  • ♦Edward had accomplished little, and while David had kept his throne and his nation’s freedom, the disconnect between the Scots and the English would never be fully resolved. This war was over, but it wasn’t the first, and wouldn’t be the last. Nor would it be Scotland’s final bid for independence…

    It has been well documented that the reason the Romans and later the English could not conquer Scotland was not due to resistance but because of midges. The Antonine wall built by the Romans was constructed of timber and turf, which when made damp by the inclement Scottish weather, made the perfect conditions for midges. No medication was available back then and the constant itchiness became infected due to scratching. This caused the occupants to beat a hasty retreat. Even today, mere tourists are advised to medicate before going there. You can be wandering peacefully through the spectacular Scottish landscape when suddenly clouds of the bloodthirsty creatures appear out of nowhere and attack relentlessly.

    • @scottw.3258
      @scottw.3258 Před 19 dny +5

      Your understanding is lacking, somewhat.
      Wallace wasn't fighting for the common Man. He was fighting for himself. He was minor nobility, so didn't have as much to lose as the main players, such as Bruce. The Nobles had much to lose by running in blindly. They had lands in England, remember, Scottish Nobles were of Norman stock, just like the English Nobles. They were of the same blood, and had in fact moved north from England where their families/ancestors all had land and therefore, money, and therefore, standing.
      Bruce and many other Scottish Nobles were well known for fighting with the English when it suited them, then fighting against the English when it suited them.
      Wallace would NEVER have been crowned King of Scots, he wasn't Noble enough, he was of Welsh stock(Wallace has the same etymology as Wales, and means 'foreigner'.) and therefore a Briton, not Norman. Andrew de Moray was the main hero, not Wallace. de Moray was the seasoned soldier. He had been involved in the taking of Carlisle in 1296 along with his Father, Sir Andrew de Moray. He was captured at the Battle of Dunbar(mentioned in this video), his Father was also captured and imprisoned in London, where he died. Andrew de Moray was imprisoned at Chester Castle. He escaped in the winter of 1296, and made his way North to his Fathers lands, whereupon he raised an army and went about freeing the settlements and Garrisons. Wallace moved North, de Moray moved South and the two armies amalgamated in Perth, from where they made their way to Stirling.
      It was indeed de Moray's leadership, experience and tactics which won the day at Stirling Bridge. Sadly, de Moray was mortally wounded and would die several months later as a result. Wallace didn't know how to lead an army, or tactics, and he totally messed up at Falkirk, choosing the wrong ground and tactics. The Scottish army was wiped out, and he ran. Once he came back, he was captured by a fellow Scot, Sir John de Menteith and sent to England for trial and execution.
      Don't be fooled into believing Wallace was a hero, and Bruce was a coward. These were very different times. Freedom didn't mean the same then, as now, Independence was very different too.

    I agree. The Scots are still not independent, and I doubt that full independence will really be achieved at any point in the future. Just from the standpoint of population and military power alone, England holds the upper hand and will continue to hold the upper hand should any conflict arise. And I mean this not just in the case of Scotland, but all of the Celtic peoples as well. The English outnumber the Celts combined, and the Celts would be hard-pressed to stand victorious against the English. And furthermore, why is the use of Gaelic and Welsh on the wane with all three of them?! Isn't language also a means by which national and ethnic identity is defined?! If the English language is spoken by the majority with all three peoples, doesn't that show where matters stand within the populace when it comes to separation and/or independence? And in regards to Ireland, part of it is still under English hegemony due to ethnic, national and sectarian politics, and who knows if full separation and/or independence will occur and take place!!!

    • @Emanon...

      You're assuming that Scots and Welsh have to militarily fight for their independence. That's a bit of a stretch, although not entirely an impossible scenario.

Research what Westminster did with our oil in comparison to our neighbors Norway, a few interesting videos to show you how our resources have been stolen and squandered. Not only has Scotland been left to rot, North of England, Wales and Northern Ireland also have lowest GDP per capita in Western Europe, all our industrious ruined over the last 100 years, the SNP failed but they did so with an already weakened economy and their hands tied behind their backs. We are supposedly the 6th richest country in the world but you wouldn't notice it walking around Scotland. The Union has been failing our country for a very long time but keep burying your head in the sand pal. Norway are now one of the most oil rich nations and set up a private trust fund which is the richest of it's kind in the entire world worth billions today, the Scottish population with the exact same amount of oil no longer economically benefits from it because all of our oil was sold from underneath our feet to give massive tax cuts to the rich, you can thank Margaret Thatcher for that one, 1 simple research on CZcams you'll see for yourself and if it doesn't anger you I don't know what will, they've been stealing our resources for a long time and there's a good reason why they are desperate for us to stay in the Union whilst the media spreading lies about us to the English population saying we are a tax burden etc.

    As an American, I get it. we have North and South here that's broke out in severe violence in our young history. This is over a 1k years of off and on fighting very interesting to learn about some times I'm on England side but other times I pick scottland. I grew up in New England, so that's why I got into English history. My state/ commonwealth, as its still called, still has the English lions from when they controlled the colonies on some older buildings in Boston.

      The north-south dynamic is very interesting indeed. And to think it was started before Scotland and England even existed. The romans essentially started it when they took over what is now England. Scotland was a bit too far north for them to stretch to to occupy for long enough, which basically gave 'England' the head start in population, infrastructure and weaponry. The divide of wealth and numbers was so evident that it ended up being roughly the same boarder long after the Roman empire ended. They were underdogs from the very start. Makes you wonder how things would have been different if the Roman empire had conquered the whole island. Would Scotland and France have taken over England? Maybe the British Empire would have never came to be. Then there wouldnt be a New England. It's crazy to think how far back it all goes. Then you think about wars today and how much impact it could have in another 1000 years

    I'm a very British Scot and proud of it. I need no Frenchman or any other nationality to tell me what is best, as for English people making racist comments about Scots, well I served in the British army and again proud to have done so for my queen and country, unless you have done so, I suggest you look at the sacrifices made by Scots in service. A quarter of a million in two world wars from Glasgow alone. Show some respect.

    The Scot’s were lucky they had the French to support them against the English. The English were not just fighting the Scot’s but had the French battles too. Most battles were between the English and French.
    Also to note, the Scot’s were the original invaders centuries earlier and they came from Ireland who wiped out the Picts ( the Caledonians north British people) So the Scottish are not the indigenous people in Scotland (Caledonia) it was the Celtic Picts
