    Thank you for this info.
    I’m 68yo and want to (eventually) get off heart meds. Understand I may have to be on heart meds for life but a reduction in dosage would be good too.

    Looking forward to your next vid.

    I used to delay taking my beta blockers until after going cycling which can be 50k up to 100k so my heart rate can increase to get speed and more maintained power but after watching your video I don't think it was wise to delay it but thinking about it I don't think there's much difference in power and speed with a reduced heart rate after experimenting, even though with beta blockers I'd get 50 bpm up to 130 bpm whereas delaying it would get to 150+, this is using 2.5 of bisoprolol, an hour after exercise my blood pressure would drop to around 113/54 whereas before exercise it would be a little high....thanks for the video

My question is will my BP rise if I am no longer on the Beta Blockers and is there an alternative medication that will do what the Beta Blocker do without these awful side effects. The beta blocker has more of an effect on lowering heart rate, and in effect, will also lower blood pressure. So you may see blood pressure changes if you come off this medication. My suggestion would be to speak with your doctor to discuss the side effects and see if there are alternatives. Your doctor has a clear understanding of your medical history, so they would be the best person to decide which medications are best for you.

    I have just had a mitral valve repair 8 weeks ago. I was put on bisoprolol 2.5 mg. You have to take these seriously. I have just had a rebound as took it in evening instead of morning after quite an active day. Scared the hell out of me as I thought I was having a stroke. Went to A&E and got the all clear. Nevertheless, I wonder if I would be better off the beta blocker altogether. Research seems to indicate blockers don’t really extend life or reduce stroke risk. I feel trapped by it and would like to return to exercise and weight training when I can.

      @@trippingonfaith7094 The research I have seen doesn’t say they don’t work. They clearly do lower heart rate and blood pressure. It says the evidence doesn’t support the fact that beta blockers extend life or prevent stroke. Just google for info. I’m terrified not to take mine now. It has been over three months since my op and I have still not had a consultation with my cardiologist. I am on a waiting list.
      I have started exercising and I feel ok. Don’t know how I would feel without bisoprolol. Side effects now are minor dizziness. I otherwise seem to have got used to it.
      There is a retired doctor I work with who has had a bypass. He says he is very intolerant of bisoprolol and 0.25 mg per day is his max or he is too dizzy. I was told 2.5 mg is a baby dose which it clearly isn’t. Everyone reacts differently.
      I think you have to speak to your doctor. Coming off this stuff isn’t easy and shouldn’t be done suddenly. My rebound experience was lesson enough. I’m just going to wait til I can finally get proper medical advice. Good luck!

      I had a mitral valve repair too in June and they also put me on at 50 mg a day of Metoprolol.
      In my case I think they are taking a wait and see approach and using it as a temporary stopgap measure to keep me from going into AFIB, As I am at risk of that given that my left atrium dilated. They're hoping that it remodels somewhat and to see if they could take me off then.

I think I feel the odd bit of afib, but the episodes are getting less frequent. When I finally saw my cardiologist after around 8 months he suggested he would have my GP reduce the dose and see how it goes. I’ve not heard from GP as yet, but I suppose I will have to go with it and try. I suspect my BP will go up, but if they can safely wean me off then I suppose I’m better off.

      @nextgenrehab  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks for the question Kimberly. An SVT is a type of arrhythmia and your doctor has properly put you on a medication that will help control this. In terms of how long you will be on the medication it is a good discussion to have with your doctor. In terms of exercise I would suggest being referred by your family physician to a cardiac rehab program where they can safely prescribe an exercise prescription for you and monitor your heart rhythm as you exercise. This will allow you to be in a controlled setting while being monitored. You can have your questions answered by the staff and continue to build confidence as you return to exercise. Hopefully this helps.

      @nextgenrehab  Před 5 lety +1

      Hi Tyler thanks for your question. You do not need to take either a beta blocker or blood thinners unless they have been prescribed to you by your doctor. From what it sounds like, the extreme fatigue and spike in heart rate is most likely due to deconditioning. I would recommend setting a regiment to help train your cardiovascular system to be able to tolerate longer runs. Over time your heart will become more efficient at circulating blood through your body and begin to beat at a lower rate at a given workload. As for you blood pressure check it at different times of the day to make sure it is elevated above normal. Try lifestyle changes like diet, weight loss and exercise to help control the blood pressure. If these strategies don't work then speak with your doctor on potential medications you can take to help control the blood pressure.

I had stopped the Red Bull completely for 2 Days and I think my body was just detoxing. They ran the gambit of tests and didn’t find anything wrong at the hospital

Once I weened myself down to about 7 mg a day I noticed that my heart rate is now functioning much better when I’m on the treadmill. Hey Mark, glad to hear your keeping yourself active ! That is the toughest thing people find with beta blockers as it doesn't allow the heart rate to increase. As long as you feel comfortable exercising and can maintain a moderate pace without any symptoms or shortness of breathe your in good shape. And definitely as you increase workload and your body adapts to it, you become more efficient and moving oxygen around your body which means your heart doesn't need to work as hard. Keep up the good work!

      Since I don't know your full medical history, you should follow up with your family doctor about this. However, you should be able to train boxing while taking beta blockers. Remember, don't expect your heart rate to go to high while on this medication. You want to train in a range where you can still say a full sentence before having to take a breathe. If you can only say 1-2 words, you're pushing yourself too hard.

      @nextgenrehab  Před 3 lety +5

      You would need to consider a few things like the dose of the medication and how sensitive your body is to the medication (how low does it keep your heart rate with exercise). Since this medication will be lowering your heart rate and preventing it from getting too high, to get a clear idea of how hard to push yourself, I would consider having a stress test done. This test can determine a safe training range and target heart rate for you. Because your heart rate won't be going as high as it was previous to taking this medication, focus on how you feel. Continue to use the talk test "can I talk while exercising" and don't overdo it to the point of exhaustion (where you're gasping for air and can't talk." If you still have questions, I would bring it up with your family doctor as they have your medical history.

I want to get off of this drug. I have an appointment with my endocrinologist on 1/30/23. My vo2 max on my Apple Watch always says that I’m below average. That’s because of this drug right?

    • @nextgenrehab
      @nextgenrehab  Před rokem +1

      Yes the atenolol will suppress your heart rate when you are exercising. The Apple Watch is taking into account your age for someone not on a beta blocker, so it will not be reliable to give you a VO2max or a target heart rate. I would recommend you speak with your endocrinologist or cardiologist to set up a stress test or a VO2max test (known as a cardiopulmonary exercise test). This will give you a better idea of your VO2max and target heart rate if you remain on the beta blocker.

      It's a good conversation to have with your doctor. If it's anxiety that's causing the rise in heart rate maybe start with techniques like deep breathing to help manage the fast heart rate. But discussing this with your doctor is the best option, especially if your resting heart rate is elevated in the 90's or 100's.
