- The Harpoon (RGM-84, UGM-84, AGM-84) is a U.S.-designed subsonic antiship cruise missile that has been in service since 1977. Numerous variants have been produced since its inception, including air-, ship-, and sub-launched versions. The Harpoon has also undergone multiple upgrades to improve its range and guidance. Variants of the Harpoon have been exported to 32 countries.

LRSAM & NSM... That's what we need. The harpoon is past outdated.
Good to know....Thanks very much...!
Both still are too slow to get even close to any near peer enemy, from Russia to China to India for that matter.
Get a missile like the hypersonics that Russia has, from the Zircon, on up, then I'll care. Did you know, Russia so overmatches the US with missiles that can deliver nuclear weapons, they have over the last 3 or 4 years spent LESS money on their military? They don't have to spend much, if they could destroy the US so easily. And YES, in 8 minutes, from the Ural mountains, so it's possible that no counter strike may get to be ordered, because the command structure would all be dead.
If you have noticed, the US will no longer only be fighting wedding parties and funeral processions in deserts, so, the 20th Century tech is no longer useful in any way but wasting our taxpayer dollars. Given the Pentagon has failed it's audit for the second year, who knows how much our military has stolen from us already! It's at least as much as the total gov't payables for loans of over 21 trillion dollars. War, what a racket!
Then don't watch idiot..go to china and russian channel oops sorry they don't have any special weapon to show..

@@jonathanmartin7046 The missile guidance computer scenario works as follows. Because the variation has modified some the information the missile has optained, it is not sure just where it is. However it is sure where it isnt, within reason, and it knows where it was. It now subtracts where it should be from where it wasnt or vice versa and by differentiating this from the algebraic sum of where it shouldnt be and where it was, it is able to obtain its deviation and the variation.
That's great man your Killin me!!
You missed something about the upgrades to the 1C variant, the software allowed the missile to be programmed with a mid-course dogleg or slight turn, this allowed for the shooting platform to mask its reciprocal bearing, and also allowed for multiple missiles to be fired sequentially but with varying length doglegs they could arrive at the target simultaneously...
@troll oracle Fighter jets are classified by generation that is not typically a term associated with ASMs, if you would have paid attention to the video you would have heard that the 1C upgrades were released in 1985, I wasn't claiming it was new or special by today's standards, I was just commenting that it was a significant feature of that particular upgrade.

At 8:28 in the 1986 "Line of Death" incident in the Gulf of Sidra instigated by then Libyan president Muammar Gaddafi it was the USS Richmond K Turner CG-20 that fired RGM-84 Harpoon missiles at Libyan patrol boats after they had locked their radars on an American aircraft. The patrol boats were completely destroyed. The USS Richmond K Turner CG-20 is accredited with being the first US warship to fire surface to surface Harpoon missile in combat. That was a decommissioned Royal Australian Navy destroyer escort, HMAS Torrens. She was hit by an Australian submarine(HMAS Farncomb I think) launched Mk48 torpedo, not a Harpoon missile. There’s plenty of footage on CZcams of that live fire exercise.
1:50 - The INS Eilat was not sunk by a single Soviet Styx missile as indicated by the narration, but was instead hit by a total of three Styx missiles. The ship was brought under control after the damage of the first two missiles, but the third one launched an hour later was too much and it sank shortly afterward. On the Littoral Combat Ship, Harpoon lost out to a Swedish missile using a smaller warhead. Some Harpoons are being refurbished for re-introduction to USN SSN's.
Don't think they ever took the Harpoons off the SSNs and LCS is actually going to a Norwegian missile but still has Harpoons for the interim. The NSM from koenegburg is the very new and stealthy ASM the F35's weapons bay was designed around carrying.
The Harpoon Block 3 is being phased out by the NSN. The Harp has a 500lb delayed detonation armor piercing for max blast effect.
We had these in the mid '80's in the Australian Navy.
Still do.
All of the changes are in the electronics, Naval architecture hasn't changed much since the end of World War II so there hasn't been much need for changes in the warheads.

less than they have
And who actually has a deplorable rail gun? I’ll give you a hint, it starts with no and ends with body.
First, the thumbnail picture used for this video is showing a very old rail launched missile. Almost every modern missile on a ship is launched from a VLS cell ( vertical launched cell).
Second, the Harpoon is an old 1980's tech which will easily be countered by modern defense systems.
Third, it's very slow compared to the competition from other countries.
However it can still be good against lesser defended enemies.

The Harpoon can still sink practically every navy out there, especially if fired from a stealth platform.
Like the Zumwalt.
I have no doubt in any missiles capability to do damage, but somehow these spies and designers get information that create either doubt in their own system or more efficient systems that have to be explored, radar guided UGM 84 isn’t fast either, the countermeasures would have time to target and fire upon this missile. Which I guess puts the deploying craft at risk because the launch needs to be carried out closer. Imagine your under attack, fire off your best offensive weapon and watch them get shot down, while you’re under fire yourself.
I guess dead from an old missile or dead from a top of the heap missile...is still dead.
I was there, operation Praying Mantis. Naval Aviator.

Proper title for this video: "HOW VERSITILE IS THE HARPOON MISSLE?"
the superpower's super advancement!!!
I was on a fast attack in the late '70s. I remember my CO saying he only wanted Mk48 torpedoes. As the video shows, the harpoons are not very powerful. They wouldn't sink a heavy ship. On top of that the harpoon would could be traced back to where you fired from. Not good. Especially if the target wasn't sunk and could launch a helicopter to get you. The Mk38 torpedo would break the keel of anything it hit and sink it. Big difference.
I’m sure it’s a “bridge” killer. A ship is nothing without its captain. It skims the water to avoid defenses.
Harpoon has not killed a single major ship. This is a fact. It is useless like the Sparrow missile

stl26mo my question about hypersonic missiles is can it Maneuvered during its flight or would the g force rip the missile apart
@@colejones594 Ding Ding. And thats the real kicker. Even when hypersonic the amount of time it takes for the missile to travel and try to correct its course will be horrendous as ships would not be sitting still and are maneuvering to avoid getting hit. The further away the launch for the missile the least likely that missile will hit anything but water. The only real danger is "IF" it hits it will be devastating. Think of one of the Transformer movies where a decepticon crashes into a carrier and sinks it in one hit. Again. Those missiles would connect just by sheer luck.
I play an old computer game called Harpoon from the early 1990s where the US Navy fights against the Russian navy. I fired Harpoon missiles at Russian task force ships but many of them were shot down by Russian missiles because of their speed, 150 miles/hour. I could launch from either ships, subs, or A-6s. Some Harpoon missiles hit their targets, many destroyed in flight. Today the US needs a better missile to replace the Harpoon like the French Exocet that sank British ships at the Falklands war. Even today the Russian and Chinese navy is a threat to the US and we must be ready for anything.
The days of aircraft carriers and manned aircrafts are numbered with the latest missile, drone and laser weapon technology
bruh thats a game.
Correction! Russian and Chinese Navies are not a threat to US. US is the threat to Russian and Chinese Navies. US is a threat to the whole world except to their lacky the UK.

Harpoon's ranges is the biggest shortcoming
Very good and powerful
What they have & what they let us know are 2 different things.
Just here checking on the status of our missles
How about the version that fits on a Honda Type R ?
Harpoon missile was designed with scalability included, that means five years from the development and the deployment we can add Advanced sensors and all types of things and it fits and you don't have to change the whole system of the missile to add on these modifications it's an incredible platform I'm really impressed with the Harpoon cuz one thing I know about it if you are fired it's going to get you
Sure it will "get you", if your target is some somali pirate fishing boat! Against a prepared warship? Hell no! Too slow, ample time for reaction and counter-measures. While the rest of the world went supersonic, and then hypersonic, the US remained in a placid subsonic mindset. Harpoon and Tomahawk are relics, still being sold because the powers that be are in cahoots with the defense industry. And that truth is well known.
