How To Rebuild A Differential - Setup Basics, And What You Don't Want To See

  • Today we're rebuilding a Ford differential under a lifted Jeep. Yeah, I don't know why, either. But the good news is that a lot of this same information applies to axles of all different types. The important concept to grasp is really what things should and shouldn't feel like. So follow along and learn what I look for when I'm assessing and rebuilding a differential.

    Your timing of videos is so funny to my car troubles I must share this story a month or so ago my 87 Ram chargers drive line exploded while driving down the road. I thought it was the drive line come to find out the rear end came apart. trying to Find gears and things to Rebuild the rear end I Found a used rear axle and put it in after Driving it The Used rear end was howling and making a lot of noise so I bought a new set of gears from rigid axles and Wanted to put in new gears Myself Never doing it before I wasn't a 100% confident doing it and the gears were quite expensive I called many shops and I had a lot of shops that would not do it they weren't trained and did know how to Install gears. I finally found a shop that could do it and they installed the gears and then charged me full rate and gave me the truck back my speedometer was off and the truck drove funny come to find out the gear set that was delivered was wrong the people that installed it knew it was wrong when they installed it but because I supplied them they said that was my fault instead of calling me and asking they even knew The reason it was there was for noisy gears and that I did not want to change the ratio. So then I had to order a new set of gears the correct set and have them installed. my $2000 toy 87 Ram charger just cost me $2300 for the rear end I should of done it myself

      I was too, for a long time. But eventually was in a situation where I just kind of had to, and after making a couple mild tactical errors, I got the hang of it.

    Geezo! I missed this video the other day somehow! I blame it on my stupid finger. I rebuilt my Dana 60 with a Richmond kit. The supplied yellow goop would not produce a good reading. I used white spray paint, and it worked great! I'm amazed that neither of you spurted any blood! Good job you guys! And remember... if you can't laugh at yourself, I will do it for you! The gear surface isn't rusted. That is spalling. It is a form of gear wear where the surface separates from the rest of the parent material due to fatigue.

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  Před 7 měsíci

      Why is it only showing that wear in areas that do not make contact between the two gears? And why are those areas full of rust staining? The pattern looks just like several rusty gear sets that I found pictures of online - gear sets that, like this one, have sat around unused for years and have seen way more moisture than they ever should have. I don’t know what the mechanical process for preserving the areas that make contact is, but I suspect the forces acting on the gear oil film between the two gears could explain it. I don’t know how a gear could fatigue in an area that - at least when cold - makes no contact with its mated gear.

    Or if you don't have a fancy dial indicator get you some shoe Polish and look for a cigar shaped imprint on the gears that's the Old School way for some of us who do it in the driveway who Don't have Fancy dial indicators from Harbor for

    • @lordbyron8270
      @lordbyron8270 Před 7 měsíci +3

      The angle is likely why the double cardan joint decided to exit stage right. (I'm the owner of Jeep. It also needs the front diff re-done(re-geared+lunchbox), so I'll be convincing him to help me with that one as well. haha.)

  • @Tekjive
    @Tekjive Před 19 dny

    What causes the backlash-like clunk from both axles (sometimes solo, sometimes both) but it’s not from incorrect backlash? Driving me nuts …only happens when accelerating or decelerating / weight shift on axles, and everything looks damn near new. Can Incorrect preload with adjustables on carrier cause that? Chrysler 8.25 in 07 Nitro R/T

    • @DeadDodgeGarage
      @DeadDodgeGarage  Před 18 dny +1

      I’ve experienced that myself, and unfortunately I really can’t say. I can tell you that the Chrysler 8.25 and 9.25 have relatively sloppy pinion setup specs compared to other axles, so perhaps that accounts for some of it. Those rear ends are also very hard on axle shaft / wheel bearings for some reason. Make sure your u-joints and transfer case (assuming this is 4x4) are in good shape and that’s about all you can do.
