On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 11-5-20.
We're looking at a 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 Skyliner Convertible in Flame Red & Raven Black Paint. The car comes with the factory 292 CI V8 “Y Block” engine.
The car's Owner is Don Walters. Don’s had this car since 2000. He shares he had one like this when he met his wife. The car features the “Retractable Top” and Don shares back in the 1950’s known as the “Hideaway Hard Top”. He found this one in a junk yard and did all the restoration work himself in four years. Don uses this car as his daily driver.
    ENJOY!

The engineering and hardware for the Ford Skyliner was originally developed for the Continental Mark II. FoMoCo product planners decided at the end not to build a retractable Continental Mark II because sales estimates were minuscule. FoMoCo lost $1000 (about $9000 today counting for inflation) on every Mark II. This engineering was partially used on the 1961 Thunderbird and 1961 Lincoln Continental in order for them to have a concealed convertible boot. Restoring a Skyliner is a nightmare compared to a soft top Sunliner due to this complexity. It would have been interesting to see pictures of this car during restoration. Also, if power windows are original to this car then that is rare because at that time most Chevy, Ford, Plymouth customers considered power windows unnecessary. The Skyliner continued for both 1958 and 1959 but not for 1960 because the big 1960 Ford was redesigned.

Another Don gem with an impeccable resto. A very iconic '50's car. The striking and daring color combo works great with that body style. This is a car where the skirts make a positive impact. Very nice touch, along with the front grill guard. Thank goodness a continental kit was not added. It adds way to much mass to an already rather "fat" rear-end! LOL. My cousin had one of these also in the early '60's. It had an electronic issue in that when it rained the top would go down and the interior would get soaked. My father helped fix the problem and was amazed at the complexity of the system. How it made it into production is a wonder. Fortunately it did!

My dad worked on those when new. The wiring fried on the first retractable they got in. The Ford rep threw down a box of parts and hit the road. Nobody had a clue how to repair them so Dad was flying blind. But he did get it rewired. We had a couple of 57 rag tops but never a retractable. I always thought the 57 was an exceptionally beautiful car.

NICE! I had a '57 Ford in H.S. but a basic one. Just as well because of the abuse they all suffered in our H.S. days...

I'm a little late view this one but well worth it! Always been super impressed with the retractable Sunliner - and this one's really nice Lou - and watching that NASA-type mechanism unfold without a hitch always impresses :)

Proportions are a bit strange because of the “basket trunk” that has to hold the folded metal top. Apparently those tops were an electromechanical nightmare, but were a testament to engineering expertise of that era. Definitely a unique vehicle, Ford loved exposed Phillips head screws to hold every thing together that’s why you see a multitude on this vehicle! Very cool exhaust note. Perfect car for DQ hangout!

The front clip was just about the only part of a Retractable that would fit any other '57 Ford Body! Where Lou is showing the flip up door lock cover--no other 2-door would have that item in that location.
