  • Scott and Karl delve into James Howard Kunstler's 2008 end-of-days novel, World Made by Hand.
James Howard Kunstler is an American author, social critic, public speaker, and blogger, perhaps best known for his 2005 novel, The Long Emergency. He has an active podcast, KunstlerCast, where you can find more of his honest urban commentary.
World Made by Hand is from your typical post-apocalyptic novel. Scott says, "It's not an unpleasant world that he pictures for us after the simplification." Karl believes that Kunstler is even optimistic despite the novel being set in a post-oil American future.
Scott points out, "This is a world where everything feels big. They grieve more, there's more death and it's closer, but they care more about the people that they do have, too."
Tune in to hear the duo's discussion of this dystopian science-fiction novel. Brought to you by onlinegreatbooks.com.

Im on the last book in the 4 part series. I really liked the books. Its a good view of a post apocalyptic world. Most post apocalyptic stories are extremely negative and offer little hope for anyone. Kunstler paints, which I believe, is a more realistic view of the scenario. He shows how humans can be self organizing and how they reform local communities.

"Everything is bigger in this world" well said. Another great conversation, thank you for sharing.
Humanity has been sold a bill of papers on more papers, falling into a state dilution in believing we can control Nature and live "above" it opposed to be subjected to it or more precisely Natural Law.
If it takes 17 calories to extract 1 calorie, then we obviously have been doing it wrong. The only way to balance that equation is to grow food and harvest it from your garden. We have only learned in the resent 60 years how to grow food naturally, utilizing the Biosphere's natural intelligence to custodian the growth of food and vegetation. Yes, I'm referring to Permaculture, which requires a revolution in living inline with Nature opposed to try and control it but rather assist it.
Man, you hit it on the nail Scott! "Don't tell me what happened, tell me how.."
Great point on marriage. Marriage is a public interest of concern, it's a contractual union of monetary value, the largest transactions in ancient civilization were marriage contracts. There is a better way.
To answer your question Scott." Dear listener are there any of you who thinks that there is not going to be a simplification...? Not to the layman that can learn the intelligence of nature and to harness the suppressed knowledge that interacts with it. Yes to the citizen that follows the illegal directives of their crony governance.
Really one of the best conversations!

Good grief I've not actually heard an objective and balanced book review in ages, anywhere! It's good to have found you.
The novels are based in Union Grove which is modelled on the current town he resides in, Greenwich. The pre civil war name for Greenwich was Union.
Part of the story also focuses on nuclear bombs taking out DC and LA. At the moment that isn't too much of a reach either.
You also iterate a point I often make, alternative power is a hope not a plan.

I should also add that JHK is actually a registered Democrat. As he says he hasn't left the Democrat party, it left him. He, like I, is a JFK Democrat. Certainly JFK wouldn't recognise the party at all now.

50 shades of grey for middle-aged men haha. But I guess post apocalyptic stories are kinda like pizza and bjs.
