One of the directional sirens that are located on the outskirts of the metro.

I live in New Orleans and I need to enjoy learning about the weather. We suffer from hurricanes and tornados. You always make learning a pleasant experience! Good luck and 73. KG5OBD

This is a Whelen 2810, 28 being the 2800 Series and 10 being that it has 10 400Watt Drivers in it.
These are pretty nice and can be quite loud, though the 2900 series is better and more efficient. The sound your hearing is one of 6 pre Programmed Sounds in the Controller (the silver box close to the ground), these also have a Voice capability to use pre Programmed or live PA. The controller also houses Batteries that the siren runs off of and still runs off of in the event of a power failure.
If you'd like anymore info feel free to ask, you have a Happy Holidays!.

I got a question, how do you know what series Whelen sirens are? Like how do you identify the model number?

The 2700- Silver supports on the Head and the Stacks are stacked like the later models
. They can have any number of panels. The 2700 can range from 2720, 2740, 2750(Most popular) and 2790
. The 20,40,50& 90 are the number of cells 2, 4,5 and 9.
      The 2800
. Very Similar to the 2700 but uses Fiberglass throughout the horn and the Screens are bigger and tend to hiss with the tone the models change to 2801-2810 (last 2 numbers indicate the cell count 01=1 and 10=10.
The 2900’s are a lot better
with the 2900’s you can pull the drivers out without having to take apart the whole siren
. The screens are also smaller eliminating the Hissing.
The Firehouse Series- These are less expensive 28 and 2900’s small towns can purchase
they don’t have voice capabilities and can only go up to 5 cells.
The Vortex- A great Deal for 24V
.. they have a 6,000Ft coverage radius and don’t have voice capability
The 4004 - a Vortex with a upgraded rotator and voice capability
. When installed correctly the oscillating rotator should always stop facing north and rotate the other direction.
The Hornet- Small single 400W driver that gets okay range (2,200Ft) but small towns like them.
      The 2800

    Nice Low A Major Tone :0) (I’m a musician)
Why does it do that additional short wind up before it winds up a 2nd time and stays before going back down?

That's 4000 watts of Warning tone power. When the PA is used, it's bumped up to 5000 watts. Very loud things

The sirens aren’t scary and annoying. They’re just a part of Oklahoma and tornado alley, and if you live in a siren system like theirs, the sirens suddenly become a part of you.
