Bullock was in star Trek lol
I like to hold off on watching great movies like this for a while so that it remains fresh. But I need to watch this again.
Tragic Trivia: First Contact premiered on November 22nd, 1996, the day that actor Mark Lenard (Sarek) passed away. It was a bittersweet day for me. 🖖😔
F.C. Best STAR TREK Movie ever!!
I saw this in the theaters with my dad...it was the last week of it showing..and we were at the mall before it closed at 10..except the movies and a couple restaurants..we were the ONLY 2 in the theater... sat dead middle ...was so perfect..both huge trekkies.. i was 13... it was the last movie i got to watch with him...he died a week later in an accident....i watch this a couple times a year..on fathers day and on his bday which was a couple weeks before mine in September... almost always brings a tear to my eye and makes me laugh remembering how much my dad made amazing jokes and could do such good impersonations of picard and worf .... miss you dad... hope your energy is somewhere among the stars ...we believe in science not religion...but energy cannot be distroyed, only transformed
One of the most underrated sci-fi action movies of all time, it’s so much fun and a creative premise
5:19
"It's pronounced Day-tah"
"Yeah, that's what I said. What's the difference?"
"One is my name...the other is not."
Haha! Good call!
First contact doesnt have much competition being the best tng movie.
There is a discussion to be had about which of the others is #2, though. Generations probably wins in a poll, but Insurrection is my pick.
Just starting this video. Yes, it was the best TNG movie and one of the best sci-fi movies in my opinion. The action was great, the Borg were creepy, Picard was a badass and the Enterprise E set looked great. I'm going to watch this movie later.
As a Star Wars fan, I do admit this is an entertaining film not just as far as Trek films go, but also sci-fi films in general
Star Trek First Contact is my third favorite of all of the Star Trek movies. Number one of course is Star Trek the undiscovered country. Number two is Star Trek the wrath of Khan, and number three is Star Trek First Contact. Generations is fourth.
After watching this trailer I'm now looking forward to this movie Looks like fun
I remember going to see this at the twoonie theaters here in moncton saw both star trek movies there it was quite the time 90s
James Cameron didn't ruin Alien with the introduction of the Queen - there was always a hint of, "who or what laid the eggs in the first place."
Trek ruined the Borg with the introduction of the Queen.
The whole TRULY frightening thing about The Borg WAS the Hive Mind - NO individuality, no hierarchy.
The Borg became just so-so; a rip off of Doctor Who's chilling Cybermen (with untidy sticky-out bits)... and nowhere as terrifying as the Daleks.
It was the unfathomable loss of SELF that was terrifying - plus, WHY did The Borg created Locutus if they already had a Queen who could interact on more understandably individual (human)level?
So yeah: terrific fun movie - even if Cochrane's taste in music was questionable! - yet notable for completely neutering The Borg, even going so far as to utterly disrespect Hugh's journey in I, Borg and Seven of Nine's in Voyager.
TBH I feel like that’s been an issue since The Best of Both Worlds.
I never understood the need for Locutus and why the Borg would need an ambassador to facilitate the assimilation of Earth.
“Q, Who?” had established the Borg at their purest as a hive mind race that couldn’t be negotiated with, or entered into a dialogue with.
When the Borg sent a scout in that episode they didn’t give a shit about the crew or Picard, and were more interested in the ship itself, so I didn’t really get the idea of Locutus.
(I know that dramatically it raised the stakes by having Picard captured and that iconic shot of him borgified, it’s just the in-universe reason never made any sense to me).
@@jasonorriss Totally... although, in some senses, it made the Wisdom of the Borg Hive Mind superior, knowing that humanity would be better dealt with on an individual level, yet... still not really needed as The Borg are (were) so powerful at that point.
A little bit like the first few versions of Invasion Of The Body Snatchers: to be told that ego and selfish urges are gone, etc... kinda scary to such an individualistic culture as in the US.
Fantastic film.
If I never see or hear about the Borg again it will be too soon. The appearances in TNG and this movie are enough for me.
My fave tng film
I watched this much later (I was unaware of it on its release) Like it a lot.

First contact was is and always will be the best. Make it so
Sorry my Google smell checker messed up again
First khantact was is and always will be the best, then came the wraith of Khan with Chekov
funny, i just watched this movie today :D
it IS the best tng movie... totally agree
This is a very long way to say the words “because it’s good”
Great movie, good video (the narration was mundane).
I understood that reference.
Hard to believe Cochran got his start being Stretch Cunningham, Archie's buddy on All In The Family. Lol
"And I... WILL MAKE THEM PAYYY FOR WHAT THEY'VE DONE" no one could've done Jean-Luc Picard better than Sir Patrick Stewart
another great vid by Chris B, i remember being a teen when I watched this in '96 as my first ST movie in the cinema, it's still the best movie in the series, before JJ ruined and bastardised Star Trek for the millennial groupies.
I'm the out one because I like Nemesis, from TGN it is my favorit.
It’s Galaxy quest. And it’s not even close.
I don’t know who you are, but you are correct.
Live long & prosper 🖖
They should have just committed to having Data having a half blinky robot face for the rest of the movies.
Top shelf movie!
Alice Creek as the board Queen was kind of sexy? I imagine for me that will be the understatement of the day.
Cromwell was not just cockran. He was in Star Trek tv episodes before
You mispronounced Data's name! Da*y*ta, not Da*h*ta.
I love that bit when crusher left and in the new doctor's first episode she mispronounced his name. His response was priceless, 'because that is not my name'.
5:15 Hey, it is Data not Data. One is his name, the other is not.
It would have been awesome to see Tom Hanks in a Star Trek movie, he would have made an even better Zefram Cochrane!
ST FC was the first ST movie I saw on the big screen and still my favorite but that could be just because it was the first. 🤷
The missed opportunity here was not to include Sisko. We know Sisko's anger towards the Borg and Picard for the death of Jennifer. We could have had a scene where Sisko initially distrusts Picard, then ultimately work out their differences and fight side by side against the Borg. Then towards the end Sisko and Picard reconcile. It would have been a great moment for both!
I'm so glad this didn't happen. First, just like Generations, we don't need crossovers again and again; having Worf on the Defiant was plenty of reference. Second, that plot would have taken up half the movie. They had a solid, ST:TNG movie with that specific cast and their chemistry, and it was great. If they wanted to do a ST:DS9 movie in the future, I wouldn't have been against seeing it, but I wouldn't want TNG characters stealing those characters' thunder, either. Sometimes less is more.
@@rienjen well, that's my opinion and I believe the movie could have been better with that sub plot.
@@sureshmukhi2316 That's okay. You are absolutely entitled to your opinion.
6 is still my favorite but this is my 2nd favorite followed by wrath of khan , generations the the 4th as my top 5
I thought generations was better. My main issue with first contact is that the borg is a lot more menacing without a queen. Also the writers could have had such a grander scale movie with an enemy like the borg: massive conflicts involving most of the alpha quadrants races uniting to fight them, etc. The time travel aspect was lame and a little boring.
If first contact were made today instead of lilly they would have put guinan in that role so fans could do the leo dicaprio snap-and-point meme
I still think it was a little cheap that they couldn't carve out at least a little bit of their budget to get the original Steppenwolf version of "Magic Carpet Ride" but whatevs.
Surf Wisely.
Best zombie movie ever made.
Now where's Insurrection and Nemesis?
Unpopular opinion but imho nemesis is my fav tng movie.
THE LINE MUST BE DRAWN HERE
NO FURTHER!
The line must be drawn hee-yar. Gotta say it right. Lol. Probably my favorite scene in the movie honestly.
“Jean Luc Blow up the damn ship!”
“No. Nooooo”
This movie is great, but Insurrection is my favorite TNG movie.
I don’t believe this. Explain yourself. Lol.
Insurrection felt like a well-written, high budget two part episode of TNG. Nothing spectacular, just a solid B+ TNG story.
Which of course raises the question, why this story and not something more fitting of a feature film?
@@mattrose4154 The story is a classic, the fountain of youth in space. I like that the characters defy star fleet in their way for the greater good. Data by revealing that the people are being spied on, Picard by embracing being court martialed if it brought the incident to light. I like Geordi seeing the sunset. The score is excellent. First contact is great too.
@@BCWasbrough I always thought most ST 2parters were better than plenty of movies. Lol ,imagine that, a beloved tv series brought to film reminds me of the tv series. The fountain of youth in space is a pretty good premise for a feature in my opinion, and doesn't result in the enterprise blowing up.
@@matthewbain21 Definitely agree that it is a great and solid movie and it definitely is a lot deeper than any of the other next gen movies, but to me it’s the weakest. But the weakest is a great franchise is nothing to be upset about. I’d probably go First Contact, Generations, Nemesis, then Insurrection
This is the best TNG film but that's not saying much...
Great movie. Unfortunately, it's downhill from here.
...actually, the ONLY (even) halfway-decent Next Generation film!
(This and Insurrection and Generations had been made in lieu of an EIGHTH tv season; the better option?)
My favourite Star Trek film of the lot. I can watch it over and over again.
Stewart's outburst is legendary and emotional to the core. It's even more personal now as it's how I feel about the COVID lies and how we're expected to roll with the trans and anti white men nonsense that's currently consuming our society.
Great film
Homie triggered me with the way he said Data 😠. I will die on that hill. The line must be drawn here, no further! And I will make him say... it right lmao
I stopped watching the video after I heard him screw that up.
@@Leftover81I had to fight the urge lmao. I've never said data (the word) that way but I guess if I did and I was reading a script I could make that mistake. What gets me is people that argue the point. It's a proper name in this context so it is pronounced however he wants, within reason lol
👍👍
Why did the Borg only send one cube? They already know that one cube can easily be defeated.
Budgetary constraints, but don’t forget, the Borg Cube is enormous, has a vast arsenal of weapons and it can regenerate damage and adapt to enemy weapons to minimize damage.
@@tedgruver7618 and as we know from Best of Both Worlds can be defeated.
7:46 I’ve always hated how ridiculous data’s “pulled back Android flesh” look ends up looking like a prosthetic on *top* of his skin, and this sequence is the worst take of them all
Is that even Brent Spiner? 😂😂😂 it looks like they used the body stunt double in a final sequence😂
Dah-ta? Wolf 3 Fifty 9? Who wrote this for you?
Borg Queen is kinda sexy...? KINDA SEXY?! I'll forgive you for misspronounciating super sexy. I started collecting all Alice Kriges films after seeing her in this.
It's just a rip off of Aliens. It copies all the main story beats but not as well. Ironically Aliens is an homage to Them! (the giant ants movie) but arguably Cameron made a better picture.
Loved it until he said "make it so" instead of "engage" at the end
"0.68 seconds" 😂
WHY DO YOU MISPRONOUNCE DATA?
"Three fifty nine" it's pronounced three five nine. 😅
By far
The TNG movies were all great
Not just the best TNG film, probably the best Star Trek film in general.
In your opinion, not mine
Did you call Data Data?
I think Generations is the better film. It has more in common with the show than FC does. FC is an action film starring the cast of next gen. It's fun and all, but doesn't seem like the show I love.
Picard is so much better in the series than in the movies. He's no action hero and shouldn't be portrayed as one. This movie is sort of ok, but man did it get worse from here. Captain goes alone to fight the big bad.....
👍👍👍🎥
It's the best star trek film in general
First Contact is the best Star Trek movie, period. But that's just me.
As great as The Wrath of Khan is, Kirk didnt have proper motivation to cry out, "KHAAAN!" It's not really earned even though they built up to it really well. However, Picards outburst toward the Borg in this movie is totally earned and legit at this point. They're a mass murdering nuisance and they're threatening the future of mankind
No no noooooo?
The best Star Trek movie, not just the best TNG movie.
Just a prediction for the far future, forget about federation, humans will be borg, rather then a federation, already happening now. Implants, drones glued to screens in all sizes and forms, robotics getting better and better. Combine all that with humans need to colonize, yea, i dont see a federation happen.
On the show, the only thing thats missing in the entire star trek franschise is an origin borg story, it will be impossible to do without drawing similarities to human history.
Objectively it is excellent and on par with Star Trek 2 and Star Trek 6. However, saying that it is the best TNG movie is setting the bar ridiculously low.
I would go as far as to say it's better than "Wrath of Kahn", but I appreciate I'm the voice of controversy.
Don't let the old folks hear that. They might mutiny 😂
@@L33Reacts I'm quite the old fart, too. 😁
Not only the best TNG film, the best of all Star Trek films! Sorry, Star Trek 2, I really do think First Contact has a slight edge
