I remember seeing this in the theater back in '04. The tension among the audience in attendance was palpable during this scene. Thrillers like this are so rare, especially with the action genre being minimized by superhero movies.
That last part hits hard. I'm sad to see the erosion of the summer action movie.
We have so many fake heros today because we don't have any real ones - today...
And - perish the though - a new and original story to tell!!
this classic this year is 20 years old.
"You open that trunk, they go inside it."
The way he lowers his voice and calmly hits Max with "You open that trunk, they go inside..." is chilling. Cruise was amazing in this movie!
I love the "I hit a deer" moment. Especially because later in the movie him and Vincent see a couple of Coyotes crossing the road in the middle of the city (beautiful moment in it's own btw) and it confirms that wildlife can be present in the City.
Fun fact, that scene with the Coyotes wasn't scripted, they just happened to see them while filming and the director incorporated them into the movie and it relates really well to the story of the two main characters. Vincent as a dangerous predator mostly unknown to the police and surrounding residents and Max as a creature completely out of place in a strange world IE a coyote in a city. This movie is such an underrated gem.
Yes, there are coyotes and foxes in Los Angeles. Up in the canyons, hills and mountains of Los Angeles, there's also bears and mountain lions.
Coyotes live in greater concentrations inside L.A. than outside it. Pets are a primary food source and edible trash is everywhere. They're doing VERY well.
Wow I didn't know that the coyote scene wasn't scripted. Comes to show that great films in some weird way are given great scenes for their own right to be immortalized.
So do libtards
I lived in LA for 18 years, I saw coyotes, racoons, skunks and opossums on a regular basis.
"You open that trunk, they go inside."
Goddamn, Vincent was ready to kill them.
Also the policemen got a call informing a murder that Vincent commited.
This line is also a testament to the writer's talent. Short and punchy just like the character who delivers it.
and i was really hoping to see some dead cops. i was dissapointed
Yea at that point I was worried about the cops 😕
Ha short and punchy
@Sriram get in the truck
Thank you for that first line, I replayed it about 5 times and couldn't understand what he said.
The absolute hardest thing to believe about this situation is the fact that premium gas was only two bucks a gallon!
In California, no less.

Do you miss Trump yet

Yeah gas ⛽ is over a 5dollars now

Goddamn. Michael Mann made sure Vincent was ice cold. Tom Cruise *killed* this role.
Cops had no idea how close they were to death
That is what America needs, Vincent. To off all the libre earles. Fat man, Jazzman, club guy, abortion DA, those are all libre earles.
@@haylobos8261 what is wrong with you
@@hugodl9073 That is what the movie is about. lol! Vincent is a holy man. Which is why his hair all white. And he talks about things like society is falling apart. And he has come to get the sinners. Vincent acts like its Max's fault if he can't get the officers to leave while its 100% his own fault the car is damaged in the first place lmao
Just like a boss.
He was just giving Max the opportunity to save their lives. If Max had said "you know what? Your way is fine" Vincent would have killed them and carried on, no problem.
@elbow drop on a concrete floor No it was just a good way to motivate him because killing two cops in the middle of LA would be far more troublesome obviously than avoiding it. However he was going to do it vs get caught. There were no issues of taking responsibility for his actions, he doesnt care about his actions. He genuinely sees nothing wrong with anything he does as he barely puts any value on human life. Psychopaths dont feel a need to avoid acknowledging they were the cause of something because they are at peace with what they cause. Only people who would feel guilt over what they do feel a need to shift blame lol.
Well, Vincent didn't know that Max was going to park directly under the window of his mark. So his mark falling on Max's car was unforeseen.
Hands down one of the most underrated movies of all time. I was on edge the entire time.
Absolutely makes me wonder why Tom Cruise didn't do more movies like this.
Tom cruise may be batshit crazy but the man delivers some great characters
Absolutely. But then again only a crazy person can become someone else convincingly
what makes him crazy?
@@kangtheconqueror8238 His Scientology cult following and his weird outbursts.
Crazy ? For someone who kills people for a living, he's very calm and well mannered. He is focused on his goal which is collecting his money for the job he contracted to do.
@@andrewcannon5319 you do realise theyre talking about the actor tom cruise, not the character hes playing in this film
“I’m pulling you over because your windshield’s smaaaashed”. Coolest cop, love it.
Normally it's step out of the car from 14 feet away
What really made this movie was also the lighting. Most of it is filmed at night and the light cast on Cruise and his haircut just further accent how dark and callous he is. The entire lighting throughout the club scenes, the nightclub dance scene and everywhere else casts Los Angeles in this sort of "doom and gloom" scenario. Brilliant production and directing.
Disappointed that the situation wasn't resolved by anything the characters did, but got bailed out by sheer luck.
Yeah. Definitely a bit of an anti climax but necessary for the plot
I hear you, it’s kinda disappointing. But on the end I think is more realistic. There was no possible excuse for that situation, the cops weren’t buying any of this, which is realistic, and anything the characters did had a highs risk of being unbelievable. Sometimes you get bailed out by just dumb luck.
You can't talk your way out of any situation with the cops. Realistic scene.
@@daniduc then it should have been written differently.
@@robertsandberg2246 then omit the scene or rewrite it. In a movie where the character relies on wits and skill, it’s unacceptable to just rely on luck.
Mann, Cruise, Foxx. Every detail to perfection.
I got to hang out with Richard T. Jones (the black cop) at the Final Four in Indy in 2000 when my Spartans beat the Florida Gators. He is a really good dude. He bought all our drinks that night while were hanging out at Shula's in the downtown Marriott. He plopped down his credit card on the bar and told the barmaid "let me know when it gets to a thousand (meaning dollars)."
perfect cop portrayal... we can't give you a break, and we MUST ruin your entire night. (radio calls in for more spicy event) ...ok, take it to the shop. bye.
They got a quota to fill
For real. Their whole job seems to be to ruin your day. If not your life.
Especially true regarding ruining his night, because it was the passenger side of the windshield that was smashed and the driver's side was relatively fine to be drivable, and yet the police was going to impound the cab anyway. If it wasn't Tom Cruise's assassin character and just some random passenger, they just made Jamie Foxx's character inconvenience a passenger who only lives a half mile away for an issue that can be solved with dropping the passenger off and then heading straight to the taxi station to go off duty until a windshield replacement occurs.
A taxi driver isn’t supposed to have passengers with a vehicle in that condition, and there’s no way to make sure the driver will do the right thing considering that he already wrongfully picked up a passenger and lied to the cops. Simple as that.
In fact, by following the rules to the letter, these cops could’ve caught a hitman and saved a hijacking victim. This scene really doesn’t make the point you want it to make.
@@georgeofhamilton hey George, loosen up and enjoy the ride ok?
From start to finish this movie was brilliantly directed and both Tom and Jaime should of got oscars for their performances.
The Oscars are not merit based they are political.
I agree
One of them got nominated, so not bad

That's the cab's computer. He lifted it earlier in the movie.
Those gas prices are wild
Tom Cruise at his best...
Agree. Tom is a very underrated actor.
Wow, whoever did that shooting just saved those officers lives
Ironically, the police were responding to the shooting/murder that was "actually" caused by Vincent lol
I've watched this movie many times, and this scene is still as tense as ever!!
A south central deer…lol
... "shots fired" ... probably Vincent shooting someone earlier in the movie
Dark Tom ... I'd love to see him in more of these roles ... Jaime is even more amazing ... What a great movie
I always wondered what's the point of saying a dead body, just saying a body is pretty self explanatory since a live body would be a person.
It’s a useful distinction. People refer to their physical bodies as their “bodies” all the time.
I guess there's also unconscious body
A friend of mine actually did end up the victim of Joel Rifkin, known as "the Long Island Serial Killer." Her body was in the bed of the pickup. Only he wasn't pulled over- he had been drinking, and hit a telephone pole across from a substation of ... I think it was Brooklyn police. Feel free to look it up. Took me a while to process the tragedy.
I knew she had been following some Indy (alternative) bands. I mean, either as a roadie or groupie. At some point, her activities led her to New York, where J.R. got a hold of her. In a sense, her sacrifice helped to lead to his capture. Her name was Tiffany Bresciani. She was smart, funny, beautiful, and a talented poet.
Very interesting and thankyou for sharing. May your friend Tiffany rest in peace.
That's terrible man.. sorry for your loss.
I Remember that guy. I thought Rifkin was pulled over for driving his pick up truck with commercial plates on a parkway. No commercial vehicles allowed on the parkways. And he had her body in the back of the truck covered with old carpeting.
You might be right though. I think he was on the side of the road now that you mention it. He killed at least 17 women. Whatever many of these women's faults were, they were loved by friends and family. Thankfully Rifkin was found out and captured.
I almost thought the active LISK cases just got solved recently. Crazy how two serial killers were operating at the same time in Long Island. Though the other one is still out there. Glad your friend's family got the closure they needed. Very sorry for all your losses.
what does that have to do with this
So tense. Love it.
This movie had one of the greatest interactions between actors in history.
Damn, Benji working overtime with getting Ethan out of a jam again

Tom Cruise did a pretty good job in a negative role in this movie even though he is not the type. The other one I can recall is “Rainman”.
Yeah but that's a real redemption story, so he to start out as a prick
Also Tropic Thunder
Such a great movie!
I really love a good film like that.
Police should always use their discretion and let the battlers of this system go with a verbal warning
When gas was less than $2 a gallon lol
The 2 actors made this a great movie
look at those gas prices!
I love Cruise’s character and all, but the fact that he thought he was going to smoke both cops no problem is pretty insane. I would say.
There were a lot of bystanders standing right nearby Vincent's gonna need a bigger trunk. The rest of the movie would be him just Mozambique Drilling his way through a wider and wider radius of LA.
People would not stand around for that it’s Los Angeles

Why don't they watch the video BEFORE writing the descriptive title?
It's not "in the truck" but "in the trunk"!

Excellent 🎭
This is great but the nightclub scene is mind blowing!!!
Windscreen magically fixed by the end.
at 1:49 you see Vincent fidgeting in the back before he gets out. looks like he's taking his pistol out of his holster before he steps out, as then you see him holding it on his side.
1.83 for gas? That’s insane!
You cut right before the best part
i think cracked windshield is more important than shots fired
Wow, look at those gas prices.
Tom Cruise's most well-performed role IMO
Have you seen Magnolia? He was, in my opinion, even better in that. Highly underrated although he was nominated for an oscar for that role and won a golden globe for it.
"A South Central Deer" pmsl!
The luck of the hollwood
The most badass part of this scene is the gas prices.
$1.83 for gas in CA ?
*trunk
I can just imagine how Vincent would have dropped those cops. BAM! BAM! one head shot each. The first cop would have never known what hit him. The second cop would have barely cleared his holster when he died. He probably would have waited until they opened the trunk to catch them off-guard while they were shocked by what they saw.
The most drip Tom Cruise had
Pennywise 2003 "from the ashes" in the bench 🤘
Vincent did not have to kill two cops because they had to leave immediately to check out two other guys he had killed. In the world we are living in today, that seems perfectly reasonable to me.
Wait, is the windshield no longer cracked? 2:32
Nah, it’s just out of focus.
I like the $1.83 gas we won't ever see that price again ever.
Those gas prices 🤤
All Max had so say was that he went outside after taking a shit and discovered the blood and damage to the windshield. Or he could've said he hit a deer when he was in the suburbs an hour ago.
"you don't have the trunk space" Pragmatic.
A South Central deer lol 😆 😂

The most important question, are they any deers in south central? 😂
$1.83 a gallon for gas. Oh have times changed!
I think the only flaw in this otherwise perfect movie is the old "We got another call, so you can just go" schtick. I mean, I'm sure it happens in real life, but it happens too much in movies.
Still... a great film. I can forgive it that little scene for how incredibly good the rest of it is.
It happened to me...didn't have a body in the trunk, but we were 2 seconds from getting arrested when they got a juicier call.
It happened to me once. Traffic stop and the cop had to roll for an emergency. Gave me my stuff back and left.
@@GerardoHernandez-fq1mx I know it happens, but when it happens in a movie it just seems like lazy writing. Like, "Ooh, how will they get out of this? Simple! The coppers got another call. Done and done."

You open that trunk, they go inside.
