GoldenEye's Frigate level, since 2012, has been home to an obscure strategy; a technique, deemed "so ridiculous", that in the near-decade since it was discovered; no one had bothered to put it to use. But that all changed when an underdog speedrunner, "WhiteTed", attempted to play for the world record, Frigate Agent 0:22, one of Karl Jobst's defining untied world records. This is the story of Ted's pursuit of an amazing world record, speedrunning analysis & explanations, on just how he managed to pull off this incredible feat!

Time stamping the ad placement is an insane power move
Yeah I like when people do that, or have a separate timer or bar pop up to indicate how much ad is left. Makes me much more inclined to watch it tbh
Good vid tbh you covered the 1.2 problems much better than my tute :) . I've actually TASed 19 which was super tight - it's in my Frigate TAS sweep vid where I did SA and 00A as well. Also I did stream every attempt which 'only' totaled about 50 hours (with a long hiatus), so I think even for top players it's well worth doing (pales in comparison to Ace's hours I think :/ ). A decent slice of that was tweaking a lot of the detail in the strat, particularly after the bug throw. Final fun fact is I'd actually been streaming without voice for some number of streams before the sesh when I got 22, because I wanted to stay more focused. I felt pretty comfortable so I started with voice again and got it precisely 22 minutes into the sesh - you were nearly denied that reaction :)
At the win stats screen, I can see the cross hair drifting up. I'm guessing that's for the long shot at the starting cut scene, correct?
I think you achieve that by holding down on the stick during power on, maybe?
P. S. Congrats on your run!
So, now that you're Mr. 2.3, are you going to try Bunker 1 SA (That Miika Pekkala strat)?
@@tim.martin Good observation bad guess :) it's a little cruise control (cc) on the 1st controller - to help me keep full forward speed while turning. Yeah you can either cc at power on or by pressing L,R & start simultaneously.
@@tonynubares6880 maybe I'm Mr 2.3 for now but I'm a TASer not a TAS so no ;)
You sound like the moon from The Mighty Boosh
I could see a newcomer getting the 21. Not being acquainted with the controls of the game my allow learning the complicated style to be easier.
Hell if I had an n64 and two controllers (and the game of course), I would give it a shot.
Great vid, goose. I like the implementation of the runs into the “news” type video.
Yeah this is ENTIRELY bias due to having learned a different control style. People just haven't properly put the time in and thus say it's not gonna happen.
@@logansmith2703 and then the people that only play on 2.3 and speedrun other games gets a 20.
Shit I'd give it a go if I had a second controller! Wonder if the PAL version is viable..
I played quite a bit of perfect dark but pretty much no goldeneye, and i have goldeneye available with 2 controllers. Not sure I have the heart to grind it out like this though haha
I could see somebody making a custom controller that uses 2 controller ports just for his game. Actually kinda surprised nobody has done it yet. Something like a PlayStation or xbox controller but for this game.
Your passion for GoldenEye and the entire speed running community inspired me to create an entire body of video work around my favorite 90s movie: Waterworld!

Its called "autism".
@@karlandersson4350 twat
@@karlandersson4350 I'd have to disagree, being Autistic myself, I'd have to say that I'd personally never attempt this, don't have the motivation to grind away, let alone speedrun this game.
@@totallyunoriginalusername Not all autists can speedrun ofcourse. :) But im willing to bet quite high numbers on a very large majority of good speedrunners goes a long way in on the spectrum.
The Goldeneye community is unlike any other. One of the most OG communities out there for any game. And it's no stretch to say it's bc Goldeneye is indeed one of the greatest games of all time, tried and true, it's really only the graphics and N64 hardware that contribute to any aging of the game, because otherwise it's really truly a damn solid game
Passing away people in Goldeneye is fun.
I’m not a speedrunner, my brain and fingers don’t work quick enough, and I really do not have the patience to sit through the same game for hour after hour trying to squeeze out a better time.
But, I am hooked on these videos. It is truly incredible the work that goes in to finding these tricks - “you have to play surface first in your session to ensure that it loads the sky palette so that the computers in Fridgate don’t load”. Wow!
The dedication and in depth analysis from within the community is amazing and inspiring!
Same here! I rarely play games anymore tbh, but these speedrunning vidyas are really interesting
Yes and let me tell you, what these speedrunners are doing with that N64 controller and those archaic controls, it's almost mind blowing. If you've never tried , just for fun, say Archives Agent 16, good luck lol you will find out very quickly just how refined the top players' skills are with this difficult device, the N64 controller
Runway 21 recently got tied as well - absolute madness!
What’s the fastest ad read, that fulfills the brief?
Has anyone ever done a speed run on that?
I love how this title catches your eye way more than "Capitals EVERYWHERE! Fifty Exclamation Points!!!" it's like reverse-click bait it's awesome
I've never understood why all the computers in this game explode like bombs when you shoot them. lol. I hope we see a Frigate Agent 21 some day!
I hate it when I lose my wallet during a speedrun, I'm so glad there's an easier way to keep my wallet AND speedrun at the same time. Thank you rwhitegoose, very cool!
The real hero here is rwhitegoose for putting a label over the ad placement.

Will a Ridge Wallet prevent spaghetti from falling out of my pockets?
Only if you keep it in the wallet. Ridge ™ makes no guarantee about unsecured spaghetti
Who actually has their wallet in their pocket while speedrunning in their own home though?
Ad is pretty ridiculous.
@@ReceptiveRaptor You shoulda had a Ridge Wallet™ because it seems your sense of humor might have fallen out with the spaghetti

🍻 Cheers mate. 21 gonna be more fucked :)
Usually I skip the ridge ads but I enjoy your videos so much I sat through it
Truly remarkable
The speedrunning community imo tends to just write off tactics because they don't want to risk "wasting time". I guarantee if more people had tried to do this, and put in the time we would've gotten severl people tying the record.
Efficient grinding is key though. If you waste a lot of time on obscure techniques your chances lower drastically, hence this being an underdog story.
You don't see the countless hours that go into strategies that actually don't work or are unviable.
There are some strategies that are simply too difficult to ever take seriously, though. The amount of precision required to do carpetless consistently is so absurd that I don't think any human will ever attempt it in real speedruns, for example.
I'm not saying this is what happened with this particular strategy for Frigate, but I think it's unfair to say speedrunners write stuff off to not waste time. It's usually that they know they can still save time using conventional methods and then forget about the new technique and it ends up not being used. Since Karl got a 22 using a more conventional control style, it's more likely for players going for 22 to stick to what they know trying for the 22 and forget that 2.3 is even a thing.
As Goose said, 2.3 would be good for newcomers to try and get a 22, and it's usually the newcomers that find techniques like this that are lost with time and say "why is nobody doing this?" without concrete idea of the history behind it.
You're the real MVP for marking the ad as a segment
Another great video. Well done Ted. Great stuff.
I like seeing you experiment with new video techniques Goose. Keep it up MY FRIEND
That control scheme is the same as the default for 007: Agent under Fire, was a strange game to play at first but allowed for some very interesting movement once you got used to it.

Ryan, can you please make a video explaining every control style in Goldeneye & PD? It'd be awesome to have details on how you hold the controllers, & the different methods people use to tape them together, things like that.
I know you've touched on this before, but I think many people would love to see an in-depth explanation of how they all work, with video showing the hands of someone playing next to the video feed of them playing with these styles (particularly with crazy taped-up rigs!).
Thanks man!

"Even I was starting to think it was just a meme!"
That TAS demonstration of a 20s run at the end ( 15:56 ) seems to remove the skybox, presumably to reduce lag; is 20s actually possible without doing that? Was he just reducing lag to make sure his emulator kept pace with console?
The visual glitches come from the fact that it is on emulator. The lack of lag is also because it is on emulator.
Edit: Turns out no known emulator can emulate n64 lag. False memories are a bitch lol.
@@NvrPhazed if there's an emulator that's accurate for Goldeneye and that you can practically TAS with then I would like to know about it lol. I have kinda corrected the green sea since that 20 TAS thanks to a tip someone left on one of my vids though :)

No hostages were passed away in the making of this video.

There was a reason this game was always rated #1 on the charts in Nintendo Power's monthly magazine.

I got Frigate agent 0:19, it's pretty easy if you engage the clutch early and start the run in 2nd gear.
That's insane.
First, this legend had to grind to learn 2.3. THEN he had to learn to use it to complete this mission. What a BEAST!

Okay, I've seen ads and segments in many youtube videos for Ridge wallet. I laughed out loud at Goose's wallet falling out of his pocket while gaming and I don't know why but I might get the wallet now.

I remember another GE obscure strategy from Karl:
Surface 2 00A two nade strat, used by Boss for 1:24. Only he was he able to complete a decent run with that strat.
Having run this level waaay tioo many times I can tell you that At about 7 minutes in this video I started laughing uncontrollably. Thank you sir!
Thats a sick start because it's such a yolo shot lol
Interesting that 2.3 is actually the standard layout for modern console shooters
Do people ever do "duet" runs of this game where they are on 2.4/whatever and there's a different person with each controller
This has been done to set good times (I think on Depot), or even a WR when the use of 2.X was still rarely used. Caused some controversy as to whether a record would be accepted. I believe the community decided it would since there'd be no way to referee whether the run was solo anyways....this was in the late 00s before things like footage of players using the controller to referee inputs was a thing in gaming...
@Why Not I didn't mean like people faking 1player runs, I meant Is this a category people run.
Is it required to use original Nintendo Joysticks to participate in professional speedrunning? cause they're getting scarce in the original configuration. I prefer to use a more modern and better tuned third party alternatives, same one stick and button layout, but with better and more durable materials, comparable to the used in modern controllers, and even have a wireless one for my weekend retro gaming sessions.
you can look here for all the rules for speedrunning Goldeneye : rankings.the-elite.net/proof
Very cool
IT FINALLY HAPPENED
TRULY...remarkable
This could become a stage that’s like runway 00. The strategy is so different than every other level so that lower ranked players can achieve
Would the time lost to pause straight after the cutscene, to change to a more suitable control scheme, completely negate the time saved releasing the first hostage with this method?
sponsored segment? that feels almost professional
Passing away
what a run
good shit
this video wasnt in my favorites feed like it was supposed to be when it released or i woulda clicked, lucky i saw it when on the channel by happenchance
For some reason Wouter Jansen appearing at normal res in front of incredibly blocky low-res N64 footage startled me.
What a champ
Also worth noting that if you were able to not only free the hostage in the cutscene but to also try to kill the other guards in the room, then they would not be in the way during the run back to the boat. Probably obvious but yeah.
Goose_bumps in the end
The Karl strikes hard
congratulations! on the non TNS 22
What are the odds of this new strategy? Karl's run had about a 1/41 chance of both hostages choosing the right escape point, but does the bridge hostage have a preference for a particular escape point? Is there any other point where the bridge hostage can still escape in a 21 or 22 seconds run?
this is the great thing about 2.3 is it pretty much achieves that ~ 1 in 6 odds for each hostage, because the 2nd hostage has a completely clear route out (unlike in the 1.2 strat). There are a few technical 'hoops' to jump through to make sure that you don't damage these chances though (i.e. you can't be too noisy)
Good!
totally forgot about the "pass away" thing
I was looking forward to "My Friends... IT JUST... KEEPS... HAPPENING"
lol
I need to get to that passed away drop
Hey Goose! I haven't played Goldeneye since I was a kid and I've never attempted a speedrun, so please excuse my ignorance here. Just wondering, if 21s is theoretically possible with the exact same strategy using 2.3 up until the bug throw. Then would it be possible to pause immediately as the level starts to swap over to 1.2 to get a much easier 22s than trying to play 2.3 for half the stage? Love your speedlore on Goldeneye though. For a game that I don't even play to keep me so entertained for hours on end, you're obviously doing something right!
Fair question...the time spent getting to the pause menu (between pressing START and being in the menu) is timed, so doing it twice would be too much of a waste of time. The bug throw allows the switch back to 1.2, since you have to pause to get the bug from your inventory anyway. Most levels don't have such an opportunity to pause and switch out of 2.x, so it's actually pretty lucky that half of this level can be played in 1.2.
