    I met Three Welsh lads yesterday on the train. They had inlistead in the army. One got a text from his nan saying they were all so proud of him and they loved it. It warmed my heart. This song will remind me of them now.

    Lot's of people on this thread seem to think this is a first world war recruiting song, and the video which accompanies it indicates the same. In fact it refers to either the Napoleonic War or a seventeenth or eighteenth century war (references to Spain which took no part in the First World War show this).

Had British not made the mistake of transportation to the colonies, America would have NEVER won Independence...the Battle of Kings Mountain is where the fields of Culloden was vindicated. @alistairthompson8311 Před 3 lety +6

      Pretty sure the Black Watch lads used to sing this song themselves. If it was considered bad for morale, they probably would have been banned from doing so.
      It's a rousing auld Scottish sodger's song, part of the martial Scottish tradition. It has nothing to do with modern politics i.e. there was no unionist/nationalist split in Scottish politics when this song was written - more likely a Whig/Tory split!
      This song, unless I am very much mistaken, is older than the Conservative and Liberal Parties, let alone Labour or the SNP. It is not about modern day politics, but it is a part of our heritage.

    • @mjxw
      @mjxw Před 3 lety

      Yeah The Corries were much more sophisticated artists than that. I think it's meant be melancholy, an older man looking back on his younger self and remembering that bittersweet emotion of excitement and fear and wistfulness that enlisting meant.

    • @alistairthompson8311
      @alistairthompson8311 Před 3 lety +2

      @@mjxw The Corries wrote and performed uplifting songs as well as melancholy ones. I think you are being misled by the video. Just listen to the words and the sound of the music: there is nothing melancholy about this lively folk song.
      For many war is an adventure and this song encapsulates the spirit of adventure with which many Scots enlisted to fight with the Black Watch in the Austrian War of Succession and many other wars besides. The song is sung from the point of view of a Black Watch recruiting sergeant encouraging young lads to join up and see the world. Nothing very sentimental or thought-provoking about this particular folk song. Just a spirit of adventure, nothing more.
      For a wistful, homesick folk song from a Scottish soldier's perspective from the same sort of era, try 'Lochaber No More'.
