  • Welcome to my channel! Here you'll find folklore from across the British Isles. This is an old ghost story from the coastal village of Porlock in the English county of Somerset. Here we see a local priest challenge the phantom to a riddle contest when traditional 'laying' (exorcism) does not work.

CHALLENGE: There are a few riddles towards the end of this video. Why don't you try pausing after they're read out and see if you can work them out! The riddle dual reminds me of an old Appalachian ballad called, "The Devil's Nine Questions". (Yes, I know those old ballads trace back to Britain.) :)

Thank you for creating this. I'm born and raised in Somerset and have started a family project with my kids to explore the folklore of Somerset. I've heard a very similar version this. Just the riddles were replaced with the ghost challenged to eat a holy wafer! Thank you for helping keep these stories alive.

It's nice to see Somerset getting the recognition it deserves! The south-west of England is such an overlooked part of the country (besides Cornwall, being one of the Celtic nations means it gets special treatment from Americans)

I have ancestors from Somerset on my mother's side and ancestors from Cornwall on my dad's side. I have yet to go there but I am anxious to see them in person. As you say, they are regions of England which are often overlooked yet the history and culture are so rich.

Nice one Duke. Got myself an old copy of A General History of the Robberies and Murders of the Most Notorious Pirates by Captain Charles Johnson. Although most people believe it was actually written by Daniel Defoe but he wanted to protect his sources. Most of what we know about the most famous pirates comes from this book.

This video inspired me to learn and solve some german riddles today. I`m furthermore motivated to learn more about the history of riddles. May treebeard help me in this endeavour.
