Christopher Eccleston's Panel at Rose City Comic Con

  • Christopher Eccleston's first fan convention appearance in the US. The panel was all audience Q&A and he addressed his experiences on the show and the aftermath once he left. His humor and charm show through as he talks about his love of science fiction, his fanboy moments, and his experiences as a Shakespearean actor.
UPDATE: If you can't say something nice, don't say it. Insulting, rude, and comments that I consider to be overly negative will be removed. I posted this because I had a couple of friends who couldn't make it and wanted to share with them any anyone else who couldn't be there in person. My channel is not a place to make fun of others or make them feel bad about how they express their fandom (and to the person who made disparaging comments about American fans, it's super dumb to do that on an American's channel). Thanks y'all.

UPDATE: Comments are now moderated. Apparently, some can't resist their impulses to be rude, insulting, and childish. I'm making sure that if you can't say something nice, you are muzzled. Sorry if it takes a while for you comment to appear, I might be doing some other things in between moderating comments.
Apparently, some people don't take me seriously when I say I will delete comments. Be civil, keep away from insults and profanity and you're ok. Childish name calling or generally being rude/incendiary will only get you removed without warning. I'd rather not move to having to approve all comments because I have a life and a job, but it's an option out there.

It is absolutely fantastic that Chris is airing out his demons, over his feud with the BBC and finally making the round with DW fandom. Shame it couldn't have occurred before the 50th; would have loved to see him in action one more time, but we'll take what we can get

This video has reminded me both of how much I love Christopher Eccleston and the ninth Doctor. it's so brilliant to hear him talk so openly about the role, and I love how much his sense of humour shines through too. Also it shows you the kind of person he is, as with all the awful things happening whilst he was the Doctor and in the aftermath, for him to be able to talk about that in the open is fantastic. I just hope that one day he plays the part again for Big Finish!

This is a superb panel, I love how open and honest Chris is and I respect that he praises RTD despite his personal differences. I’m soo pleased he’s started talking to the fans and gets to see the love we have for him. He is an incredible actor, a fantastic doctor and a lovely man.
I feel so sad that he was vilified for soo long. Even if he wanted nothing to do with DW it doesn’t change the amazing contribution he made to the show.
    Thank you Chris

I have been amazed at the fact that Russell and Chris have both spoken in interviews openly about their relationship and time working together. And both have been flattering about each other professionally, in spite of what may have happened between them. In fact, when Russel was asked to comment on the 'break-up' after Chris first complained about being treated badly in the aftermath of the show, he said something like "I had a duty of care to Chris as my lead actor, and that still applies now. So I don't think I'll make this a public fight. I love Chris, and he's a fantastic actor." They've both impressed me in their ways of dealing with this situation, and Chris in particular consistently strikes me as one of the most compellingly sincere interviewees I've ever seen.

Chris is a very private man, and it's very hard for someone like that to embrace being an icon. It makes me appreciate that embrace he's made even more. He's a bloody brilliant actor, and a great man. He doesn't need to go to these conventions but he does. It may be easy for louder characters like Capaldi or Smith but I imagine it's hard for someone like Chris. Really great man.

Patrick Troughton found conventions difficult at first for much the same reasons. But he ended up loving them because he was so warmly received by the fans. Hopefully it will be the same for Chris.

One of the ways I could spend time with my with dad was watching Star Trek.' lol, this reminded me of that Dead Ringers sketch when Christopher Eccleston walks into his house in his Doctor Who costume and his family are sitting there in Star Trek uniforms and his dad says 'How could you do this to us, son!? You know we're a lifelong Trekkie family. You've broken your mother's heart! Three months she spent knitting your Ferengi ears!' and Chris says 'Oh shut up, it doesn't matter, I've got a new job now anyway: Blakes 7 The Movie.' Throughout the 43 minute video, there are some dark moments, where he is brutally honest and yet still manages to answer each question in a calm, comedic and nuanced manner. While I didn't agree with all his answers, I did agree that something potentially good could come from this period of time. Hopefully, you can see that the words that I used was not meant to criticize and disparage, but to say that Eccleston is unapologetically defending himself, and that if you (not you Dietrich, the audience) are a right-wing snowflake who put cannot aside your political beliefs for 43 minutes and listen to a wonderful actor talk about the experience that is Doctor WHO, than you should not watch. 21:56 - I was at a stage door with some autograph hounds. I wanted two items done - one of which was a picture of the two of us. He very bluntly told me no and got very nearly into a fight with the autograph hunters. It haunts me to this day - sounds dramatic but here's your hero basically telling you to f*** off then nearly fighting two others. To be fair they were scum but the items were for me. He did sign one item but in a way to not have experienced that I would take the autograph away happily as it has massively negative connotation.. Since then, he's embraced the convention scene and I'd buy his signature all day long FOR ME. Glad he understands that now.

    • @donnademure564
      @donnademure564  Před 4 lety +1

Well, I think it's the context. He specifically came to the con to meet fans, take photos, and do autographs. I can honestly say he was lovely, shook every single hand, looked us in the eye, and thanked us for being there. Unfortunately, you were there in a time and place where, not only had he just finished a hard day of work (doing a daily live performance can be very exhausting), but he was feeling harassed by those even you described as "scum." I'm not saying he couldn't have handled the situation better, but he's human and makes mistakes. I'm sure that if you saw him in the correct context and told him your story and how it made you feel, he'd likely be very apologetic. I admit that this is my opinion, but I got the feeling he's in a different mental space now and that can change things. Nonetheless, I'm sorry that this happened to you.

@@donnademure564 oh no, I agree. I met him when he was doing a charity event for a theatre close to his heart in the UK and he was LOVELY. However this particularly time it was a one off rehearsed reading and only there for the day and he went off...like a different guy. However around the same time it seems he checked into a pyschiatric facility so I get it. He was also lovely when I met him again at comic con in London...what I'm saying is, I felt awful for waiting outside a stage door to get his autograph because he clearly didn't want to do them due to auto hounds - which to be fair, the other two were. For me tho, I literally wanted my book signed and a cherished memory of the two of us together. It tarnished that, but reading excerpts of his biography and his mental health and how he was treated it all makes sense.

You're fine. I used to work in radio and I could not stand to listen to myself, so a lot of people hate the sound of their own voice, but nobody else really hears anything wrong with it.

I think Russell T. Davies IS a genius, my Mum loved him... However, i started following him on Instagram, i made a Doctor Who poster of one of his episodes, i tagged him when i put it on instagram, and he BLOCKED me. So i think he's an amazing writer and an asshole.

Firstly let me preface this comment by saying that i have no intention of insulting any persons, races or gender. That bein said i think Chris' attitude on the "white men" is not quite right, in my opinion. Firstly and most importantly i believe in equality for everyone. Every race, gender, hair colour... whatever. Equal all round. Hire an actor for their acting ability not their race or any other label society has created. However my problem is that everyone seems to think that the best way to get equality is to degrade and talk down to and about white men to bring them down to the level of everyone else. In my opinion this is backwards thinking. Instead of trying to drag white men down off of this supposed pedestal that we are all on lets work on raising up everyone else until we are all equal. Then we all get to sit at the top of the proverbial mountain.

He did not degrade or insult middle aged white men. He said it was time for them to step aside.

True equality can only be achieved with a level playing field. Yes, people's noses are going to be put out of joint but it's what needs to happen for a true meritocracy to work. What's currently happening is a transition from one school of thought to another. It's just the progress of change, that's all.

Donna your language is perfect then. Step aside most definitely, but no stepping down.

Right off the bat with the cringy fan questions...

That was the whole theme of the panel...fan questions. I'm sure he could have gone in a different direction if he didn't want to answer potentially "cringy" questions. I think he was ready to answer them all

Lu, don't let them bring you down. Some people just can't say nice things. I'm deciding to moderate comments now to keep this from happening. I may still delete the comment.

Donna Dietrich aw thanks but I was really just trying to freak them out😂. Some people on the internet could use being reminded that the people they insult are real
