- Today we dive into English jazz-funk-pop rock band LEVEL 42. "Something About You" was the lead single off the band's famous WORLD MACHINE album released in 1985.

I think LEVEL 42s sound could easily fit in with the music of today, Mark King is considered one of the best Base players ever. You are right to compare Level 42 with Simply Red they made timeless music in my oppinion. My fav Level 42 song is HOT WATER, Also Simply Red's Holding Back the Years is a classic. Keep up the great work Lads.

I was a disc jockey on Riviera 104 ("Broadcasting in English to the C'ôte d'Azure - from San Remo to St Tropez") when Level 42 came out with this song - we ALL loved to play it!
More mature new wave. Perfect melody, vocals, lyrics and exceptional harmonies. All the reasons it’s a classic that endures. ❤️
Yes, one of my top 10 favourite pop songs of the 80s. I generally like basslines, upon today, that might be a reason. I also like the video, because it fits the lyrics well.
A was really into Level 42, I have a few of their albums and saw them live back in the day. They always had a great production quality to them. As far back as "Love Games" and "Love Meeting Love". This was due to having a really great mix of band members. Really good versatile musicians. Guitar, drums and keyboard roles could have been taken by 3 different band members ! Mark King being a drummer who switched to bass guitar for example. Wally Badarou was the mastermind though imo, writing and co-producing. 11 albums they put out in total and all quite memorable.

Mark King played Drums, Bass & Guitar. Mike Lindup played Drums, Percussion & Keyboards. Boon Gould played Bass, Saxophone & Guitar. Phil Gould played Piano, Drums & Percussion. Boon actually performed the sax solo on 'Love Meeting Love' and Phil played the glockenspiel solo on 'Starchild.' Their collective high level of musicianship was pretty unique in the eighties!

Level 42 is one of my favorite bands from the 80’s. Had a string of great albums that mix rock/pop/jazz with Mark’s fantastic bass driving each song.

Yes! Finally found the S/Tier! Huge Level 42 fan. I had World Machine and Lessons In Love LPs and played them to death. Then I had a roommate who had lived in the UK and had all the albums I never knew existed! They are so huge in Europe and basically considered a one-hit wonder here. So many great EU bands like that: a-ha, Jamiroquai, etc.

A brilliant band from a brilliant time. The woman with the white cup is the gorgeous Cherie Lunghi, a British actress who every red blooded British male was in love with in the 80s. She played a brilliant part (Guinevere) in the 1981 film by John Boorman called Excalibur about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

You hit it when you said it's funky, thats the thing that hit me first time I heard this, hmmpf, and then when I heard World Machine, ,..ohh man, and I had already been exposed to The Brothers Johnson(who are so badass), Larry Graham, in the 70's,..Parliament Funkadelics, this group just had funk written all over them,..do keep going, Godspeed, Peace ✌
World Machine is a masterpiece according to me. I have seen them live many times, starting in 1985, but if I have to pick something, it must be when I saw them in Stockholm. And they played "To be with you again". I have tried for many years, to try to just play the bass-line. He played and sang it live. Totally insane. Cheers from southern Italy!

Please look up another UK band called Flock Of Seagulls, especially "Space Age Love Song" , "I Ran" , "Its not Me Talking" and "Telecommunication" They were a great feel good band from the same era as Level 42.

This version seemed a lot longer than the original version & i know its not 12 inch because of the time frame & the fact every 12 In i bought were remixed like crazy...
Oddly enough i was looking into the " World Machine " album as , again , another link popped up but this i understand as i more often than not look at things to do with Level 42 as I've been a huge fan since they started out & on this link saw a gentleman do a great bass guitar cover of " I Sleep On My Heart " also from the " World Machine " album...
Along with listening to " Dream Crazy " " I Sleep On My Heart & i'd say my favourite song was "Coup d'état " as it harks back to the fact that they've made songs that spoke of politics & not trusting our Governments & the atrocities that can happen on any given day along with pop song's...
Sure they made great popular song's but they also tried to put a song thats talks about the world we live & that those in Power arent interested on no one except for their own expensive needs & theyd always slip one of those song's on an album if they felt it was good enough to be aloud on that album...
To the gentleman on the right & with regards to Mark singing & playing bass guitar & if he doesnt this he might see it in the comments...
When Mark King Recorded " Lessons In Love " he did the singing part separate from him recording the bass line & it wasnt until he tried to play & sing at the same time he found he was struggling to play the bass guitar while singing " Lessons In Love " & he admitted thst he had to put in quite some practice to play both at the same time as Mark didnt think hed had problems with that & trying to sing & play bass guitar can see thr best of them being caught by something he thought hed hsve to problems playing alas he did & its slightly comforting knowing that even the best can make mistakes or taken his gift for granted when playing bass while singing...

I absolutely hate that video, totally undersells the song which i think for the 80's was smoothly produced. It's pure nostalgia for me because it takes me back to a grumpy 14 year old..., but it's beautifully crafted. I would say though Lessons in Love is a better tune of theirs.

I'm sorry my friend. Simply Red cannot measure up to Level 42. Level 42 has several hit songs and number ones . Check out the first two albums and their song " Leaving me now". " Lessons in love". So on and so on.
