    Hey guys This week I will be Installing Exterior down lights aka soffit lights. If you have done any electrical work before then it wont be a hard project. But if your brand new to Electrical work then I suggest you familiarize yourself with the basics before you get started.
    Disclaimer Working with electricity is dangerous If you do not know what your doing hire someone with the proper training to do it for you. I am not a licensed electrician, I am only showing you how I installed these lights.
    There are a lot of details covered in this video and I don't have enough space to type it all out. So the important parts are the wiring, in this case its really simple. The wires going into the lights, all you have to do is connect all blacks together, all whites together, and all grounds together. Inside the switch box you will connect both whites together and connect both grounds to the ground on your switch, then connect one black wire to one side of the switch and the other black wire to the opposite side of the switch as shown in the video. To bring power to your light switch you will need to splice into an existing wire on the same circuit.

    Nice - I've been wanting to install soffit lights around the perimeter of the house - you make it look easy!

      I'm glad you liked the video! And I hope your project goes well. The only thing I didnt show in the video was splicing into an existing wire. But I've got another video that goes over that if your interested in seeing it. Just go to my channel and look for the ceiling fan installation video.

    Your lights are wired in parallel. If they were wired in series, they wouldn’t work properly. You have them daisy-chained together. Loads are almost always wired in parallel to keep the voltage the same across the loads.

    Romex connectors are the plastic clamps. Great video!

    Do you caulk the holes left behind from an unlevel mounting surface?

    • @BuildStuffwithAJ
      @BuildStuffwithAJ  Před 3 lety +2

      You certainly can do that, it would definitely look better than leaving a gap. But keep in mind if you ever need to work on the light for what ever reason it will make it that much harder to take out. With that being said, it's really up to you which works best on your situation.

    Any idea of what is used for the Gable Peak lights? I see them on a lot of houses and they look like spot lights pointing down from each peak.

      I apologize for the delay in response, But I personally haven't looked into the gable peak lighting so unfortunately cant help you there.

    How do you protect or mount the wires between each light in the soffit? Are they just loose up there?

    Was that vinyl soffit or aluminum just wanted to know if the vinyl supported the light.

    Could you daisy-chain existing recessed lights from a garage to your soffit light, or is it best to just create a new switch?

      @BuildStuffwithAJ  Před 3 lety +1

      I'm dont see why you couldn't, but I'm not a licensed electrician so I can't say for certain that it would be up to code.

    what distance from the wall do you install soffit lights?

    • @BuildStuffwithAJ
      @BuildStuffwithAJ  Před rokem

      Honestly I feel like that's up to personal preference, I like to go right in the middle of the soffit.

    I am not clear where I am hooking into power there is no attic light and the closest outlet is in the garage . I want lights around the entire perimeter of the home. Guess a drawing is what I need.

    dont think you need to drill right through the wood part above soffits that big!! leaves nice rat mice and squirrel entry points

    • @BuildStuffwithAJ
      @BuildStuffwithAJ  Před 3 lety +1

      I did have to drill through the wooden soffit actually, there wasn't enough clearance for the lights to swivel to the position I wanted them. If you have more clearance then you could get away with just drilling a hole big enough for the wire.
