    The second installment does not disappoint. I'm not a fan of layout fluid but I can recommend a halogen light at a shallow, raking, angle or - if you're in the field - one of those expensive pencil flashlights. Again, the trick is to position the light source so it's sweeping across the key and down on it. Starter grooves? Sometimes make it harder to see the pin impressions at the beginning. I prefer polishing the key smooth.

      I think the smooth blank surface is the way I’ll go too - the grooves saved little time and led to unclear feedback as you’ll see in the final video of the series on Friday 😉

    That looks like a Rubberbanned impressioning handle! Watching these videos so I can start using mine 😀 Great video!

    I'm loving all the specific practices and such along this series. Your teacher is showing again-and I always love it!
    At this rate, I could see you putting together a booklet or pamphlet on impressioning to go along with this series!

    Great video! One thing I’ve done is to use a 0 cut key, which has just a little material removed from a blank right where you should expect marks to show up.
    I’ve also filed away a lot of a fingernail. I later learned that taping your finger is quite common among experienced impressioners.
    Another tip I sorted out was to check your depth against a key decoder. File a couple of times, check, file, check, until it’s deep enough to go under the next notch of the decoder. The drawback of this is that if your marks or measurement position are centered where they need to be, you can get some misleading results. I know some people who have used a micrometer for the same purpose, but I felt the key decoder was much quicker and easier, though less accurate.

    Great video again Fish! Clear concise process and explanation in a step by step format. You’ve been taught this aspect by experts and are able to convey it so well. Looking forward to the finale! 👏🏻👍🏻✌🏻

    Again some great information. You also (unknowingly) saved me a bunch of money as the next time my wife wants to go and get her her nails done I'll just tell her that I need a hand impressing a lock and let her guide the file with her fingers! It's a Win/Win

    • @fishpicks4531
      @fishpicks4531  Před 3 lety

      I suspect your wife might have a different take on that but good luck mate - it’s a bold strategy! 🤣

    This such a great, informative series. I've already learned so much in just these 1st 2 videos! Really clearly laid out and explained quite intricately. Thank you for putting this together. I've always been much too intimidated to even ever bother looking into impressioning but not anymore!! Brilliant!!

    To speed up the time it takes to do an impression try using a set of deep and spacing keys to make a key. Cut key based on binding order.

    As someone who has also tried this in the recent past I've found that using the lishi cutter instead of a file to actually be easier for me.

    at 9:30 you make 5 notches at a depth of 1. What would happen if you just filed the whole key to a 1 so that 1 was the starting depth?
