- There are a few places in Australia where we discover true outback wilderness. Normally, we seek it out. This time, it found us.
After finishing our Nullarbor crossing, we continued west and found ourselves in WA's outback and on a dirt road 'shortcut'. The best parts of travel are unplanned, and this one is no exception!
Sadly, we lost our mate Denis Bartell not long after arriving in Busselton. Denis was a true pioneer and explorer, inspiring us in our pursuit of outback travel.

Guys, what a lovely dedication to a unique, never to be repeated, Australian. Denis was a lovely friend and neighbour of ours and I was privileged to spend a lot of time with him and Jeanne over the last 9 years. I was really touched by you reading Big Red, as I read it at our Over 50's Lifestyle Village Australia Day Celebration. Years ago, when I first read it, I was blown away that this adventurer, have a go at anything Aussie, could write something with such feeling. If you drop in to see Jeanne when you come through this way again, we would love to meet you. Denis and Jeanne spoke highly of the two of you, and after seeing this video, I can see why. That was a beautiful poem by Dennis, it brang our memories of big red to life, we spent a week playing on and around it’s a special place that sticks in your memory. What an amazing life story I now have to go learn more about, thank you ☺️

Yes I understand that feeling about not wanting to do something that you had intended to do, but I sick pretty tired of needing to pay for such a lot of touristy stuff, and now and then I feel nope not doing it this time , all of a sudden didn’t feel that important. Same here. I saw Wave Rock back in 2018. It was crowded back then and you had to pay for everything back then too. We rather go to not so touristy destinations that are not so easy to reach by everyone. :) Wave Rock was ok, but I am sure there is more impressive stuff out there. Happy travels.

you guys are kool, Years ago I gave an old fella a ride from Erldunda NT to Adelaide.This old fella was old Tom Kruse. who is old Tom kruse you ask, google it. The man who opened up the REAL ozzy outback that everyone enjoys now. Gave me a tour and a camp for the night at his home in Adelaides suburbs, a very well kept tall ceilings , long hallways really the shite old house. Down the hallways? Tapestries hung on either side. These creations would have taken weeks , more, too complete. So much detail. Done by his Grandmother in different , slower times. You made it this far, you know old Tom is really Esmond Gerald Kruse, the water man of central Australia.👍
That's a great story. We know who Tom is! We've read his book and visited the Maree pub where there's a mini museum about him. He was another true pioneer 👍
Quite jealous of your new suspension. We did the tip in October and the corrugations were horrendous. Sadly, with my new LC 300 Sahara, with its fancy technology in suspension, as well as the fancy airbags and ESC on our van, I had to get down to 12 and 15 kph or the two clever suspensions ( car and van) would try to take over my driving. Simply unallowed to go any quicker. Made for a longer time driving, but we didn't break anything other than loosen a few screws.....easily fixed.
Hmm. that's interesting. And concerning. It is one of the things we like about the 70 series, much simpler.

The Hyden-Noseman road used to be a favourite of mine. Unfortunately it has been wrecked by nickle-ore road trains. Wave Rock has become a touristy rip-off. There are several other wave rocks around the place that I know of, some in quite remote places, but I never say where they are!
