  • Can you imagine what life was like before smartphones and the internet? Or what old people think of tinder and selfies? Well, I decided to find out. I met with residents of a retirement community to learn more about their way of life, and if their values differ from ours in this modern digital world.

      I used to live in Texas and a high school close to me had a wonderful program called Sages and Scribes. The young people from high school would visit us, we would tell them our stories and they would write them down. They were graded for their stories in their English studies and we got copies to read. I would highly recommend it if you could do something like this. You will learn and you will enrich their lives.

      @MsJudi54 Před 5 lety +4

      Thank you for your comment, Jenny! You'd be surprised how good it feels for you & a friend, parent, grandparent, etc. for you to just make a 5-minute call, or a "quick" visit to their home to let them know you care & you need them as much as they need you!
      I read somewhere a saying: "Learn from the mistakes of others, because you won't live long enough to make them all yourself!" Us older people have lived, loved & laughed, as well as going through adversities, deaths, sadness, arguments, accidents, etc. We have a lot of wisdom (& funny stuff, too) to share w/ young people if the young people can stop long enough to listen.
      We need to listen to young people, also. For instance, my 30 y/o daughter is JAG officer in the military, & she's on leave & staying w/ us for a month to visit & help her dad & I "get into the 21st Century" on paying bills, uploading videos, scanning documents so we can throw away papers that we no longer need, & upgrading our computers. So, it's a two-way street! I love learning new things!
      There are older people who would love your company & who fit your personality & skill set, so don't give up if your first few visit w/ them don't pan out. There are plenty of us out there! Best wishes!

      Well ive lived my younger years without a phone up until 13 and i was more depressed than ever. I felt life fleeting by and something missing, i also grew up outside of the city and I was going only at academic activities. And the arguments in my family were too much sometimes. There was no phone to provide me with online knowledge or an escape from those arguments or variety of social interractions. Older years I bet people were getting easily frustrated with each other cause they couldnt escape the unnecessary dialogues also people were getting much easier influenced by their close circle of friends and family, many people have done things they have regretted because of social pressure. My mom lived through cold war in a communist country and she wishes she had internet back then to disprove the propaganda TVs were feeding them, about how US people were "dying in the streets of hunger". Theres still people who will easily talk to you, i live in NYC now and theres a lot of social activity in the streets. And phones are great, you just have to know how to use them^^

All she cares about is watching tv when she back home from the office. I cant talk to my mother because she doesnt understand me. So i am now depressed and lack connection even though i live with two people. Its a horrible state we are in.

    • @MsJudi54
      @MsJudi54 Před 5 lety +8

      alex 05 Are you purposely being obtuse or sarcastic? Face Time on the iphone is great for long distance relationships, or to "chat" when you're homebound for some reason. It still does not replace human contact where you can hug, hold hands, give a kiss on the cheek.......you know, HUMAN-to-HUMAN contact. Studies have shown that people who go for long periods of time (weeks, months, years) w/out touching or being touched by another human being have an increased chance of severe depression, loneliness, anxiety & suicide. It's called "failure to thrive". They die of loneliness.
      But, technology is great for paying bills, taking spur-of-the-moment photos or videos, learning new things, & even limited time on social media. So, no one is really suggesting we "discard technology", but rather that we use it to augment & enhance our lives, not to control them.

    What a great upload! I had the opportunity at 18 years old to work at a nursing facility for geriatrics - hospice department. I worked at the front desk.I was face to face with people of very old age who suffered from dementia and patients that came in for recovery. I tell you what, I have met many of these people, people who were born in early late 1910 and early 1920s. They gave me the advice that was relative to me at that time. Advice on how to land the proper job. How to talk to people. How to say hi to people. How to bring a smile to others and yourself. Most importantly - how to be a genuine good being. I took all those old age advice and today, I owe my success to them. Sadly they are no longer here. I visited them at my old workplace and only notice one patient that was still alive but was stage 5 dementia. I could not say hi because I was not a relative but the owner of the company recognized me and allowed me to say and shake hands with the woman who i still remember talking to me at 18. This was 15 years later btw.

    Technology has definitely made our lives easier, but it has also made us colder. "The friend comes to life, you see the handwriting, you recognize that friend"... Letters are much more personal. I'll be honest, I'm 28 and I've never sent a letter in my life. Hell, I don't think I've written anything other than my signature by hand, since I graduated 6 years ago. I live abroad, 2000km away from my parents for a better job and more money.
    My mom sends me hand-written birthday, Christmas and Easter cards every year. I've always questioned why she would send me a written thing, when we have video calls every day, both my parents have smartphones with good internet packages and Viber installed, so we could talk at anytime... Well, now I understand and I got a tear in my eye. My mom's birthday is in August and I'm gonna write my first birthday card to her and send it to her by mail. I am sure she would love the gesture.

      larry david i never said technology was bad, I’m just saying it ruins the human interaction between this new generation, which could lead to more secluded lives. And think of all the people you’ve met on the Internet, by now you’ve probably met 100’s of people and how many are cool and you can actually talk with them as friends, majority of the time it’s only a select few. Technology is amazing but we can’t rely on it so much that it becomes are life, instead of talking to people you hardly know over a screen, why not actually meet them and become actual friends and grow a connection?

    I'm surprised they were so up to date with technology, using gifs and ipads. Also that grandma liked your "Look Up" video. That was a fantastic one. So is this. If only there were a way to simplify the world. Seems with every new piece of technology, things get more hectic and complicated.

      You are so right. I'm 19 and usually everyone is getting so excited about new technologies and I'm well aware that it could do great things but I'm honestly so sick of it. Sometimes I just turn off my phone for a week because I need to distance myself from that unnecessary stress and hectic it causes.

      Yep! I'm 64, & can't even go to the bathroom without getting 3-4 phone calls. I try to just ignore them if I see who is calling & they're on my contact list, but then if you don't call them back in a few minutes, they think you don't like them, are trying to avoid them, or that there's something wrong. Sometimes I just want to say, "It's my life & I want peace, quiet & privacy! I'm not bound by law to answer the damn phone!" ;-)
      Of course, one day the phone will be silent, most of my friends in nursing homes or the local cemetery, & I'll wish for a call, even if it's from a bill collector, lol.

    Communication and information technology is such an amazing tool that's revolutionizing the world. I think it's amazing how much we can learn about the world and how many people we can interact with online. As with anything, we need to be smart about how we use it. We need to use it not as a substitute for in-person interaction but as a supplement.

    Honesty, keeping promises and love
    That's my life precepts since last year, and I assure you it works...
    Tell yourself that you can't make promises unless it's real and you're SURE you can fullfill it and you'll see that it's a beautiful drive for motivation and it helps you in certaincase to take you out of your confort zone. My best experience was when I promised to MYSELF that I would say yes every time someone asked me if I wanted to join them for an afternoon or whatever for my entire summer vacations, and I assure you it changed me. So yes, keep promises, that's my heart speaking here

    However we all sometimes forget the older methods of communication can still remain and it’s very personal to get a handwritten letter in the post but it is inconvenient for the communicator.
