The guitar sounds outstanding. I like the blue color and open pore finish. I think the guitar looks even better without the pickguard. Love the sound of P90s, and the feel of a thin neck. The light weight, and balance (no neck dive) are a big plus. Getting a guitar that you don't have to "fix" is worth something of a premium, and donating his share to a worthy cause is good form. It is perhaps a bit pricey, but that's a nice guitar.

The quality on the bench looked great as well. I really don't see the problem here. Okay, price is steep, but if I could play nitro finished guitars, I would definitely take this over P90 LP standard.

LP DC specials as a LP DC Jr which i have (with 2 pups now though) great light guitars. But it so uncomortambly for using during sitting process - learning new material or sofa training - it has too narrow distance between your leg and pikups, and too heavy back part of guitar. It needs an additioanal control everytime as a LP standard. Strats way too convenient in that way.
Need to say i would rather prefer LP tribute series with maple neck, which i have - chould be a litle bit better balance and way too durable neck.

With the price of this one, I feel like Rick as an educator and Gibson should consider an Epiphone version of this guitar for students that don't sit on a lot of cash. Not that $2000 is a lot for a *good* instrument, but still. They would need to get the QC sorted though.

Love the honest review. I love Rick, his channel, and his passion for music education, and I am glad that he got his signature guitar (finally). They should have listed it between 1200-1400. I do love the P90s, though. I think they put the P100s in the previous run of LP Specials.

    Greetings Austin!
I picked up an Epiphone Les Paul in 2019 that is painted in Pelham Blue, it has a gloss finish on top but the satin finish on the back and sides, non of the paint has worn through nor chipped off since April of 2019, so you may find that the finish on that guitar is much more durable than it seems.
It is the only one that I have seen in this paint job with the back of the guitar in the same color but with the satin finish, while having a gloss finish on the top. It also has coil splits on the classic alnico pickups, and it sounds great.

I think it's a beautiful looking guitar. I absolutely love these kind of finishes. I have one of the Epi SG P90's in the worn green; the wear after being played so often, I feel makes the guitar even more bad a$$ looking. That’s awesome Rick gave this model some love! I love my 2003! I rode mine pretty hard the first few years I had it, I wore the frets flat, but the finish is still on it. Polished up in a few places from playing, but still intact. The old ones don’t have the bound fretboard, oh well, I kind of prefer it. The big problem I found was the Gibson branded pots! Trogly, revisit and check the pots! Mine were 250k which made it sound dark and muddy, kind of like your tone test in the video. Swap those for 500k pots and it suddenly sounds like P90’s! I’m not kidding, watch out for those Gibson branded pots. I’ve seen them go both ways, but I feel like they put them in cheaper models so people will want to spend on the pricier models that sound better. All that being said, those are really great guitars that will really treat you well, especially when they were cheap. I think they were $750 back then, I got mine scratch and dent for $425. Scratch and dent on a “worn” finish… hehe. I love that guitar.

Thanks for the honest review, Trogly. It's refreshing to find someone who ignores hype and says if they're disappointed with a product. I've bought the Beato Book and I really like the way Rick is donating his part of the proceeds, but it seems slightly ironic that, as someone so noted as a music teacher, he and Gibson didn't develop a model that combines high quality and greater affordability for student players. I can't pretend I like the factory-fresh metallic finish over open grain (sorry - it somehow looks a bit "cheap" to me), but it will be interesting to see how it wears if it's as thinly applied as you say - it might really come to life and match the "no-nonsense, working guitar" vibe that Rick's signature model otherwise has.

P90 pickups are the best. I fell in love with them when I got a cheap Gibson LP. It had a sound akin to a Telecaster, especially the bridge pickup. It was perfect for any genre, even metal. Funky blues sounded crisp, and fuzzy. Also there wasn't much feedback like a Strat pickup does. It's the perfect single coil. Just my humble opinion.

Everything unnecessary is gone, no grain filer, ultra thin lacquer, less wood, only decal logo. It sounds, resonates and plays just fantastic. The best thing is that it's super light. I never thought this would have such an impact. Picking it up and playing is such a rewarding joy. This one is for the player and I'm not gonna collect it, instead i'll play the shit out of it. To answer your question, I like Rick but it just happens to be exactly the guitar I'd wanted to buy: flat-top double cut with that particular pickguard in that particular color. Was actually expecting it to look darker like Fender's Lake Placid Blue Satin on the American Precision Bass so that's a little disappointing, but a minor complaint. If almost any other detail had been different I wouldn't have bought it, but the fact that such an experienced musician and producer loved this guitar this much does add a bit of confidence for me in buying a guitar that is different than any of my others (I play heavier music where humbuckers are the way to go). I agree that an ebony fretboard would have made it perfect.
I do have to disagree about them being the same as the recent ones. I looked at those a lot and could never bring myself to spend $800 on an ugly dark blue with 2 knobs and a hideous pickguard. Not saying I think this is objectively worth the $2k price but I bought it the second I could so it was an easy call for me and my tastes.

I'm excited for mine to come in. I've been shopping for a p90 guitar for awhile, and when I found out about this guitar I kept my eye on its release. I am excited to own one of these because there aren't many double cuts out there that I've liked, and this guitar is gorgeous. I love the blue, and I really like how the finish shows the grain. I think the fact Rick's proceeds went to charity, it's a unique finish, and a thin body; make up for the 200$ price difference one would have to pay to get a brand new les paul special at 1799$, and that's not even a double cut (which i personally prefer the look of), and no tune-o-matic.
We'll see how limited this release is. If it remains a single 500 guitar run, i think the collector value of this, mint or otherwise because of its unique colored finish, will more than retain/grow the value/cost difference of other 2022 new specials. If they have 3-4 more runs, maybe not, but considering they sold out within hours of the first day of launch, I can't imagine it won't sell more or be worth collecting regardless.

I think the price is just indicative of how stupidly expensive Gibsons are getting nowadays. A regular single cut special is $1800 now. The only other doublecut specials on offer right now are the custom shop reissues. The closest comparable artist model (given artist inflation and whatnot) is Tony Iommi's SG, which is $400 more for a different strap position and bridge. Meanwhile you can get a regular SG Special for $800 cheaper. Gibsons in general just cost too much new to be justified, even with wood shortages.

Well, for a long time I was of the opinion that a guitar needs a lot of wood to sound good and in the 80s I had a much too heavy Les Paul, it didn't sound that great...you just had to have one 😏 But this RB Special here is convincing all along the line, despite the very thin body, the sustain is incredible and the pickups sound very good too...a rocker!!!! Actually different from the P90 in my DUESENBERG. I'm glad she's here; You can argue about the price and the workmanship... I won't let them go anymore and prefer to play 🤘😅

I hope to see more TV Blue Mist, maybe in the mod shop collection. It's gorgeous!

This Rick Beato guitar sounds killer recorded. One of the better p90 guitars. Clean they are not too hot and give a very nicely defined sound.
To select wood this light must have been hard on the Gibson crew. To pay extra for an ultra light guitar. A very desired feature is actually quite inexpensive on this Gibson.

That guitar was MADE TO PLAY! And that’s why that finish is perfect…because it’ll wear in real nice and show it’s been used as a working instrument and not some dumb glass case eye candy.

Rick Beato is a very knowledgeable musician, so when he commissiones Gibson to build him a signature guitar. a person can bet that it will be a pretty good guitar. of course he probably doesn't have as much control over Gibson's quality and pricing. some of that premium in the price could be due to the charity that is involved with the sale of this guitar. so that could take some of the sting out of the price of this guitar. and the guitar must be pretty good if there's none available.

I see what you mean about the price. I picked up a Schecter Solo 2 (LP special single cutaway copy w/ (2) P90's) a couple of years back after hearing concerns about quality on lower end Gibson models. Fit and finish is amazing, it has extra cutaways for comfort, neck binding, ungraded (adjustable) bridge and super light when compared to most sub $1500 LPs. I think it was less than $600 new. That said, I've always wanted a Gibson Les Paul double cutaway. If the Rick Beato model is a bit expensive at $2K, is there any sub $2k Gibson double cutaway with P90's (Either new or used) that you recommend as an alternative? Thank you!

@@Trog , Thank you... I was actually looking at the Les Paul Tribute DC's when I went with the Schecter... seemed to be way more bang for the buck, but then again maybe there isn't such a thing as a sub $1500 LP double cutaway with Neck thru body, adjustable bridge, P90's, independent volume & tone for both pickups, etc.. I've got Gibson taste on an Epiphone budget I suppose.
