I just got an EV9 on Saturday. Looked at both the Light LR and GT Line, ended up going with the Light. Loving it so far. Did a drive on Sunday from my house to the EA chargers they have installed at the VW plant in Chattanooga just to feel what a longer trip would feel like. Can't wait for an actual road trip I have coming up in a couple of weeks.

I would only recommend the RWD if you know you won't need AWD and want to save some money because you don't care about 0-60 times as you'll still leave ICE vehicles in the dust at the light.
The difference in range comes down to which settings that you use, how fast you are going, and the extra weight from the AWD models. Note that you will get more range with smaller tires, but AWD with the smaller tires can go just as far as the RWD with the bigger tires. Hope this helps.

Judging by the size of those blades. Likely between 3-4MW tower. There’s several study’s into emissions made to produce them and transport/maintain them and it’s anywhere between 6months to a few years to offset the emissions. The bigger the tower, the shorter the time.

Kyle you mentioned a few times that EPA testing should allow the car to run eco mode and disconnect the front motor. But remember the new EPA rules don’t allow that. The car maker has to run the car in both the least efficient and most efficient settings and then report the average or if they don’t want to run 2 tests they can choose to report only the least efficient settings result.

  • @BremboT
    @BremboT Před 3 měsíci +5

Easy answer to the range discrepancies question Kyle - they conduct their range test in normal mode, or the mode the vehicle defaults to at start. Eco and Sport mode are considered extremes. Same reason Sport modes aren't used for range test by these agencies. Some petrol cars have to get their sport/drag mode uninstalled to be legal in some states.

Re: Wind turbines. These are offset with a year or two of operation, with most turbines having a life of about 25 years. Industry figures are about 6 grams of carbon/kwh of energy produced for turbines vs. 900 grams/kwh at a coal plant, so about 99% lower.

Not surprised they are similar when you set them to eco and only run rear wheel drive. I would expect a difference if you run in normal mode and have more stops and acceleration. For me the choice is much more about the price of the car. My EV6 is the RWD because it’s cheaper. I really don’t think most people have a use for AWD unless the RWD doesn’t have enough power as it sounds like the EV9 may. I say spend that extra money on good winter tires instead (Nokian maybe 🙂)

Really really interesting on the odometer difference between the two cars. When we purchased a Niro, I asked the dealership about buying a set of the aerodynamic wheels to put on the higher trim level and they were adamant that the speedometer/odometer is calibrated between the trim lines and the different size tire would cause the speed/odometer to be off. This is kinda showing to me at least that when the tire used is just like 1% different circumference KIA might not even calibrate for the new size.
And maybe its still not a worry because tire wear will still change the circumference anyway
Awesome test, really interested to see if you notice a difference with Ioniq trims. Also curious if you have a set of calipers to measure tread wear in the future; I know you mentioned both of these were "broken in" but since you're big on data collection anyway it'd be yet another data point haha

I am SOLD on EV9, and I'm trying to decide between Land and GT-Line trim; trying to decide whether air suspension is worht extra money? AS far as the small battery, Reason to buy besided teh $55k price is as a in town car for a parent driving kids around, and I think it could make a great uber/lyft car as well for that price? I mean, the Land/GT-Line would be nicer for that purpose, but a %55k car to drive around town, which cnan do trips from time to time is a great family value!

One thing that needs to be tested here is city driving. They may go the same distance on the highway with the motor disconnect on the higher trim, but that might change with stop and go traffic. If you are engaging and disengaging that second motor more frequently, I bet there's a larger difference between the two on overall efficiency.

  • @ouch1011

That’s impressive, given that the GT Line uses much larger wheels and tires. The Hankook Ion EV tires are pretty impressive.
I’m looking forward to getting 2.5mi/kwh. With the rain and (somewhat) cold that we’ve been getting here, I’ve been getting closer to 2.0-2.1 pretty consistently. But my Ioniq5 would only get 2.5-2.6 in the same conditions, so it’s really not substantially worse given how much bigger the car is.

This was a great test, thanks. Even before this, I thought it was odd marketing - 15-20 miles of specified range difference simply isn't significant in anything you're going to do. After watching the video, maybe the "long range" moniker is something of a sweetener (artificial, perhaps?) to offset the dramatically lower engine power numbers. As you show, it's not much of a benefit, though of course you're paying less, too. Thanks, again.

25:39 the cruise control is less strict on Eco mode and allows the speed to rise and fall. This should happen less in the Normal mode.

Your driving speed, temperature, elevation, and wind are the biggest factors when it comes to range. Driving it on the highway at 80 mph in sport mode up a mountain at 0 degrees with wind in your face will significantly reduce the range. If you have no question about the range, drive it the way you want to but if it will be close, keep it in Eco mode closer to 65-70 mph.

23% battery used. The difference probably scales over a 100% batter used. But ya probably so that the difference on a nice day is margin of error and discrepancy in mileage. Would be nice to track mileage gps and compare which tires are more accurate.

About the wind turbine carbon offset , i was curious so I made the calculation.
Assuming you are comparing electricity production in comparison to natural gas and coal plant, here are the number :
This is probably a wind turbine of 6MW , and most windmills runs about 45% efficiency annually, so that produce 23 millions kWH annually with 0 emissions.
The equivalent coal and natural gas plant would generate respectively 11 000tm and 7000 tm of CO2 annually. Life expectancy of a wind turbine is about 30year, so you will save about 350 000tm of CO2.
Of course their is emissions from the manufacture and construction of the wind turbine , but so does the coal power plant, not to mention the mining/extraction of the coal itself

I think Jordan was mentioning the emissions cost of the transportation; how much carbon is expelled while trucking the turbine blades across the country to the point of installation. Probably fairly small, and may also be similar to the pipelines involved with natural gas

Did not see the value in this test by only driving 58 miles. Kyle’s conclusion was that both models have same efficiency so no difference. Kyle knows better than this, too short of test to get overall efficiency comparison. Based on OOS’s own range tests of these vehicles, the RWD base did 278 mi 2.8 mi/kw and the AWD GT line did 260 mi (Kyle got 266 mi but he kept putting the car in neutral down hills at the end so did that for at least 6 miles so I adjusted … you can’t counting coasting in N as part of your total range) so 2.6 mi/kw … so that is the difference. Both performed a little worse than EPA estimates. But day-in and day-out the base RWD is more efficient and has a longer range. They are not the same.
