  • One of three cog railways in Austria, all of them steam-powered.
Climbing to the summit of Mount Schafberg south of Salzburg since 1893, the scenic Schafbergbahn has steep gradients up to 26% (260 ‰) and offers stunning views of all the surrounding lakes in the Salzkammergut region. The cog railway is home to two generations of steam locomotives, including the original coal-fired rack tanks from 1893, which only can push one coach, and the more modern Swiss-built locomotives from 1992-1996, which can push two wagons uphill. These SLM locos were built in Winterthur and designed by the famed Swiss engineer Roger Waller. They make use of his "modern steam" design principles, including one-man operation, light-oil firing, welded boilers, roller bearings, etc.
This footage shows the hard working locomotive Z. 11 (built in 1992) at the scenic halfway point Schafbergalm, working hard while pushing the train uphill, and then again huffing and puffing while breaking the coaches during descent.

Your videos are great. it's very professional. Natural sounds. Flowing water, birdsong and other natural sounds are captured realistically, making it feel like you're truly immersed in nature.
