  • The Harpoon (RGM-84, UGM-84, AGM-84) is a U.S.-designed subsonic antiship cruise missile that has been in service since 1977. Numerous variants have been produced since its inception, including air-, ship-, and sub-launched versions. The Harpoon has also undergone multiple upgrades to improve its range and guidance. Variants of the Harpoon have been exported to 32 countries.

Both still are too slow to get even close to any near peer enemy, from Russia to China to India for that matter.
Get a missile like the hypersonics that Russia has, from the Zircon, on up, then I'll care. Did you know, Russia so overmatches the US with missiles that can deliver nuclear weapons, they have over the last 3 or 4 years spent LESS money on their military? They don't have to spend much, if they could destroy the US so easily. And YES, in 8 minutes, from the Ural mountains, so it's possible that no counter strike may get to be ordered, because the command structure would all be dead.
If you have noticed, the US will no longer only be fighting wedding parties and funeral processions in deserts, so, the 20th Century tech is no longer useful in any way but wasting our taxpayer dollars. Given the Pentagon has failed it's audit for the second year, who knows how much our military has stolen from us already! It's at least as much as the total gov't payables for loans of over 21 trillion dollars. War, what a racket!

You missed something about the upgrades to the 1C variant, the software allowed the missile to be programmed with a mid-course dogleg or slight turn, this allowed for the shooting platform to mask its reciprocal bearing, and also allowed for multiple missiles to be fired sequentially but with varying length doglegs they could arrive at the target simultaneously...

The patrol boats were completely destroyed. The USS Richmond K Turner CG-20 is accredited with being the first US warship to fire surface to surface Harpoon missile in combat. Second, the Harpoon is an old 1980's tech which will easily be countered by modern defense systems.

Which I guess puts the deploying craft at risk because the launch needs to be carried out closer. Imagine your under attack, fire off your best offensive weapon and watch them get shot down, while you’re under fire yourself.

I was on a fast attack in the late '70s. I remember my CO saying he only wanted Mk48 torpedoes. As the video shows, the harpoons are not very powerful. They wouldn't sink a heavy ship. On top of that the harpoon would could be traced back to where you fired from. Not good. Especially if the target wasn't sunk and could launch a helicopter to get you. The Mk38 torpedo would break the keel of anything it hit and sink it. Big difference.

@@colejones594 Ding Ding. And thats the real kicker. Even when hypersonic the amount of time it takes for the missile to travel and try to correct its course will be horrendous as ships would not be sitting still and are maneuvering to avoid getting hit. The further away the launch for the missile the least likely that missile will hit anything but water. The only real danger is "IF" it hits it will be devastating. Think of one of the Transformer movies where a decepticon crashes into a carrier and sinks it in one hit. Again. Those missiles would connect just by sheer luck.

I play an old computer game called Harpoon from the early 1990s where the US Navy fights against the Russian navy. I fired Harpoon missiles at Russian task force ships but many of them were shot down by Russian missiles because of their speed, 150 miles/hour. I could launch from either ships, subs, or A-6s. Some Harpoon missiles hit their targets, many destroyed in flight. Today the US needs a better missile to replace the Harpoon like the French Exocet that sank British ships at the Falklands war. Even today the Russian and Chinese navy is a threat to the US and we must be ready for anything.
