    Lyrics:
    words and music Robert Burns
Where hae ye been sae braw, lad?
Where hae ye been sae brankie-o?
Where hae ye been sae braw, lad?
    Cam' ye by Killiecrankie-o?
An' ye had been where I hae been
    Ye wadna been sae cantie-o
An' ye had seen what I hae seen
    On the braes o' Killiecrankie-o
I fought at land, I fought at sea
At hame I fought my auntie-o
But I met the Devil and Dundee
    On the braes o' Killiecrankie-o
The bauld pitcur fell in a furr
    And Clavers gat a clankie-o
Or I had fed an Athol gled
    On the braes o' Killiecrankie-o
Oh fie, MacKay, What gart ye lie
I' the brush ayont the brankie-o?
    Ye'd better kiss'd King Willie's loff
    Than come tae Killiecrankie-o
It's nae shame, it's nae shame
It's nae shame to shank ye-o
There's sour slaes on Athol braes
    And the de'ils at Killiecrankie-o

This is brilliant. I love it and it brings back wonderful memories of my dad. He died when I was wee. He loved the Corries. I still listen to them and get my kids to listen also!

I used to go to all their concerts in Edinburgh. Pure magic, especially as they stirred the Scottish blood in the way that no other national singing group I've ever heard could.

I just got back from Scotland staying with family in Pitlochry, had a chance to go to the highland games. From the stories uncle Ian told of the past I was simply amazed, made it up to Tomintoul as well what a beautiful drive. Needless to say it will not be my last

Rabbie Burns wrote the words, but it's unlikely that he wrote the tune too. Wikipedia states that the melody is much older. In fact four different tunes are associated with these lyrics.

    • @robertwhittaker5477
      @robertwhittaker5477 Před 5 lety +2

Rather ironically, [given the lyrics and especially the subject,] this tune is actually a 'variant' of the old - English! - folk tune "Dives & Lazarus". It's not one of the variants used by Vaughan Williams in his "Five Variants of Dives & Lazarus", but a very closely similar version can be heard in the first of George Butterworth's "Two English Idylls."

Ian Russell This is the way I can start my morning and put energy into both soul and body. Great group - and the one heroic in suffering at his last; and a great song. The history is especially interesting to tie into the song
