am I the only one that thinks eqs should all be vertical instead of horizontal?? it just makes sense. high end at the top. low end at the bottom.

Your describing a spectrogram
All channels on desks are vertical though, only outboard is mostly horizontal

Fun fact: Elastique, the pitch shifting algo that Reaper, Cubase, Studio One and FL Studio (among others) uses is made by zplane. They have some very smart people who are at the forefront in DSP development and progress.
Us pro tools users FINALLY got it as well but it's buggy right now.

Studio one don’t have that plug-in my boy I been on since V3 now on v6 and I have it because I bought it don’t come I’m with any pitch shifting , frequency shifting plug-in what’s so ever .
@@Cramz It's not a plug-in, it's an algorithm built-in to Studio One itself. Whenever you stretch an audio clip to fit the tempo it's using the Elastique algorithm to keep the pitch the same - no matter how much you stretch or compress the audio. You can switch to the "Tape - Resampler" algo, but that's more for getting a lo-fi effect. Unless your sounds are separated in the stereo field how would you isolate them if overlapping with other sounds? Your example is contrived to make the plugin look as if its useful. The affiliate link is not proof of your independence.

I've very rarely see a tool or plugin that I am in constant need of. This is a game changer. The amount of clients who have no access to their original projects but still need something lowered or boosted is astounding.

This plugin seems incredibly useful for situations where you need to isolate something and apply additional processing to the "selection". That won't be possible in many mixes, but this looks like a great tool to have in the toolbox. Really cool..
The concept is available since more than 20 years with Quikquak's MashTactic VST.

I find this awesome to identify bursty issues in an audio file. There's lots of tools that can do the same, and more and more AI tools that will clean it up, but if I look at it through Peel beforehand, it helps me dial more targeted settings that I don't have the skills to 'hear' yet

Interesting tool! The best use I can think of is as a very precise and surgical denoiser, like if you have a stereo field recording, and you want to isolate a specific thing!
I don't see a lot of use for it in production if you've still got the project file. Of course a much easier way to add some reverb to the guitar would be to... add some reverb to the guitar!
I had Zplane deCoda first.
A standalone program that was/is useful for instrument practise, enabling the isolation and susbstituting of parts for learning purposes.
When PEEL came along, I grabbed that too.
It doesn't get a whole lot of use in my rig currently, but it is a useful tool nevertheless.
As you pointed out, you have to watch out for artefacts when there's not a lot going on to 'mask' them.

I've had peel for a long time. The latency deterred me from using it more. It seemed to be best used for post-production. I'll try resampling or routing the signal to a different channel to see if that helps. Thanks for the review!
When I first got this I thought, hey, how about more than one isolation rectangles? Then I engaged brain and saw that using two or more instances on the split signals is the way to go… Great video by the way. Thanks.

Pretty remarkable processor. If you can automate the frequency and with parameters you could perform some fun fx processing with it.
Boy! How I could have done with this on Scarlet & Blue, a restorative mastering project.This would have saved me so much time in post editing. I had to duplicate a track, EQ out everything below and above say the vocal or the guitar solo, add FX and processing, and then had to blend it back in to make it sound natural. This is far more accurate and a whole lot quicker! 😎
It would be cool if you could do multiple boxes, each with it's own external routing, and also a mix control for each to set how much each box effects each section. Very nice plugin!
I guess you could export when you fix let say the guitar then open it again in a new template and now fix the 2nd part or 3rd but it would be much easier if you can do all that in one take. Very cool plug-in!! Great video too great job 👏🏽

you can add multiple instances of the plugin on the track and do this too.
I got this. But unfortunately since the UI is missing screw holes it just dropped and bounced off the task bar and broke. So had to zip the license file and email it back.
Too many artifacts for me but I can see applications in correctional mastering.
I really found the display the most interesting part as I found it easy to determine the frequency density better than a standard RTA/FFT display.
this one is probably the most interesting tool i´ve seen around for years. So many aplications.
Zplane has the deCoda plug with this same feature, it's really good.
I guess having this plug as a separate thing is good too.
This should be made with a built in exciter / suppressor so you can brighten and darken the harmonics/subharmonics above and below. That's a plugin I have always dreamed of. Also a rudimentary version of the magic rx highlighter with this capability would be insane. Edit: I appreciate everyone telling me that I can use my own exciters I did watch the video too, but it was a work flow recommendation. I still love yall though x
use either FathomFive (subharmonics) or Focus (odd harmonics) by airwindows for that specific area excitement.
You could probably do this in Bigwig using the split harmonics plugin.
If you use this to seperate a part of the frequency spectrum/stereo field, you can add in any other plugin you like to do whatever you want with the sound.
Some things will be missing though because you can't isolate things that are at the same place in the stereo field and in the same frequency range.
I don't see how this is would be able to solve most mixing problems. Problems usually occur when instruments fight for frequencies. As long as they are not panned away from each other, you won't be able to isolate them.

There was already something like this in old Cakewalk Sonar called R-Mix, it had an ellipse shape and rectangular shape and allowed you to shift the selection I think. Too bad the plugin is defunct and 32 bit only. But it did the same thing and sounded the same

Super cool plugin for forensics and problem-solving. I see this as a good compliment to RX for nerdy stuff. One thing you didn’t try was creating two boxes at the same time. It must do that, right? I could see some uses for multiple boxes.

That's cleaner isolation than I've heard with stem separation software. Seems like it could have many potential uses
Personally I use spectralayers as it allows for even deeper processing, on individual phrases, you can separate different elements and add reverb to the end of a vocal phrase without touching anything else, removing noise etc

I did buy the ecoda from zplane but it sadly did not do what I thought it would do, it does work like ripx BUT you can't extract anything so it just analyse the notes and chords...so not sure if that peel is an useful tool for me

There's value in simplicity. It takes most people weeks/months/years to really get to grips with how a certain 'simple' tool like a compressor, EQ, whatever,... works and behaves. The danger with product like this, is that it potentially brings people further away from understanding the fundamental essentials and jumping straight into spectral isolation etc. Don't get me wrong, it's fantastic that tools like this even exist, but there's always a certain learning curve you have to go through as an engineer (like with most jobs). We have to be aware there's a danger in tools like A.I. assistants, auto-leveler aids, etc. A fundamental understanding and experience of the basic principles of audio can't be bypassed by using a magic tool. I'm convinced it's easy for people to think that certain tools will solve their audio related issues, when in reality it's their lack of basic understanding and coming to grips with the fundamentals of audio that is the real problem. Tools like this can add to the confusion. Worst of all is that their marketing is mostly aimed at the widest possible audience, promising them a solution for their ignorance. This is just a general statement and by no means 'targeted' at Wytse or PEEL specifically.
I think all of this is a byproduct of lack of education. Which you can think of as a negative, but also as a positive, because it could mean that more new people are producing music and possibly having a lot of fun with it. If they spend money on this and have fun playing around, I don't see a problem. There are objectively much worse things you can do with your money to have fun.

Not sure I'd use it for regular mixing (those artifacts are pretty over the top, I've heard better sounding 56kbps mp3s) but as a creative production and sound design tool there's so much potntial here, and the price is even fair!
I've been doing MIDI transcriptions of classic breakbeats recently and I can tell this is a lot better than the tools I've been using.
I like it. Seems like they could just add a gate to it or something to tighten up the leaking background noises. But yeah, when you isolated and routed the lead guitar and then added the delay, a light bulb went off in my head. I needs that. You can take a boring section and add such variety to it by switching to the solo guitar, then bringing in the delay then bringing back the background with the delay. same section but now you have ear candy for the listener. Great for arranging.
hmm, why not just use the isolated signal for the wet path of your effect? i.e. as a prefilter to the send?
what a cool concept
This sounds better than many of the "stem separation" stuff I've seen so far. This could actually be useful for learning songs, or perhaps recording a cover while removing the original part from the backing track.
Your example of mastering projects with a suboptimal mix is also one that came to mind. This plugin seems to be pretty versatile.
Yes and no. It will work relatively good with this kind of songs that have a lot of air in between the instruments and where they have their own place in freq/stereo matrix, but it will not work as good with songs filled with more stuff and instruments overlapping each others.

@@creativeheadroom Yeah, me too. I'm a bit disappointed he didn't try this on boarder spectrum of music. I cannot be bothered to try myself the demo with just 5 mins of use time.
@@anteshell Yeah, 5min demo time is uselss. If the devs are willing to increase the time it can be used, I'll definitely check it out. If it works well, I'll buy it at this price. It's not very expensive and I see some good options for using this.

That is definitely a useful tool!........Your exercise of adding verb to gtrs could be used everywhere. So many possibilities. I've never had any of these isolation plugins, so I don't know how it stacks up to others. Very affordable too 😉👍

It would be really cool as a problem finding tool if you could send it a whole mix and have it tell you what source tracks you are hearing the content from in the rectangle. Like sometimes, especially from a live recorded session or stage session, you are hearing some muddy rumble coming from somewhere and you have to go through a bunch of different tracks to find out that it's a bleed into one of the drum mics or a vocal mic or something. With a tool like this, you could easily and quickly find the problem sound and then find out which tracks its coming from to go and fix it properly.
Isotope insight has this kind of. You can color code tracks
Can be a great de-essing tool...or a transient suppressor maybe...have to check it out, thanks for the video!
You could use it to isolate a part you wanna learn or in karaoke lessen the vocals volume to allow people sing over..

I bought this about 2 years ago and emailed the company then with my view that this could be a great "visual mixing" aid. But there is an issue, like say when 2 mono guitars are panned L&R. For some reason they smear visually across the middle. Below was my comments to them...

I bought PEEL 2 days ago and love it! However my main usage would be a "visual mix tool" to help me see where I place instruments and how I EQ them to have their own spaces as I create music. I was wondering if you can tell me if there is anything to learn from the dots. density etc? I'm a bit confused about how you made them work.
First I hope you can develop it a bit more have an input dial or sensitivity slider. On weaker signals it will help to SEE whats going on better when I have a track solo'd etc. I turned up the gain going in... and that works for me, but of course it gave the actual music too much gain.
I noticed when I panned hard left... 1 mono acoustic guitar, the visual signal was very nice and defined in one area of the X&Y field. However when I doubled that guitar and panned hard right... the two guitars blurred across the whole image with dots... making it LOOK like it does when I add reverb etc.. instead of what I expected to have two clear images of my tracks panned L&R. Is this intentional? It kind of messes up how I'd use the plugin. Is there any way in the future to have a Preference setting to choose clear images of mono instruments like that?

This plugin got bashed when it first came out. I never understood why . It’s useful! But the negative reviews made me not dig in.

Zplane have been ahead of the game for years. In fact you probably already use their tech as it is licenced in other daws and plugins, especially if you've ever time stretched something.

This is going to be vital for handling 2-tracks without the original stems as you said. Especially since you can fine tune selections, unlike a typicall track splitter algorythm. Sonible please take notes, lol.

Is the reason you didn’t use your usual track that it wouldn’t work with usual track? Is it possible that this really only works with this one track because the tracks are separated in a very odd way that makes them very separate and therefore separately addressable? This was unlike any other presentation I’ve seen you make, it seems deceptive. Please tell me I’m wrong because I follow you all the time.
I know I’m wrong because I’ve seen a lot of your videos. I apologize for questioning you. But I’m convinced that the track used to demo the plugin shows the plugin in its very best light, and I can’t think of another track that places instruments this way in a stereo field. Thank you for what you do, and thank you for hearing me out. I’m 72, worked in the recording industry from the time I was 23, but as an arranger,not an engineer. I have learned so much from watching you. So again, thank you.

But it's based on old Spleeter technology, but with only better models. Demucs ft is much better already, or GAudio or MVSEP1 ru aka MDX23. Just not in DAW.

Each track should also get a separate color! Then we could see our mix. Also for some reason ... when I pan and filter 1 guitar left... it shows as a nice little representation of "where" it is in the mix field. But add a another new guitar to the mix and pan it the other way... the dots/image "blur" and scatter across the middle. Why can't it show just a new guitar panned the other side... like the left channel was. If they fix this It would really "show" where things sit and how they are eq'd. Take a solo'd instrument and filter pass the highs or lows... it actually shows when the sound is "getting out of the way" of another sound nearby.
Cool plugin. Although I recently tried a decent AI tool online. It can split a song into various parts such as vocals, bass, drums etc.. So using your track as an example, I think that AI might separate the guitar, piano and percussion parts more effectively than the plugin. But that's not from within the DAW, so this plugin has at least that one advantage.
