  • Out of the blue I saw a Ward’s Sea King aluminum boat pop up on Craigslist. It was a 1956 12ft in great shape for its age. These rarely pop up too! & low price.
    I could not pass this up because I was heartbroken that the 1954 Johnson Sea Horse would not work on the boat we restored in past episodes!
    (See the 1967 Starcraft video series I made. That boat turned out AMAZING!) Anyways, turns out the Starcraft would not accept a short shaft motor, I wasn’t aware transom size mattered, well now I know! 🤦🏻‍♂️
    So this boat will get all polished up like a WW2 plane, it’ll be a fun project.
    Again, “Thanks For Tuning In!” 👍🏼

    I’m glad I found this video, I have a 1960 sea king 12’ and love it for my lakes in Maryland, great video and keep fishing!

      Thanks Adam, I’m a big fan of lake fishing too. The SeaKing I had was just a dinghy, kind of unstable. I’m waiting to get my motor back from the shop so I can fish in the StarCraft boat I restored here a while ago. 👍🏼Maryland has some great lakes!

    Looks like the one my dad had back in the sixties. We had a 5 hp Sea King outboard for it. That little 2 cylinder engine would get it up on plane. My brother and I used it to pull us a skim board back in the day. Nice Boat!

    OK, the boat dolly is brilliant. My 14' 1960 LoneStar King Commander has a mid 70s Johnson that I would love to switch out to a more period correct motor. They just look so much better that way.

    Got an old sears v hull that same size that I just finished turning into a tiny bass boat. Put a 15hp Merc on it. It no joke can get into the tightest and skinny water that none of my buddies can get to. Been fun.

      @@westcoast_johnny no. I missed out and it was sold. I’m still hunting for another one like a Starcraft, Alumacraft or such. I’m working on 2 vintage campers now so maybe when they are done I’ll pull the trigger.

    Nice boat! I have a 1960 Alumacraft 12-footer with the same exact 1954 Johnson Q D 15, and when it is trimmed correctly, usually in the third Notch from the bottom, I am easily able to hit 21 22 mph! What a great setup! I know this is a late post but I was just curious to see what you were getting out of it speed wise! I've also found out that the original weedless prop that comes with those Motors are the best

    • @westcoast_johnny
      @westcoast_johnny  Před rokem

      Hi Jon, thanks for the reply. Unfortunately when I took the boat out it was really wobbly and my wife was terrified. I ended up selling the little boat, but I kept the Johnson motor hoping I’ll find a more flatter bottom aluminum boat. I’d love to do that so I can truly enjoy the motor.

    • @jonnun7713
      @jonnun7713 Před rokem

      Hello again! You know the 1954 Johnson 10 horse is the only year that they made that particular engine. You can tell by the raised seahorse emblem on the lower leg those are the only models! But let me tell you this, those old Motors are more like a 15 horsepower than a 10! They get up and move and they are so powerful it's not even funny! I take my 12-footer out with that exact motor, and by myself it is rather scary.

      Sea King was made by Montgomery Wards, the cowl tag on the right side of the transom is probably missing. If you send a pic that will help. Email> Westcoast_Johnny@Yahoo.com 👍🏼 thanks for stopping by!!

    • @westcoast_johnny
      @westcoast_johnny  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Adriana, canoes and kayaks were not required to have “hull identification” numbers until after 1972. Yours must be vintage, it sounds cool.. is it aluminum? 👍🏼

      @adrianaarismendi4098 Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, aluminum. We took it out on the water over the weekend and it had only a tiny bit of water coming in. Looking forward to cleaning it up and spending more time on the water!
