Online Fabric Shopping is a Nightmare

- Because of the times, I've been turning to the internet to buy my fabrics for sewing projects and I've come to realize that the online shopping experience is terrible!
Many of my local retailers only have Facebook pages and the ones that do have an online shop, have a very limited selection of terrible fabrics. Even the major retailers leave a lot to be desired.
But in an effort to not just complain, I decided to open my own online store and sell only the essential fabrics.

Trying to buy fabric online can definitely be frustrating, expensive and problematic. As an alternative, you could try to dye the muslin shirts you make different colors.
That is an interesting idea. The challenge I think is figuring out a way to soften the fabric itself! It's a bit coarse right now.
Ah yes, shopping for fabric online, such fun..until you end up going down rabbit holes🧭 and suddenly realize that you have spent much more time⏳ than anticipated and still have not made a decision🤔 and wishing that you could feel the quality of the several you have narrowed your choices down to🔎, been there and hope you come out of your search with your sanity 😉 and a fabric that is pleasing to you however, that 2nd shirt you crafted👕 is certainly a winner Corn! 👍
I am happy to hear that I'm not the only person who has had a challenging experience with online fabric shopping. Feeling the fabric I have realized is a big part of the shopping experience for me too :)
Thank you for the vote of confidence on attempt #2. Thanks for watching & sharing your thoughts.
That intro was hilarious!
Also, so...you are not starting a store? Those images and sample video of the fabric movement alone had me convinced.
I have half a mind to start a that little side business of selling just basics, but sadly no it isn't a real thing because I remind myself of the time required. Oh, the time!! If only time weren't an issue, you know how many businesses I would have running?!
I love your videos and I learn a lot too!
I'm glad you get something from them!
I've been trying to find a source for high quality oxford cloth and twills in cotton for dress shirts. Driving me absolutely nuts.
I can only imagine!
Sultan's Fine Fabrics is a great one that doesn't tend to show up in the blog lists - I am outside the GTA where the pickins are slim.
I just checked their site. That is a great resource indeed! Thanks for sharing.
You can share more fabric online, brother?
I hate fabric stores that only have quilting cotton. And they have gobs of it!
Isn't that always the case :)
Well I fabric shop a lot in Lancaster, PA, so I gets what I gets… I did find a good one though.
I realize I'm commenting on an old video, but I feel your pain as I am currently going through the same dilemma. I'm a bit old and shakey, so a trip to Fabricland is a real challenge, even though I know for sure what I'm getting there, so I've been searching for a good online fabric store. Joann's has recently opened its online doors to Canada, but I'm very disappointed with the fabrics I've ordered as they're not what I thought when purchased. I, too, have resorted to the muslins; at least I can dye them, but I'm trying to find silk or silk blend and finding it either too expensive or too heavy for my purposes. I guess I'd better pack a lunch and fire up the motor for a trek to Mississauga. Erg!
By the way, I love the design of this shirt - very stylish - and would like to make something similar for my husband. Great video!
Well thanks for going through the old videos and watching them. I still haven't found a good online solution. I tried a few and wasn't impressed. Some of the shops do send out fabric samples which is nice. Blackbird Fabrics does send them for a low fee. Nothing replaces being able to "feel" the fabric.
@@CorneliusQuiring exactly, You like to feel it, gauge its thickness, see how it drapes. I guess that's pretty hard to do for an online store.
I love how you play around with a classic men's shirt. You definitely make it your own.
Thank you. First I've been learning to sew, now I'm figuring out my style :)
@@CorneliusQuiring you're welcome. Watching you taking care to sew your clothes, doing toiles, etc makes me want to take more care with sewing as well. Also, to make a shirt stand out many sewers just make them in bold print, but your sublte changes to the design are much more to my taste.
@@pesahson well thank you. I am a man who likes subtlies and nuances. Textures are more interesting to me than bold prints. I am glad to hear you feel the same. Thanks for watching.
You speak to me from the heart, we are definitely related somehow ... 😊
I mean, it's very likely. My lineage goes back to the region ... :)
yeah... and colors! 4 pictures of the same fabric. For are different. Once I did wrote and send a guide to a store (where I bought fabric), on how to get correct colors on pictures :D
Good on you for doing your part to help making things better online! You are better then I am. 😁
Can i suggest you iron your fabric before placing patterns..you wont be sorry , wrinkles can make the sizing incorrect..You are a very good and I think intuitive sewer, the simple things make a lot of difference..
That is a very good point and indeed, makes a difference. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and for watching my videos.
😁 I briefly tried to shop online, it is expensive and you can't feel the quality. I'll have to work through the stack
I'm glad to hear I have someone to commiserate with. I fear however my stash is a little measly and won't lend to may projects :)
I think the programs that you had last jear ,we' re very good.
Thank you.
Took me a week to figure out what fabric I needed for a plain white T-shirt. And another week to find appropriately sized rib knit for cuffs, collar, waist. Very unfriendly UI experience for noobs that don't know the terminology of all the different types of materials for a project as simple as a T-shirt.
And after all that, I ended up with a fabric that was entirely too transparent, and ribknits that were much larger than as described and pictured on the website....I guess I just need to order a few volumes of swatches next time...☹️
Any chance you could put together a video with recommendations for common, basic menswear fabrics? like twill for chinos, jersey recs for Ts, french terry(?) for sweatshirts/hoodies, nylon vs poly for outerwear/bomer jacket, and Ribknits for collars and cuffs?
Thanks!
Oh my! Well I am happy to hear I am not the only one struggling so much! I'm sorry to hear that things dod not work out for you!
I have a half a mind to start the little online fabric business after all! Tehehe.
I will give your video idea some thought and see if there is anything I can do effectively. Thank you for the suggestion.

Not sure how you feel about linen. Your fellow countrymen, Blackbird Fabrics has white. Great job on second wearable sample.
Thanks for the vote of confidence on the attempt #2. Besides it making for a good bit, I do think linens can be interesting and am definitely planning to make myself a nice summer shirt with some. :)
They call it a "Henley" shirt. 🤷
👍🏻
Hi Cornelius, how did you hide browser's url and tabs blank? Is it a plugin or simple video montage?
That is thanks to a bit of TV magic. Photoshopping really.
Maybe the solution isn't opening your own online fabric store, but reaching out to fabric stores selling online and offering your web design services? You addressed two of the biggest problems with your "mockup" in this movie (seeing and "feeling" texture). If you could also improve on the SEARCH mechanism (or lack thereof!) you would hit the trifecta! 😁
That's a great idea. I think you're onto something here!
I wasn't the only one
We're all suffering here :)
instead on line head down to queen west toronto between spidina an agusta. Is this a hobby of yours or did you get proper training and if so where iam 53 and have a passion to make my own clothes but i do not have any experience
That's where I do go! There are a couple shops in that area I frequent. I am all self-taught. Just a whole bunch of random CZcams videos and a whole lot trial and error :) I think you can learn it too!
Thank you for your encouraging words!
Я кажется знаю с кого писали Ричарда Сапогова
Право на!
Every time I watch a sewing video and I hear 3/8 of an inch my head is going to explode... How is that better than a decimal metric system...
Because it would all be too easy with the decimal system. Hahaha. Jokes aside, thanks for watching.
@@CorneliusQuiring This is not an attack on you of course or the many North American CZcams I watch and like.
oh no stress. Imperial does not make logical sense and as a Canadian, technically I should be using the metric system ... haha.
But... where will you buy the essential fabrics for your shop? 😂😂
That is the real conundrum. Will I have to learn how to weave fabrics?! 😶
最終的に結論が来ると思ったら勝手に終わったー
😏
Lol so releatable
Glad to hear it :)
