I almost quitted guitar culture for a long while and so I came to know the sad news of John's departure only yesterday. I had the privilege to watch him play 3-4 times here in Italy, and once the honour to have dinner together. While I confirm the image of an outstanding player and composer, a generous and honest performer and a true gentleman, I also share the unexpected and deeply questioning gift I had to emphatize with his inner inquietude which he let resonate with mine, when talking at dinner, from music to life and fear. I was in my 20's very confused and searching. He got bitterly ironic and some how intolerant towards my doubtful approach to the mystery of art and life. And yet he gave me a settling inspiration and left a fatherly taste in my heart.
I thank God for the gift of your life. May He welcome you in His endless music, Sir John!

John was such a humble and friendly person, very available.
It was so common to have him spend time with the audience after his concerts, or allowing you in his changing room. He could easily let you try his guitar. He used to listen to young musician and was very interested in their productions.
It was no surprise at all that you could go with him to the pub for a beer or even at dinner after his concerts.
That was the tipical atmosphere at the Folk Studio, the very small concert theater where he was at home in Rome.
But I had dinner with him in Pescara (a more remote city of Italy), after a concert where very few people came to see him. We, the guys of the Folk Studios, where familiar to him, and he was more than happy to see us there and went together to have dinner with the organizer of the event. That was just normal life for an artist such John Rembourn. If you get surprised or scheptical maybe you didn't have the chance to meet him personally.

Watching him and Mr Grossman talk and rehearse was a real pleasure, and I love the way you feel your way through the songs together. Thank you for sharing this insight into how you spent time playing. John was in my all-time favourite top 10 guitarists (along with you, of course!), and a huge inspiration for me to play (badly), and aside for his incredible talent as a guitarist had one of the most calming, beautiful voices. Thank you Mr Grossman, I look forward to catching one of your shows in the next year - please make an appearance in London soon!

I was really very sad to learn John Renbourn's death. He was one truth guardian presence for me - with regretted Bert Jansch - in the learning of the folkguitar in the eighties and I have discorver earlier his magnificent sensibility in jazz compositions. I see him in concert in Toulouse in the south France about 1985 with Tony Roberts and Jacqui McShee... Today can I only share the sadness of all those who miss and remember him thinking back to the magnificent years of the English folk revival. Thank you Stefan for this nice post.

I was massively disappointed not to get to see him on his final (?) tour with Wiz Jones. I had a ticket for the gig at Milngavie folk club nr Glasgow. When I got there I found they'd been ousted by a pipe band rehearsing for the World Championships a couple of days later! I was devastated when he dies a few months later.

A wonderful innovative and inspirational player, composer and teacher . Together with Bert and Davy Graham these were the exceptionally gifted musicians in London in the late 60s and 70's who got me to pick up the guitar and struggle to play my first chords and fingerstyle arrangements. I learned fingerstyle from tablature that came in one there records. Never expected to see a tab book tucked inside. Never forget "Luke's little summer" by renbourn. Great stuff!!!

Really, really lovely clip, but so sad about John. John Renbourn, Bert Jansch & Stefan Grossman provided the soundtrack to my late teens/ early twenties and I was lucky enough to see all 3 (at different times) in the 1970s. I was even part of a group that had a lesson from Stefan in Cambridge in (I think) 1972. I saw John & Stefan together a couple of years ago at the London Acoustic Guitar Show (which I guess was what they were rehearsing for here).

Sadden by his death and gladden that we these and other videos, CDs of his music to carry his spirit into many minds long after the body is gone.

I saw Stefan and John play a concert in Hobart, Tasmania.... must have been nearly forty years ago... can you remind me with the dates? Love your work, so much joy to so many...
