    Hello everyone!
    During the approach, I meant to say that the aircraft felt “right-wing” heavy haha. Having watched the video back, it would appear that with all 4 throttles in the same position, the number 3 and 4 engines do actually produce slightly less thrust. The automatic flight engineer accounts for this (you can see that the throttles are staggered during the takeoff), whereas I did not. The imbalance still felt rather exaggerated though, given the relatively minor difference in power settings on each side.
    I hope that clarifies things a little : )

      Agreed Davide. It’s nice to have something a little more plausible, although I don’t mind a tablet, so long as it can be hidden away. Red Wing definitely have a few nice ideas with their Connie and it’s great to see how far the aircraft has come : )

The museum looks like it would be great to visit, although a little bit out of my way currently ha.

    I really like this product. Keep in mind that every increase in fidelity, there is a performance cost involved. No free lunch so to speak. So keeping some of the graphics a little on the low-fi side is not an issue, rather a bonus. I want smooth, flowing graphics, not choppy, stuttering frames. PMDG are the masters at knowing what to spend their performance on and what to lower. Unless you are running a brand new massive powerhouse PC, you will appreciate the efforts.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před rokem

      Hi VH,
      Great, very happy to hear that you're enjoying the Connie! I agree that ordinarily, there does have to be some sort of trade-off between fidelity and visual modelling. PMDG do indeed tend to strike a good balance and there are a few other devs, also very good at pulling off this trick. Generally speaking, I find the L1049's modelling to be acceptable, I do think cockpit texturing could be improved in certain areas though (it doesn't need to be high res, just a little more photo-realistic). The main area of the Connie in which I would still like to see improvements, is actually the systems / engine modelling; currently I feel that both could use further refinement given the price point.
      I am very happy to see the amount of work Red Wing have continued to put into the Connie though and they deserve a lot of praise for that!
      Cheers and all the best : )

  • @publius1252
    @publius1252 Před rokem +3

    Sadly, every time I fly this aircraft I appreciate the PMDG DC6 more and more. It is head a shoulders above this product, notwithstanding the efforts the developers have made and continue to make.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před rokem +1

      Yep, very much agree Publius. It's great to see how much work Red Wing have continued to put into the Connie (many developers would simply not have bothered), but the aircraft still has a very long way to go, until it's on a par with the DC6 (and it ought to be, given that it's basically the same price). At this stage, I think Red Wing have a nice enough product, but they're rather over-charging for what it currently is I feel.
      All the best : )

    Thanks for another great review. The Connie (from Calclassic) is the plane i flew most in FSX, loved the 749 mostly but also the 1046 and 1649, as well as the EWR version were really awesome. This one sadly is not where i can drop 50 on it and be satisfied. But given time i hope i can fly it with good engine modeling and the super sexy MATS skin as well as those beautifull classic airlines skins.
    To me the Connie's looks are a million times more sexy then the square DC 6.

      I wasn't a huge fan of the real Connie's looks previously, but I have to say that the aircraft has really grown on me haha - undoubtedly a more beautiful piece of design than the DC6, though currently (as you allude to) there is no competition between the two products in MSFS. Hopefully Red Wing will eventually get the L1049 to where it needs to be and kudos to them for continuing to put a tonne of work into their product.
      Thanks : )

    The smoke effects are great! The exhaust flame is still a bit cartoony. The engineer startup; it's pretty cool they count the prop blades instead of the engines instantly coming to life. The engines look way better, but what the heck was that where you were running 2,700 RPM taxiing onto the runway? Power settings in general seemed very off. Climbing out at 700fpm at 190 on 22" ?! Gauge bugs?

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před rokem +3

      Hi Jacob,
      Yes, the smoke effects are indeed some of the best I've seen and what a difference it makes to the start-up (PMDG take note! haha). The exhaust flames are certainly a bit cartoony, but at least Red Wing went to the trouble of modelling them (I feel like most devs would not have done so). The engineer counting the prop blades through was nice; the only thing I would say there - the count bears no resemblance to the blade movement itself unfortunately (and actually, many of the callouts don't really match the systems configuration etc).
      The engine modelling seemed to be way off in general yes. I'm not all that familiar with the Connie, but the power settings and rpm's seemed to be all over the shop throughout the flight and generally power settings seemed to be far too low. It could be the gauges I suppose, but I feel like the engine modelling in general is lacklustre.
      Still plenty for Red Wing to be working on I would say, but it is really nice to see how much work has been put into the product since release (it's almost a whole new addon in some respects).
      Cheers and all the best! : )

    • @myZisfantastic
      @myZisfantastic Před rokem +1

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Yes it's a shame they still didn't corrected the engine RPM behaviour. Another thing I noticed is the size of the instruments on the flight engineer panel. They are way to small and the panel feels empty as in the real one it feels crowded.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před rokem

    Great review and a lovely plane. I still can't decide what to think of weathered \aged cockpits. The passenger area and externals are pristine, which suggests we're flying it back in its heyday, so the cockpit should be in a good state too. I know people enjoy the aged look but I wish we had the choice. E.g. fly an old restored one today or a pristine one back in time. Maybe I'm just too picky 😃

      Hi Doc,
      Hehe, I know weathering always tends to divide opinion, personally I prefer a cockpit with a bit of "character" though ; )
      You're correct, that there is perhaps a bit of a mismatch between the cabin and the cockpit on the Red Wing Connie, but that isn't necessarily unrealistic. Aesthetically at least, the cabin does tend to get a bit more TLC than the cockpit and you might be surprised as to how quickly the cockpit gets "beaten up" on a real aircraft. The cabin does also get an overhaul from time to time, whereas generally the cockpit does not.
      As with all of these sorts of things, the optimum solution would be to give the user a choice. Most devs don't seem to do that, but at least there are quite a few cockpit texturing options, available for the bigger addons (PMDG 737 etc), over on Flightsim.to.
      Cheers and all the best! : )

      Hi Ceejay,
      Thank you very much, you're most welcome!
      I'm not expert on these things, but I believe you're absolutely right. Certainly I try and avoid any such behaviours in the DC6. The Red Wing Connie seems to require very low power settings at the best of times though, so it was very hard to decelerate without coming back on the power. It was partly my own fault mind you, as I exacerbated the situation by flying an approach designed for your average modern jet (trying to "get down and slow down", was always going to end poorly in the Connie I guess). I hope that clarifies things.
      I very much agree with you on the textures. The Red Wing Connie isn't a bad product per se, but obviously it is competing with the DC6 *and* at a similar price point. There's still a fairly big divide between the two products in terms of what they're offering.

    I have found that the automated power settings are a little bit bugged for me. Sometimes the cruise settings aren't quite synced, sometimes the flight engineer spends several minutes trying to sync the RPMs and manifold pressures, if he succeeds in doing so at all. I don't quite feel that the flight engineer is up to snuff, I find I get more fuel efficiency and better cruising by managing that myself. Otherwise, I have no complaints. Very commendable aircraft in-sim, very pleasing to fly.

    I splashed out 6K for a liquid cooled PC with a 3090 in it and of all my purchases over the last decade or so it's the one I'm most pleased with. I can populate my airfields with sim objects (planes from the list). At KMCI (kansas city) I have 7 PMDG DC-6s, 9 DC-3s, 4 Beech-18s and a whole lot of Cessna 190s. All my settings are pretty much maxed out and I'm still getting over 70 fps. I fly exclusively in the 1950s (where they never heard the word Garmin). The Connie would look great there and I'm seriously considering buying it.
    I've over written every interstate in Kansas and reduced most of the cities to 1950s levels. I still can't get rid of those damn windmills though.

      The Connie is certainly a magnificent piece of design. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Red Wing’s depiction of the aircraft (more than anything, I feel the product is overpriced for what it is) but, to each his own and I’m really happy you’re enjoying the addon!

    Once again, a great review! I know this is a review from 1 year ago but I've been looking to buy this plane for some time and if they've improved it to the extent I've seen in this review, I think it's now worth considering the purchase. However, I must ask about the Blue colored flames, (for lack of a better description), coming from the engines while in METO power/cruise configuration.
    I know the Connie would blow flames under full power and I expected that, but what is the blue color supposed to be replicating? As a long time 'FSXer', one of my favorite planes was the Constellation. This MSFS version may have gotten reasonably close to the FSX version but I'm not so sure that it's quite there yet.
    Thanks again,
    Rich

      Hello Rich,
      Cheers, I’m really glad you enjoyed the video!
      Haha, you certainly aren’t the first person to point out the flames in the cruise. I’m no Connie expert but, it does seems as though flames in the cruise are a bit out of place. I presume the dev is trying to replicate heat-haze etc (which perhaps did have a somewhat bluish hue to it - I have no idea), but I think the effect is overdone, whatever it is trying to be.
      Whilst the Red Wing Constellation has come a long way, it’s still nowhere close to its A2A counterpart, or the PMDG DC6 for that matter. So, be to honest, it’s a difficult product for me to recommend overall (especially given the price). That being said, I tried to give a good impression of what the addon does have to offer, so if you can live with the RW Connie’s shortfalls, you may still enjoy it.
      I hope that helps a little? All the best : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Yes, thank you! It certainly does help me out because I've still been considering it. Shortly after I watched your video, I gave it all some additional thought but opted for the C160 instead. Even though I'm sure the C160 is open for improvements, I've never owned any variation of it in FSX, (that I can remember) and the price of the C160 was much more palatable.
      I found the AZURPOLY C160 plane to be worth the low price at the very least. But I think I chose not to go for the Connie just yet is because of my memory of the A2A Connie for FSX that I flew quite often.
      Even though I knew better, I was concerned that I would have subconsciously expected something from the Red Wing L049 that it couldn't deliver because I still have the memory of the A2A version. Therefore, I decided to wait a little longer to see how the Red Wing version progresses. If Red Wing doesn't implement some sort of 'shut-off' option, my guess is that it wouldn't be too difficult to scratch those blue-flame effects from the plane's program manually.
      PS The red flames are fine and there may be some blue-flame visible on the real thing if the pilot is pushing the superchargers (and viewed under close inspection at just the right time of day & conditions), but it's a bit much.😉

    Comparing it to PMDG's DC6 for MSFS and A2A's Constellation for FSX, a lot of work needs to be done on the engine simulation. The manifold pressure should be in the green for most of the power settings on the charts, but it sits around 20" when trying to set the correct torque pressure and fuel mixture. Opening cowl flaps in the air causes CHT to increase, oil temperature shoots up when the cooler flaps are closed and causes fires immediately after landing, switching the carb air to hot makes it colder, and lowering propellor RPM causes torque pressure to decrease instead of increase.

    Glad you took anotehr look. I was about to pester you about this myself ;) I have a few questions.....
    1. The display for the Zero Reader instrument, the right gauge of the 2 things top-center of the panel, so obviously of prime importance, still doesn't work. But OTOH, if you have a GTN 750 mod, that takes its place so for the nonce, no harm, no foul. Still, the Zero Reader was quite obviously paramount on the panel so its continued lack of functionality is annoying. Why did you not mention this?
    2. HOW did you get above 10K without manual intervention on the FE panel, especially with the mixtures? For me (and everybody I've asked about this) the high blower setting simply doesn't work at all without manually leaning the mixture out a lot on the FE panel. Yet you didn't do that in this video So, how?
    3. You should have mentioned that the Connie's throttle axes are jacked up. If you set them to 0-100 as for EVERY OTHER plane, you get -100 to +100. So, you must set your controller levers to the axes that just say "Throttle X", with in EVERY OTHER PLANE gives you -100 to +100, but in the Connie gives you 0-100.

    • @IntotheBlueSimulations
      @IntotheBlueSimulations  Před rokem +1

      Haha, cheers Bullet, sounds like I beat you to it then ; )
      1. I was somewhat aware that the Zero Reader is not currently modelled, but since I know little-to-nothing about how it should work, I didn't have much of any value to contribute on the subject haha (those in the know, should be able to see for themselves, to what degree it has been modelled).
      2. I saw others making mention of supercharger issues. I left the AI flight engineer running the show, all the way through from takeoff, to short-final. I was bracing myself for issues (given what I had read), but everything worked absolutely fine for me (no troubles climbing whatsoever). I don't know what the difference could be, perhaps the Connie was updated recently with a fix?
      3. I didn't notice that issue with the throttles myself. As it happens, I already have my hardware bound to the "Throttle X" axis, so I didn't see any of the behaviour you describe (just a bit of a fluke on that one I suppose).
      I hope that clarifies things a little. All the best! : )

      @@IntotheBlueSimulations Thanks for your reply. As with the Twin Beech, our experiences differ (although, since the update, the Twin Beech is working pretty good for me now).
      Anyway, as to the zero reader, it's from before even my ancient youth but I have scoured the web to learn about it. There's (was?) a manual for the instrument on Ebay and one of the pics of a random page answered most of my questions about how it worked.
      Basically, the currently inop gauge on the right was a CRT screen that gave horizontal and vertical guidance similar to a modern-ish CDI . It had a fixed + of dashed lines n the middle that was the direction your nose was pointing relative to where it should be, which was a solid + that moved. So, if the solid + was above and left of the dashed +, you needed to go up and left until the dashed and solid +s merged in the center of the gauge. But the whole thing was tied into some sort of primitive FMS and was rather more flexible than a CDI, as in giving vertical guidance (taken from the AP setting, seemingly) during cruise, and able to take lateral guidance from NDB|s as well as VORs and backcourse localizers. The rotary switch on the left was for setting that up. Or so my very limited understanding leads me to believe.

      Hi JM,
      From memory, the addon allows one to make use of the PMS GTN’s (either the payware, or freeware versions). I haven’t tried the PMS GTN’s in a long time myself but, the manual would seem suggest that one can import a sim flight plan: pms50.com/fs2020/gtn750/documentation.pdf#page21
      Probably worth having a read of that and / or getting in touch with the dev to make absolutely sure, ahead of purchasing the product.
      I hope that helps a little. All the best : )

      I had another viewer with the same issue: Are you using the sim’s “Legacy” flight model by any chance? You need to be using the “Modern” flight model setting with the Connie (that solved the issue for the other chap).

      Hi Walter,
      Well obviously for this flight, Australian accents would have been ideal, but the addon only comes with the one set of crew voices (which seem to be a mix of European accents, as best I can tell) and the livery was actually a 3rd party repaint - so not even native to the product.

      With regards to the camera "rolling around", I presume you're referring to the head movement? That's a real shame, as I certainly don't want to make my viewers, let alone my channel members, feel sick! XD
      I'm afraid I couldn't do without TrackIR (the hardware responsible for the camera movement), apologies if it's not very comfortable for you as a viewer and I do appreciate the feedback.

      Sorry to hear that, Brian. It’s fair to say that the Connie is a bit of a mediocre addon overall. That’s strange, re the engines though; I haven’t experienced any such problems myself, but then it has been a while since I last flew the aircraft (so a bug may have crept in). It’s a bit peculiar if the same thing is always happening on the runway. I’m afraid I’m not really sure what could be causing that. Perhaps it’s worth getting in touch with Red Wing. . .

      Indeed Attila. Sadly, there are still quite a few areas left wanting on the Red Wing Connie. It’s kind of hard to recommend the product, when Red Wing are asking similar sorts of money to the PMDG DC6.

    Heya! Thought I'd leave a comment here. Based upon this video I went ahead and bought the Connie. Well, if you buy it through MSFS Marketplace, you may end up paying for it twice due to the deceptive description of your purchase... off topic. Anyway, this has got to be the worst plane I've ever added to any flight simulator and I've been at it since 1992. The cockpit artwork is almost cartoonish and is jumpy - no smooth gages or dials (and my framerates are over 45). The control settings are way too sensitive no matter what you do inside the simulator... this is the sportscar of airliners. Just touching the trim wheel will result in going from a 500 fpm climb top a 2000 fpm dive. And, let's engage the "auto pilot"... You will find yourself in an instant straight down dive that is unrecoverable (kinda like the real thing I guess). I'm not saying I blame Into the Blue Simulations for saying it's worth the money... I'm blaming Red Wing Simulations for fielding a total piece of garbage and hoping that enough gullible people (yeah... like me) who loved the Connie in past sims would take a chance and buy it. Oh... and let's try to contact the company. Nope! It's Discord time and they just don't answer difficult questions. So after spending all day with the product and getting more and more frustrated as I find one broken thing after another and no way to contact the company or get a refund, I'm posting my findings. Again, this is no reflection on Into the Blue Simulations. But please do yourselves a favor and pass on this one.

      Hello Jim,
      Thanks very much for leaving your feedback for others!
      If you purchased the aircraft based on my review, then I sincerely have to apologise somewhat - perhaps I did a poor job of articulating myself. . . Graphically I think I pointed out the issues that you mention, I didn't experience the same flight control / autopilot behaviours myself though (and unfortunately I can only comment on that which I experience at the time). I always try to point out any faults as I find them and I think I brought up quite a few during the video.
      Again, perhaps I didn't make the point as clearly as I felt I had, but I actually think that the product is currently overpriced (I tend not to comment specifically on whether or not something is "worth" the cost, as that varies hugely from individual to individual). As I believe I mentioned in the video, the Connie still has a long way to go before it's on a par with the DC6 and given that Red Wing are charging similar sorts of money, the addon really ought to be! I do think it's great to see how much work Red Wing have continued to put into the product (many developers would have released the addon and then called it a day), but there is still much that needs to be done.
      I do hope that Red Wing got back to you in the end and indeed that they continue to work on the Connie, to a point where you're happy with your purchase.
      Thanks and apologies once again. All the best!

      Nor was I Tom. I originally made mention of it, but then I figured if Red Wing are an international development team, far be it for me to call their accents a “fault” with the product haha. That said, I think hiring voice actors is probably the better way to go, rather than trying to do things “in-house” and having a harmonious bunch of accents tends to make more sense - the current crew audio is a little bit jarring.
      Cheers, all the best!
