- The plaintiff paid the defendant to install a new skylight in his house. He claims the defendant took his money and ran. Now, he has a huge hole in his roof and squirrels keep coming in his house. He’s suing for his deposit back and extermination fees. The defendant argues the skylight company went out of business, and he sealed the roof.

I wouldn’t have hired the defendant to bury an ant hill. He doesn’t come off as capable of dressing himself much less work on a roof.

That was quite a turnaround from the Defendant's cocky opening statement...
I have no doubts that the Defendant was responsible for the squirrel holes. But unfortunately common sense wasn't going to over rule evidence that the Plaintiff should have been able to provide.

I love how the defendant glibly and unilaterally declares the other $400 of the deposit as his charge for the other work. That's not how contracts work. The $400 was part of the skylight contract.

Certain things you just shouldn't hire the cheapest handyman you can find to do the work...like a roof that can cause major damage in your home. Roofs sre a hire a licensed roofing company kinda thing
Some of these never should have even gotten on the show, this one's very simple if your going to be self employed this is one of the risks you take on. It's not the customers problem your supplier went out of business, it's yours, don't want to deal with hassles like this apply for a job working for someone else and they get the headaches. Life's all about trade off, get this lose that.

Fair ruling in this particular case for the plaintiff. Defendant had no defense. Doug unnecessarily piling it on afterwards.
That's why we love Doug !! He says what they need to hear to hopefully pull their heads outta their back ends and think twice before they act !
