S1000R vs R1250R Donington track day ※ fastest lap comparison

  • Now I'll be the first person to tell you that these are not particularly fast laps of Donington! This is really just a comparison showing where I have improved on my second track day here, compared to my first visit to the track a year earlier on my old S1000R.
    I think I was on for beating last years' time by at about a second before I had to slow down at the Foggy Esses and the Melbourne Loop.

    Very interesting video. Thanks Ricky. Enjoyed it. At 'public road' speeds to me there is not much difference between a 1250 boxer engine and a sports straight 4. If anything the boxer has superb torque at low revs. But then I ride to also enjoy the countryside and villages I pass through, plus the B-road twisties. Avoid the fens, the amount of subsidence is crazy and a potential death trap. Rode there this afternoon, ended up at 40 mph watching every dip and side collapse, was on edge.

      @RikkyTang  Před 2 lety +3

      I do think that 1250 makes a much better road bike for me than my S1000 because of the huge midrange torque... it sounds less hectic but goes just as fast in the real world so I'm more than happy with my decision to switch bikes 😊 I've not sampled the fens before - I used to read about them in Performance Bikes magazine many years ago but it sounds like the roads are not being maintained properly now which is a shame.

    In all fairness you are quicker at the apex on the R1250R then the S1000R. 1000R is quicker in the straights plus the condition were better so U braked later on the 1000R. Plus you got held up at the end on the lap. So I recon you probably would do the same time on bouth bikes. And that is the thing I remember I did the same times on the 750 as on the 1000. It wasn't the bike that was holding me back but my abilities. Your brain has a safe /comfort zone at wich one can ride. And as long as the bikes have similar group clearance and brakes you will do same time on any bike. Only training your brain(getting use to track grip levels speed of corner entry ect)will expend you comfort zone will allow you to go qicker.

      There is still a lot for me to learn about going fast around Donington and yeah you can see the progress which I'm happy with; there were places on the 1250 where I was opening the throttle where I had kept it neutral on the S1000. Obviously I haven't got the S1000 any more but by the time I have my third or fourth visit there on the 1250 I'm sure I can get down to around 1.56 or faster - as you say it's a matter of ability and experience. I'll get some track tuition too at some point next year and that will help me understand where the bottlenecks are which are holding me back 👍

      One of the greatest things about the Boxer twin and Paralever - the ability to get on the throttle so early at the apex. The superior torque (c.+20lbsft) of the 1250 just gives immense drive that can only be made up for with HP on the straights... Key reason why the R1250 boxer is such a brilliant fast road bike. Hard to beat the low and midrange torque.

      @@RikkyTang Ricky, just a thought. Your S1000 was a few years old and most likely fully broken in. On the boxers, break-in is much longer? I remember my 99' R1100R loosening up quite a bit after 20k miles. I have a feeling that once completely broken in that the R1250R would be a tad faster than the S1000, other than in a straight-line race.

    This looks like a "video game" to me. Colors, graphics bldgs..etc. Am I the only one ? Maybe so, maybe my laptop...don't know. Excellent depiction and demo either way. Thanks to the poster. I bought a new 2020 R1250R back in 20 and couldn't agree more with you on every comment given. I have been fortunate to have owned 50 + bikes (7 were BMW combo's of GS's RS's S's) and ridden 50+ more and this bike "to me" is the most confidence instilling, smooth, FAST, carving all rounder I have ever owned or ridden. Perfect ergo's, so smooth and sophisticated steed. In more capable hands than mine it would hold it's own against 90% of production bikes out there save some of the superbikes. To put this in perspective, in the twisty mountains i have witnessed talented riders on GS's spank the leathers off Duc's, GSXR's and the like on a 550# GS. As we all know its' the rider not the bike...BUT it shows what they are capable of and this "R" is way better than me.

      Yes I would also say that the R is better than me too! I'm back again at the same track on my R at the end of April... hopefully I can go a bit quicker again. Somehow the GS makes for an excellent road bike despite its size and weight - I'm looking forward to the next version of both the GS and the R... and I'll probably buy one of them 😊

      @@RikkyTang I look forward to that romp mate ! Will keep an eye out for the vid. Side note, being a HUGE F1 fan here stateside back in the 90's here in San Francisco we had a pub called "Donington Park" ! The chap that owned it was from your side of the pond. This is back when we had to get up at 3:30 a.m. to watch F1 on ESPN or slap a tape in the VCR to record it. Well, this bloke who owned the pub would do just that...record it then play it back in the afternoon at the pub! Which ever country was holding the race he would put out a big spread of that country's food ! All we had to do was buy the brew and watch the race on CRT's in each corner. To get in the pool you put in 20 quid and pull a drivers name from a hat. I never won as I usually ended up with Katayama or Verstappen 8 times out of 10 ! Needless to say there were more than a few headaches at work Monday morning ! LOL

    Thanks for posting this video! Great riding and nice bikes. I’m getting an r1250rs soon and it’s really encouraging to see you ride its sibling on track. At your pace on the r1250r, did you need to drag your knee, and were you concerned at any point that either cylinder head would touch the ground while leaned over?

    • @RikkyTang
      @RikkyTang  Před 2 lety +6

      I didn't drag my knee on the 1250 - to be honest it was my first kneedown ever last year in the other clip on the S1000R so it doesn't feel natural yet to go for kneedowns!
      I am a bit concerned about touching the heads down but it won't stop me taking the bike to the track! The peg feelers and centre stand touch down before the heads so you do get some advance warning 😁

      @RikkyTang  Před 2 lety +1

      It's a quick bike for sure, however if you are used to inline fours, it lacks the top end rush of those engines. I won't lie and say I don't miss the top end of a four but only really at the track because that's the only place a 180+ BHP 4 cylinder bike can be fully exloited. The midrange is huge on this bike and that's what I love about it but perhaps if you want the best of both worlds, a KTM Super Duke (or Super Adventure) would be worth a test ride too 👍
