While the information that Dr. Nadine Burke Harris offered was informative I found it very disturbing that when she discussed the in-school suspension there were two teen-aged African American boys and not their counterpats as if other races aren't sent to in-school suspension. Also, an African American girl was coming from time out. All the other pictures in the video showed other races reading, working on the computer, working with their teacher, smiling, etc. This is a time when education has shown its ugly head of inequality and racial biases more openly. Let's not allow it to continue to grow by showing videos that are portraying African-American students as the "bad guys".

As a educational consultant that teachers about the impact of implicit bias on school discipline, I understand your position. But, seeing one scene of one day in a school can not be seen as representative of the school as a whole. It's anecdotal until we can see the data on school discipline.

Good catch on the boys. Honestly, I was so excited to see a Black male educator facilitating the restorative practice (not to mention the portraits of Black excellence behind Dr. Harris) that I didn't notice the implicit correlation between ISS and the Black boys. May our radar for Black excellence be louder than our Black-crime detector.
As for the girl - she was coming back from a self-initiated break (not a time-out), and is therefore the "good example." Given the burdens our society places on Black women, I think we could all benefit from seeing a Black woman leading the way in self-care.
