The traction control chokes out the throttle too much. Turn it completely off by holding down the traction control button for about 6 seconds :)

it kicked in when he was taking corners mainly, if it was off it would have just spun and understeered into the ditch

That’s partial off mode
To turn it completely off,
1.Turn on the engine
2. Dab the brake pedal 3 times
3. Pull and release parking brake 3 times
4. Dab the brake time 3 more times
Proceed these 4 step within 30 seconds.
You should see the picture of car slipping flashing on the gauge cluster, that means the traction control is completely turned off.
All Toyota cars from 2004 can be turned off with this procedure, except for hybrid.
