Now thats the challenge I've been looking for. Thanks Soham!! Now if only RIO would sell some patience I might get it done without getting a migraine. Lol.
Very apt for what I’ve been attempting - making beads. Big and small. After I punch some large dimples around the rims (solid disk, not filigree), the rims become wavy, thus hard to fit halves together. So, after edges have been sanded, filed, and agonized over, then finally soldered where I can force them to touch, I fashion a wire braid and solder it around the bead’s edge (rim). This hides the gaps where the halves didn’t fit well. The result is interesting, but would never sell in a fine jewelry store. To start, I’ve drilled center holes, thus when the bead (large in this case) is complete, I fashion a wire through the center hole and up twisting into a bale. If the bead is copper I like to finally sand it off with 0000 steel wool. This highlites the bumps I added to begin. Now I’m going to try your filigree bead. I recently made a different sort of flat filigree pendant with a stone soldered on. Since I’m a rank beginner, these are good accomplishments.
I really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos, you are an inspiration to me. I wish I'd had teachers like you at school. Keep up the great work.
did two bangles today, twisted metal about 1mm thick, a bit less, and they both melted while trying to solder them, im using hard silver solder, I used my acet torch last time, it seems to take a life time to liqudise,
Would you be willing to post a video on setting natural sapphires I have a few and I'm kinda stumped on a decent setting that will allow light through but is sturdy enough for a pendant or even an earring set
I saw an Egg that Bert at the Rock Shop in KC made and I thought it was so cool. You made it look so easy. I will attempt to make one now. But I will put a hinge on mine. Thanks for your video's.
Do you think it is best to cut the ingot into strips, then roll ? or roll the full ingot and then cut, its 75mm long, 50mm wide and 6mm thick, the durston coming tomoz, so be able to start making stuff, going to do your forged bangle first I think, thanks soham
oh ok, makes sense thanks, took me loads of pours to get that ingot its hard work, im hoping ill get a few bracelets out of it, What do you usually work to standard thickness of a ring and a bracelet, i realise it depends on the project, just in general, thanks soham im going to do a vid show you all my set up, got a ig work bench in my spare room, mill is coming wed, the first day of my new life as a top jeweler !!
just formed a bangle out of 2m wire, put the hard solder on, put my torch on it for ages, well longer that you seem to do it, then eventually it did it, but melted all the ends of the bangle as well, why you think that is, it was hard solder, a gas and acet set up, day one and all not going to plan, any advice welcome
how can you cut solder without a cutter, some of my stuff came, so thought I do a little bange out of wire, haven't got a cutter so just struggles, tried the saw, a file all sorts, ill get one but any ideas just for now, the snips cant do it that small, all about the tools this game !
hi, another question off your favourite subscriber, im still waitin for some equip to come, I will be working with silver, but eventually want to work with gold, I just cut a scrap ring, flattened it, annealed it, and was going to stamp something on the inner side, just practice really, but it didn't go that soft, and the stamp hardly showed, so my question is, are there different techniques between working on silver and gold, or are the techniques similar, thanks anyones help be appreciated
ok, your right, its hard pouring a full flat ongot with out getting some im perfections in it, the durston came before best five hundred quid spent, Im making a twisted bangle as we speak, out of silver, just came to solder it, using propane gas gun, the solder didn't want to melt, then half the bangle just melted on me, I thought hard solder would have a lower melting point than stirling silver, am I doing something wrong do you think ? im going to post a video next few days showing my set up
what size metal can your mill roll soham ? om melting ingots down, and my mill cant do it and its only 7mm thick, is that because its a poor mill or is that the norm ? thanks
hi soham, all going well, I have made two silver bangles, one en graved on the outside in a pattern, and filled with siver of sulphur, im going to set four rubys in that one, and the other one, etched on the inside a name and birth date, filled with sulphur, going to set stones in that one as well, going to start on gold soon, Do you know can you etch gold ? and what is the book you recommend for helping find points on a circle, my first bangle the stone settings are slightly out of sync I think
Soham quick question...planning a twisted wire bangle with sterling , 14/20 gold filled and rose gold filled wire components Wondering if I can pickle the finished piece without risk of turning the sterling pink ?
cheers thanks, going to buy a mill next week, a durston one costing about £600, you need it tho dont you, tht crappy one i got made me realise, especially with me melting my own metal, which i can understand, why you dont bother with, its a whole diff ball game
you make everything look easy soham believe me, just melted down some silver into a little ingot, about 8mm thick, I got a cheap rolling mill, cost me £100, it is too thick to go through, when you open the mill out, to take the 10mm, the two rollers on the side don't touch so the things don't turn, gutted, I didn't think a mill would not be able to do something 10mm thick, should of bought a better one
The durston is on order, comin wed, costin £480, is there any way you can work out, how far you can make the metal go, ie, im rolling a 6mm ingot 75m long, if I roll it to 2mm thick, can I calculate what length it will go ? thanks ste
Hey Soham, hope all is well. can you recommend a source for heavy gauge vermeil wire 12 gauge. (sorry 2.05 mm wire.) I would like to incorporate the look of gold into a primary sterling project without the prohibitive cost of 14k. btw missing your videos.. hope everything is OK ?
most of my problems, stemming from trying to melt my own silver down, for the price, im prob just better, ordering it in the form I need it in, save all th messing, trying to make wire through the mill and its coming out like a banana
ye, i got iy for £100 second hand, its a cooksons, the cheapest one, gutted all my stuff arrived, was going to to your forged bangle, and my mill cant handle a 6mm ingot, suppose you get what you pay for, thanks
the only reason sterling would turn pink would be if you put steel binding wire in the pickle, or if you placed or removed the item with steel tweezers.
this would be a "back set" setting, make the filigree to the shape of the stone with claws at the back, push the stone in, then push the claws over, i will do one soon, am in the process of moving house and studio is in turmoil
i suspect it is a poor mill, it should handle a 7mm ingot easily. mine is a durston 230 roma, you usually get what you pay for in a mill, good ones are usually expensive, but worth it in the long run.
Very beautiful

I love your work
could you show us how to do gold or silver balls. for finishing the end of a bangle and then attaching them to the bangle ? thanks soham u da man
I love that filigree ball.
That is very nice & I will give it a try. How do you place/hold/secure the two halves together for the final soldering? Thank you!
I really appreciate you taking the time to make these videos, you are an inspiration to me. I wish I'd had teachers like you at school. Keep up the great work.

Just discovered your videos, and I've been watching all night. Thanks for being awesome!
I love filigree. Unsoldered joins are my bane!
Loved it! Thanks again. I just took a course on basic jewellery skills - I'm learning more here!
Would you be willing to post a video on setting natural sapphires I have a few and I'm kinda stumped on a decent setting that will allow light through but is sturdy enough for a pendant or even an earring set

Enjoying the videos so much! Great teaching!
Never saw this before, amazing how you can make your own filigree, loved it. Loved your shirt dven more 😁
Gorgeous! Thank you for another great lesson.
Hello from Canada! I've watched many of your videos now and just wanted to share how much I appreciate your work. You're an awesome teacher!

Thank you, Mr. Harrison.
I love your shirt too!
Im only guessing but a steel binding wire would do the job, just dont forget to take it off before you pickle it!
Great craftsmanship! Do you have a website with more in depth instructions?
ok, your right, its hard pouring a full flat ongot with out getting some im perfections in it, the durston came before best five hundred quid spent, Im making a twisted bangle as we speak, out of silver, just came to solder it, using propane gas gun, the solder didn't want to melt, then half the bangle just melted on me, I thought hard solder would have a lower melting point than stirling silver, am I doing something wrong do you think ? im going to post a video next few days showing my set up
nice Soham thx....btw love the wolf too!
thank you for sharing your work with all the unknown people around the globus, soham.
what size metal can your mill roll soham ? om melting ingots down, and my mill cant do it and its only 7mm thick, is that because its a poor mill or is that the norm ? thanks
how do you get the paper to stay in the split mandrel soham ? mine flaps round bad style, thanks your humble apprentice ste
love your work and instruction

thx..wasn't sure how the gold filled components would react as I have not used them in the past..thx again Soham
I love the wolf! and the sphere :) Thank you again!
Brilliant tutorial. Noticed you haven't uploaded in a while - hope you're doing ok!
Best,

Your a welcome distraction..
I love art Deco so this is just something I could eat...and will be making it very soon 🌸🌹🌼😎
Hi Soham, would this project work well with fine silver?
it works well with sterling i think fine might be too soft
Words I can never share🌹🌸

beautiful work, great tutorial thanks.

while they are selling patience I could use a few more hours in a day too!
Obrigado. Thanks
Ps hope your moving to Melbourne ...yay !
most of my problems, stemming from trying to melt my own silver down, for the price, im prob just better, ordering it in the form I need it in, save all th messing, trying to make wire through the mill and its coming out like a banana

Think I will put a secret inside it..🌹🌸🌼😎
thanks
✝️
why is charcoal better?
the flux does not stick to the charcol
i like the idea. you could just leave a portion unsoldered, and push the stone (pearl) in and push the portion back in place and leave it unsoldered.
the only reason sterling would turn pink would be if you put steel binding wire in the pickle, or if you placed or removed the item with steel tweezers.
thanks barbara, where in canada?
this would be a "back set" setting, make the filigree to the shape of the stone with claws at the back, push the stone in, then push the claws over, i will do one soon, am in the process of moving house and studio is in turmoil
i suspect it is a poor mill, it should handle a 7mm ingot easily. mine is a durston 230 roma, you usually get what you pay for in a mill, good ones are usually expensive, but worth it in the long run.
it is easier to cast the ingot size you want to work with than to cut down a bigger one
stick the paper through about 8mm and fold it around the mandrel then it will stay on
rolling to half the thickness will double the length
thanks ;-)
