    I like John's original demo and in some ways I wish they'd held on the "I don't wanna lose you" falsetto bit but I do like The Beatles new version overall. I kind of wish they'd used their time in the mid 90's more on making a backing track and possible overdubs than fighting with the quality of John's tape though so we could have had more George on the track.

    • @EddyCannistraci
      @EddyCannistraci  Před 8 měsíci

      I think George only played a bit of guitar back when they worked on it in the 90s, so there wasn't much they could do in that regard. The Beatles' tracks -- especially by the time they got to The White Album -- didn't always involve every member, so the fact that there's minimal George doesn't bother me. One of my issues with "Free As A Bird" was them inserting every member so prominently and not allowing it to primarily be "a John song" y'know.

    John in a round about way did give Paul consent as the demo was on a cassette labeled "To Paul" which Ono said nothing about it until the early 90s. John, Paul and George were demoing songs in the late 70s and early 80s with the intention of working together as the fan four on Ringo's album slated for early 81. Allan Douglas talks about this in interviews about conversations he had with John while producing Double Fantasy. John was expecting feedback from Paul. The tape never got to Paul in the 80s as he wasn't aware of it.

    • @EddyCannistraci
      @EddyCannistraci  Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks for weighing in: I didn't know about what Allan Douglas said about the demos, which makes sense. Of course that's not the same as giving consent for Paul to turn that demo into a Beatles song in the 21st Century. I stick by what I said in that regard: John would hate it. At least the John of 1980 would've hated it. In his last Playboy interview he was back on the pro Ono, anti Beatle/McCartney tip. Yeah, if John wasn't murdered, he might've loosened up in this regard as he got older and who knows? Maybe he would've come around to writing with Paul again or even wanted to do a Beatles reunion. However, we can never know that. I'm just going by who the man was around the time of his death (and for the majority of the 1970s). Like I said in the video: I'm glad they did it and I think Paul did well by John (at least musically speaking). But again, that's not the same as John giving his consent to make "Now and Then" a Beatles song. Wanting feedback on songs he was considering for a Ringo album is not quite the same thing as using his voice on the demo and making it a Beatles song post his death.

      @@EddyCannistraci I'm gonna take a step forward on this and say, I think there was "John" the public superstar that enjoyed rattling cages in the public eye and then there was "John" the sentimental guy behind doors. If you listen to Allan Douglas talk about the sessions for Double Fantasy, he spoke of how often John would break into "Beatles jams" during the sessions with the session players and would even brag about the The Beatles and say they were best "fing" band ever. Additionally I'd even guess (this is just me reading between the lines here I will admit) and say that John acted one way when Ono was present and another when he was just being with the boys in the studio. For whatever reason, I feel that she intimidated him.

      @@jarret-phillipmarcel6520 You've definitely done your research and I think you have a lot of insight regarding John's personality. In the mid 70s, during his separation from Yoko, he suddenly had very positive and nice things to say about Paul to the press (he even said Band on the Run was "a great album") and he was planning on collaborating with Paul on a song on Venus and Mars (which I'm sure you know), but as soon as Yoko beckoned and accepted him back into her life -- bam -- no collaboration with Paul and in the 1980 interview, John's back to dismissing all of Paul's work after the Beatles. Obviously Yoko had a powerful influence over John and he was acting out an" abandoned mother" thing with her (he even called her "Mother"). So yeah, maybe deep down inside John wanted to work with Paul again and was using these demos as a way of tiptoeing back into it (without making "Mother" mad at him).Once again, great insights, Jarret. You made me feel better about enjoying this song!

      I have mixed feelings about the video too: I found when "Happy Hello Goodbye John" was dancing around during the beautiful and wistful guitar solo cringey and tonally off. Still it's better than the Stones' Angry video. At least you see old Paul and old Ringo in it and you see them actually working on the song.

    Witty, perceptive & irreverent take on the new release( I especially loved the 'Macca, as in Machiavellian quip!). I love the subtle layers that make the track a real grower. John did throw Paul a lot of jibes Paul's way but, deep down I think he missed him.. 'Woman' from 1980 is ostensibly about Yoko, but the melody & tone of that track is so similar to 'Here, There & Everywhere'...John's favourite Beatles song( by McCartney). Paul says that when he writes a new song he wonders if John would have dug it or not...so, they always seemed to be channelling messages back & forth in a subliminal way...even after the horror of December, 8th, 1980...

    • @EddyCannistraci
      @EddyCannistraci  Před 8 měsíci +2

      Thanks for your thoughtful comment as always. Despite my sassing of the lads, I agree that deep down John thought Paul was the shit. A revealing compliment would often slip through his jabs in interviews (recognizing Paul as a great bassist and songwriting partner). And I think if John had lived, Paul and him would've at very least recorded a Jimmy Page and Robert Plant style collaboration album if not a full-fledged reunion.

      @@EddyCannistraci I always had the feeling that if John had lived Bob Geldof would have persuaded The Beatles ( & Bob Marley, come to think of it, if HE had been spared also) to do something for Live-Aid. That show reunited Zep, Sabbath & The Who into an appearance...admittedly, with mixed results. Geldof also got Floyd back with Roger Waters for Live 8 ...20 years later( let's face it, that will NEVER happen again)!

      @@EddyCannistraci two interesting things the demo tape Yoke gave Paul with Real Love, Free as a bird and Now and Then had 'For Paul" written on it. So I assume, John was thinking at least that Paul's input was something he was interested in (who knows maybe was toying in his mind with a reunion.). The second thing (and I don't subscribe to anything mystical) The last words John said to Paul were along the lines of "Think of me now and then old Friend." Which I'm sure caused a special connection for Paul with the song. It is probably a reason he couldn't let it go even after Harrison had called the song, "Fucking Rubbish." Anyway, great review. Enjoyed it.

    Most AI generated songs (as any AI generated thing) are pretty ugly for a very simple reason: people doesn't know how to use this AI technology!
    For a person of my age, I consider AI a great innovation and, not just useful but very entertaining too.
    Let's start saying that NOBODY has any problem with adding effects to guitars, but, for some mysterious reason most people have a big problem with effects added to vocals, and I insists in calling it "mysterious" because nobody is able to tell why ... it's like when asking for a personal opinion people's brain short-circuits !
    Nevermind that, let me explain why AI songs sounds WRONG: if you want to make an AI song in the style of Michael Jackson you gotta sing the "eh eh" and the "shammon", do not expect the AI to add it for you ... and if you do not do anything to imitate the voice of the singer you want to use in your AI song, logically the song will sound wrong ... and WRONG is the right word to use.
    Most of us didn't like Now and Then at fist because the piano, the bass and the drums sound too modern and too bedroom pop at the same time ... nothing like any other Beatles song.
    We need to teach our brain to understand why we don't like something, rather than just force us to like something by listening for days on end. That's manipulating ourselves .... and it is probably not a smart thing to do !!! We've already seen between 2020 and 2022 what happens when people conform to the norm by forcing oneself to conform to the norm (yeah ... I know ... sounds like a conspiracy theory ... that's because you've been exposed to this mentality ... it is not your thought).

    • @EddyCannistraci
      @EddyCannistraci  Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks for your very thoughtful comment and you've brought up a lot of great points about AI and how our minds react to things we're not used to: I agree with both your takes on the subject. I'm an Oasis fan and I've kept up with Liam and Noel in their solo careers, plus I like some modern pop acts like Lana Del Rey, so I think that's why the more modern production sound didn't bother me (although I'd prefer it to be less brickwalled like most pop music for the past 20 years). Like you said, I think most people attempting to recreate the sound of deceased artists with AI are bound to fail to some degree because they'll never replicate the X factor (the little unexpected and off the cuff moments that the best artists usually exhibit). But that doesn't mean there can't be great art created via AI just like any other technology and like I said in my video, I think AI has become too much of a buzz word and it makes it seem disconnected from past advancements in computer technology and therefore more foreign than it actually is.
