As wary as i am about (Thrasher) selling out, i also still think that nailing this down to profit puts a cynical twist to it that Thrasher - or skateboarding itself for that matter - doesn’t deserve. If Thrasher is what skateboarding represents (as debatable as that is), then a SOTY must represent Thrasher.

This is how it's always been except it was Phelps making the call. If he didn't like someone they didn't get shine in the mag. If he was closer to another skater in a big convention year, it was always the person that was closer to Phelps. Just like Gary said, David Gonzalez was on tour with Phelps while Guy was putting his photos in The SB Mag. Whoever got their name bigger in Phelps eyes got it. That's what's happened since the 90s.
This take doesn't make sense because Miles Silvas didn't drop his part until Mid December. You're telling me they saw more sales late in the last month of the year?! This is BS.

It is quite literally impossible to create a Skater of the Year award and be unbiased. It's entirely subjective. Thrasher can objectively account for fiscal gains though, which is how they decide and frankly, makes sense.

This award feels much less prestigious now. I’m not sure this was the correct move for Thasher as a brand to come out and admit that this is how the voting process actually goes down.

For all these years I thought the winner was who Thrasher thought laid down the heaviest parts/tricks over the last 12 months in skateboarding. Now I know it’s who served the company the most. Doesn’t seem to have the same weight to it now.

Gary is shooting himself in the foot here and actually making the perception on SOTY worse than it was. So if you don't have covers/features/interviews in Thrasher, it's your fault. If you release a beast part for your board or shoe company, it doesn't count. It's only based on who helped Thrasher profit the most, and who had their "moment". And moment is defined by what they did specifically for Thrasher, not for skateboarding. And criticizing their choice or speculating is bad for skateboarding because we're not Thrasher insiders with the password to the building and we don't know what's going on behind closed doors.. Gotcha, well, the award means less to me than it did before I watched this video. Fuck it. Gary is annoying.

I get it, Thrasher’s SOTY has a a financial meaning behind it. That’s fine they need that to stay alive.
Now we need a SOTY award from someone (The Nine Club) that actually appreciates the work some of these people put into their craft. Shit they can even pick SOTY categorized by type of sponsor. Board brands, shoe brands, wheels, etc, etc…. There’s so much content and so many different styles that it would be basically impossible to pin just one individual. I dont think The Nine Club should turn into some big sport analysis type show but I think a lot of people in this community deserve that praise.

TJ's wins are undeniable years of insane skating + everything he did for Thrasher... its THRASHER's SOTY!! what we need is more diversity of awards that matter. Since all the other publications are becoming more irrelevant, they don’t matter as much so we only have thrasher soty to look to. yall want more options then pull up and support all your favorite publications and skate brands so they too can host big awards

I think we all understand why Thrasher picks who they pick, we just wish it was less biased to who does the most for the mag and more for who puts out the best shit that year in general. Yes, it's "Thrasher" SOTY, but I think people feel that since Thrasher is so legendary and represents skateboarding, that they would do what's right by skateboarding. Obviously, not how it works, but how most people would like it to work.
Gary is right though. We just need to stop looking at it that way and someone needs to create an unbiased SOTY award that goes to the correct person via fan/skater voting. We shouldn't think of Thrashers SOTY as the actual SOTY. We all know it's politics with them.

The main problem with soty now is, don't give hope to people that didn't even have a shot, now that we know soty is picked based on is it thrasher branded now we know that Sheckler and Nyjah didn't have a shot, but to just be silent and let everyone assume they had a shot is what's not right

Nyjah is a rad skater tho, he just took a different path and wanted to support his family. Back in the late 90s early 00s competions were huge and there was a group.of skaters that really only skated contests and thats what they did. Times just changed and nyjah was a kid back then at the very end of it but he still doing it that way. Im not a nyjah fun but i can respect the path he took

Thrasher magazine made my childhood. I couldn't wait to go to the magazine shop in the mall to get the newest issue ( and probably to look at the covers of the dirty magazines too lol). My childhood room was covered from the floor to the ceiling with cut outs from the mag. And then we would use the adds to make stickers.

Nyjah the last 5 years has been the absolute goat. Nobody is really that close either (Yuto and Ishod honorable mentions). But Nyjah has killed the streets a lot harder than any pro the last 5+ years. Winning loads of top contests and creating the parts he released in ‘22. It’s nothing short of mind blowing. And he can do everything, he’s not just rails, he’s been gifted at every aspect of street skating (gaps - nearly bs flipped el toro and got closer than Shecks, manuals, ledges, lines, etc.). Dude can do most of the tricks Tyshawn does but the same cannot be said the other way around. Tyshawn would struggle to do a single trick from my Nyjah’s last part. Nyjah could do at least 50% of his. Nyjah doesn’t skate transition and it’s about the only style of skating that he isn’t the absolute best at. Tech ledge tricks and super high pop ledges are the only street things I haven’t seen Nyjah do. But some of the handrails he hits he has to pop insanely high, it’s not like he doesn’t have crazy pop

Gary saying TJ tricks can only be done by a few doesn’t make sense as Nyjah tricks also can only be done by a few but the level of eating shit doesn’t compare equally between them. SOTY needs to be someone else judging that has nothing to do with what they done for that company or group etc. In other sports there’s professional bodies to undertake the judging and awards but this wouldn’t work in skateboarding now.
Thrasher is a business so I understand but it’s clear most skaters aren’t aligned to Thrasher’s criteria.
