Are IBJJF Tournaments Tougher than Other Competitions in BJJ ?

  • Today's question from a Blue Belt who's competed, and done well, in several tournaments and is now gearing up to do his very first IBJJF competition. His question is whether or not the IBJJF competition is tougher than other Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitions.
    In the video I'll share some ideas on the IBJJF, why you shouldn't get spooked about any competition and also how 1 of my BJJ students struggled in a local tournament and later on went and won the Pan Ams in his weight class and age division.
    So, if you're getting ready for your 1st IBJJF competition then I hope the video is useful!

    As an older grappler (age 50) I've found that IBJJF offers the best chance of competing in my age and weight bracket. Smaller tourneys with fewer competitors tend to start lumping folks together, giving broader age and weight ranges.

    I do best in any competition (not even BJJ) when I just try and have fun and relax and tell my self if you loose it's no big deal and just treat it like a local race or local BJJ comp. Of course I will fight harder/drive more aggressive to win but if your afraid to loose position your screwed , go ahead and go for what ever is available and don't get tied up in thinking if you try a sub that you may loose position and not be able to return to a good position..
    After I started thinking this way I did so so much better .

      Grappling Industries does a great job of keeping track of time and rotating through matches efficiently, rather than making some guys wait 30 minutes between matches while others have matches 5 minutes apart like I've experienced at some local competitions. I just feel like with them only having three experience divisions, it can get a little rough. I competed as a blue belt against experienced purple belts because we were all in the "intermediate" division. And it puts brown belts in a tough spot because obviously they aren't intermediate, but IMO a first year brown belt shouldn't be in the same division as someone who's been a black belt for a few years, generally speaking.

      @@jasonschenck1688 That's good to hear and I think in most cases, that is a good thing. The X-factor is when people with extensive wrestling history come into the mix, especially at the white and blue belt level. I watched one competition where a guy I knew had been wrestling since he was a kid and was actually a wrestling coach in my hometown was competing at the beginner no-gi level, mercilessly double legging and rag dolling his poor opponents. I'm starting to sound like a whiney Gen-Xer. Ha! Ultimately, all they can do is their best to make the playing field fair and our job is to train properly and show up. I guess I shouldn't waste too much mental energy on wanting the playing field to be perfectly fair, because it never will. Good luck with your future comps!

    Hey Chewie,
    Long time sub first time commenting here.
    Whilst on this subject can you please do a video on tournament rules for white belts.
    Such as;
    Point system
    What’s illegal just for white belts (wrist locks etc)
    What’s not allowed in general ( I saw another video and someone mentioned reaping which made me wander what else might not be allowed that I wouldn’t be aware of)
    I’ve searched on CZcams for this and can’t find anything comprehensive of the above, I can’t be the only one who’s looking for this :)
    Thanks in advance 🙌🏼

    • @PsychologyOfTheFight
      @PsychologyOfTheFight Před rokem +2

      Varies tournament to tournament but generally:
      Sweep 2 points
      Side control 3 points, Knee on belly 2 points
      Back/mount 4 points
      Almost passing/subbing gets you an advantage. If points tied goes to advantage
      Wrist locks illegal. Only straight ankle locks legal for leg locks
      Reaping illegal
      My unsolicited advice: complete as often as you can. You’ll never feel ready, and it will advance your game leaps and bounds win or lose

  • @Macleod1991
    @Macleod1991 Před rokem

    The main thing all new guys mess up with any tournament is they focus on the tap instead of maneuvering. Opportunities to submit will appear and sometimes submitting someone isn't possible because adrenaline is a hell of a drug ( I had someone in a ezekiel and I was smashing his adams apple in but the dude did not tap until my arms burned out, had to survive the rest of the round like that). In the mean time maneuvering racks up points and tends to keep you on the offense.
    One of the only weird thing I would add for IBJJF is being careful about reaping the knee, they don't allow most lower body stuff at the white belt level, but DeLaRiva does put you at risk of being DQ'd especially if you're trying to do sweep in that position. Certain sweeps are less risky in that position of a ref DQing you but the refs there are very picky about things like that.

      Just do it. There are other newbies just like you mixed in the ranks. Just make sure to weigh yourself with the gi on to make sure you're in the correct weight class. Most gi's add about 5lbs to your weight and if you don't make weight, you get dropped, no refund, so keep that in mind when picking your weight class. Oh and watch your email from them to keep up on updates.

    Chewie, I will be starting BJJ next month. Most of the "What to expect as a beginner in BJJ" videos are focused on people who have never done martial arts before. However, I have over 16 years experience across three other arts. Do you have any advice on someone starting BJJ when you already have a martial arts background?

    • @haila8016
      @haila8016 Před rokem

      Samuel is spot on. Jiu Jitsu is a humbling experience. You need to leave those arts to the side because as a white belt you will figure out quickly that unless you have a competitive grappling background or built like the Mountain you are at the mercy of pretty much most higher belts (semi decent blue & higher).
      If you go in there with a know nothing mentality with zero expectations you will have a better time. I practiced a few martial arts thinking I had a chance. Boy was I wrong. Now when I see people say the same thing it reminds me of my first lessons. Enjoy your first lesson, the first 6 months can be frustrating but if you keep at it you will come across somebody new who will remind you of the old you.

    • @Chewjitsu
      @Chewjitsu  Před rokem +3

      Yep. Leave who you were in that old martial art behind. It's a different world. When I got into BJJ I was a decent wrestler. I thought I'd be like a Blue Belt. I wasn't even close and got smashed by everyone. I loved it, but it was a surprise. It's like a video game. You don't always get to transfer your character from 1 game to another. It's a new game and you've gotta create a new character in some respects.
      You're probably going to learn quickly since you know how to learn martial arts.
      But other than that. Be a clean slate.
      Good luck.

    • @jeremyevantaylor1724
      @jeremyevantaylor1724 Před rokem +1

      Unless one of those other martial arts is Judo, Sambo, Luta Livre, or Wrestling, I wouldn't think of those three other martial arts as giving you any kind of difference other than being used to showing up and training. That's like learning to play tennis for the first time, but thinking you have a leg up compared to the other beginners because you were on the swim team in high school.
