Judy Garland - Stereo version of "Look for the Silver Lining"

- Our friend and audio guru Mark Milano has shared his amazing new stereo version of Judy Garland's gorgeous performance of "Look For The Silver Lining" from "Till The Clouds Roll By" (1946). Thanks to today's technology, he was able to split the vocal and the music into separate channels. It's a joy!
Judy pre-recorded the song on October 2, 1945, then filmed it on October October 16, 1945. She was pregnant with daughter Liza Minnelli at the time and although it's been assumed that the setting was created to hide her pregnancy it was, in fact, how Broadway legend Marilyn Miller performed it in the original show (Judy is playing the role of Ms. Miller here).

Judy was truly her most beautiful and happiest here! She just married Vincent Minnelli and was pregnant and she thought at last I am loved and have someone who will take care of me personally and professionally. (This was after the 10-years of overwork and bullying from the studio and her mother from 1935-1945) she is truly happy and rested here and it shows! 😇🤗😳♥️

Most people think Vincente did it this way to hide Judy's baby bump but this was the way it was done in the Marilyn Miller Musical and He did it this way for His Baby's MoMA! 🙂

I’m fascinated every time I watch this greatest of all time, actually live the song as she sings it.. Her eyes sparkling and genuinely searching for that silver lining. The woman was and still is, peerless because what she does with a song, no one can compare. Also, she is pregnant with her daughter Liza Minnelli, who is also great but she still cannot do what Her mother can do.. Judy is just flawless here. Ok okay! I’m bias so shoot me! lol ❤😊
I just ordered the double dvd of Easter Parade just to be able to watch what I feel is the greatest biography of this amazing Great artist; PBS’ American Masters: Judy Garland By Myself. It aired almost 20 years ago and if anyone hasn’t seen this biography, will absolutely love it! Isabel Keating narrates a lot of the story while impersonating Garland’s speaking voice which is almost eerily spot on. She played Garland on Broadway with Hugh Jackman. It’s sort of heartbreaking in the bio when she talks about the death of her beloved father, Frank Gumm. I often wonder how would her life been if her father didn’t die when she was young and starting her career? Sadly, when he died, her mother stepfather and MGM dominated and used her as a cash cow screwing up her childhood and and growing up. In the biography she talks about how the most awful thing that ever happened, was the day her father died and Judy says “ The most awful thing that happened is the day my father died. Then I thought, now, no one is on my side”. She summed up the rest of her life and with such accuracy.. I got choked up because Ms. Keating nails Judy’s speaking voice and it’s almost as if Judy was speaking.
I love this beautiful and classic song sung perfectly by Judy Garland! The best version of this song ever! I love this! Both the song and Judy Garland are just beautiful! This is pure movie magic!

This was the concluding scene in a Judy Garland bio documentary. A perfect ending that captured one of her stellar moments, in which her star power shone brightly even as her personal life was becoming more difficult. One could only become enamored of her beauty and charm.

Does anyone know if Rhino or Rhino Handmade ever released a compact disc soundtrack of this film, the film musical biography of Jerome Kern, TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY or the Rogers and Hart film musical biography, WORDS AND MUSIC? I mean MAME w/Lucille Ball’s vocals (terrible and no extended version of “Bosom Buddies”), GYPSY w/Lisa Kirk (now she is superb) and Rosalind Russell’s vocals (very hoarse) but no re-issue of extended soundtracks of THE MUSIC MAN, CAMELOT or SOUTH PACIFIC is a true crime and MAME and GYPSY soundtracks are best left as painful memories. Does anyone know??
Unfortunately no. Rhino never did a CD of either Clouds or Words. At the time they were cranking out the soundtracks (late 1990s), they said that they couldn't create soundtracks because too many of the original recording sessions hadn't survived. This was due to the fact that in the late 40s the studio was moving from recording on optical film to magnetic tape. Some recordings simply didn't survive. :(
TheJudyRoomVideos: Thank you but I remember that Sony released CLOUDS and WORDS. Not as well as some of the others like Rhino’s THE PIRATE, but it’s something. Since Angel issued extended versions of OKLAHOMA!, CAROUSEL and KING AND I (including reprises, dance and ballet!) could that happen for. MUSIC MAN, CAMELOT and SOUTH PACIFIC? Thank you.
The Sony CDs were recorded directly from the film soundtracks, much like the bootleg LPs of the 70s/80s. A few had one or two bonus tracks taken from playback discs, but unfortunately expanded and remastered soundtracks for Clouds and Words hasn't happened. With today's technology, it would be easy to use the multiple available elements (surviving pre-recordings, film soundtrack, playback discs, MGM Records versions) to create fantastic new editions. However, Warner Bros. isn't interested in that at all. They're content issuing copies of the Rhino discs on their "WaterTower" label. The bad thing is that most were done in the 90s and are in desperate need of new remasterings.
