- Hello everyone! This week I (and a bunch of other folks) sang The Ballad Of Sara Berry from 35mm: A Musical Exhibition! This one is certainly not for the faint of hearts, you’ve been warned!
This one is a long time in the making (I feel like I say that about everything recently)! We have A FULL ENSEMBLE! We have AN ANIMATIC! A full production over here in the annapantsu household. Thank you all to everyone who helped out -- Sedgeie, Snazz, Will and Cami! You’re all superstars!

Something I noticed. In the bottom left of Sarah's prom hallucination, you can see Julie in a wheel chair smiling and clapping for Sarah. You would think that, being Sarah's manic fantasy, that Julie's presence would be completely absent or at the very least sad/upset that she lost. This shows that Sarah's greatest desire was to be loved by everyone, including Julie.
That's making me cry a little...

Meaning the father "raised" her on his own. Think of it like Katara's necklace, From Avatar The Last Airbender. It's even similar in design, which I'm sure is a coincidence. But no, I'm pretty sure her mom is dead in this. She is also always wearing the necklace, that should be a sign that it at lest has sentinel value to her.
I went to school with a girl deadass named Sara Berry, and she did this in theater class one time and people went NUTS.
I know you mean sung the song or whatever, but I like to imagine her just murdering 8 people in your theater class.

Sara is obviously a very sympathetic character in spite of the horrible thing she did, but imagine what poor Julie is going through. First she had to suffer the trauma of losing her leg in a horrendous accident, and now she's been scarred with the PTSD of witnessing her peers get murdered at a prom that was supposed to make her feel better. That girl is gonna be messed up for life, and she did nothing to deserve it.

Sympathetic? The literal first line describes her as the stereotypical bully in background and the song describes her spiraling down into Delululand until she cancels her friends' breathing subscriptions.

The only line that kind of describes her like that is the one that calls her a popular bitch and that doesn't neccesarily mean she was a bully(bitch can be an insult or a compliment). The rest of the lines just show her as the stereotypical popular girl who is hot and rich.
It's interesting how the lyrics are "you taste the silver" referring to the prom queen crown, but silver also means second place, so it doesn't just mean she "tastes victory" but she also tastes being runner up which she can't stand. I also love how the "check Sara, choose Sara" part sounds like "poor Sara, poor Sara"
Also I’ve gotten a cut on my mouth before so I know this. Blood kind of tastes like metal so it also be referring to that but I thing your theory is better
I like to think that Check Sara, choose Sara could also be a subtle nod to checking on her to see if she was ok, aside from representing how hard she tried to win.

I theorize the singing voices are kind of like narrating thoughts in Sara's Berry's head. Its obvious they're on her side, and they're painting it from Sara's perspective, as if she was the one in the right. A singer says "What a bitch" when Julie rightfully calls the cops, and the singers also sing "You taste the silver Sara, you taste the crown" encouraging her like "You can just taste it. You NEED it, you thirst for it." At times you can tell they're trying to be the narrators but are clearly biased.

it could actually be argued that the entire play is only about Sara Berry and her life, including those close to her. However, there's not enough connection between the songs of 35 mm to officially say so.

Out of context, I doubt you'd be rooting for a mean bitch who went insane and slaughtered people because she wasn't getting what she wanted, even though she had shitty family forcing her too. The narrators of the song are painting it in a way to get sympathy points for Sara or make it appear as if she was never wrong. Just because she's the protagonist with narrators cheering for her, many felt inclined to do the same.
Unless of course you were genuinely rooting for her, which I respect your opinion.

Add on top that she was so desperate to win a popularity contest that she murdered six people and tried to kill one more over it, and I think I can say she fits the archetype, with some Carrie vibes on top.
@@dredgenwar2375 Dude, that's exactly my idea for a sequel; horror movie or indie game, Sara busts out of the loony bin and goes completely off the rails, murdering her way across town to find the crown and potentially kill Julie. The protagonist - possibly Julie herself (which would just add to the horror factor considering the disadvantages a one-legged person would have in evading a mass-murderer) or maybe someone else - has to make things intentionally harder for Sara by maybe setting traps around town and help the cops find her. Thoughts?

I've heard that tragedy in literature is characterized by the conflict between two things that simply cannot both exist at the same time. For instance Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy through the conflict between Romeo and Juliet wanting to be together but being born as children of warring families. An immovable object meets an unstoppable force so to speak. This is actually true in the case of Sarah Berry. She desired with her entire being to be Queen, but the crown must go to Julie. The manner this is narratively resolved is what a tragedy is about. So this is indeed a tragic drama.

At first, I thought it was ironic that Julie survived. However, a review of this video has led to an alternate interpretation that I needed to get out there.
Julie never really asked to be Prom Queen and, as far as we know, she had absolutely no part in her own campaign. While she was flattered and did not oppose the idea, she never actively sought the crown.
If you pay attention to Sara’s hallucination at 4:00, Julie is right in front of the stage, cheering for her. From what little we know, this seems to be entirely in character for her. Despite not being “popular”, a majority of the student body went out of their way to do something nice for her, which wouldn’t have happened if she weren’t a generally nice and likable person.
Is it possible that, even after Sara’s mind shattered to the point of committing mass murder, a part of her still recognized that none of the blame could truly be placed on Julie herself? In the end, she was just another bystander in over her head. She wasn’t actively running for Prom Queen, but instead was being pushed toward it.
If other people hadn’t made the decision for her, it is entirely likely that Julie would have supported Sara instead. Perhaps THAT is why Julie Jenkins survived where none of the other candidates did.

I always thought of it as the necklace represents how she is trapped being perfect because of her dad. The necklace is like a collar trapping her there, but people look at it and think it's pretty. It !ay look pretty, but really it's trapping her.
The necklace looks a lot like the necklace Katara wore in Avatar the Last Airbender. I suspect this was intentional!

As someone who is studying psychology, I think because of Saras mothers death is what drove her father to be so mentally strict with sara. The reason I think this is because sara touched her necklace when her father mention her mom. Sara was only crazy when her father mention her mom and when he said "there's just no future for a princess at prom". I feel like Sara only wanted to make her (dead) mom proud of her by being who she was, popular, pretty, and prom queen. These are just my thoughts
I'd also add a huge shit ton of pressure into the mix. The prom and her father are just the straw that broke the camels back.
And given how murderous Sarah turned out and how delusional she became, I'd not be surprised if her father putting more pressure on her is another delusion of her's

Something I noticed, the voices go from “ oh she’s amputated” and “ pity vote loser” to “ oh no poor Julie!” And then “ love love Julie!” The voices are kind of like the students, first they all like Sara and are on her side, then they seem to switch to liking Julie

I think the voices are in Sara's head since they're clearly biased and even rooted for Sara when she got her crown. Not to mention the voices clearly didn't like Julie calling her a bitch when she called the cops and saying she's a pity vote loser.

Could be "What a BITCH!" referred to Sara as she murdered Patricia, Raquelle, Anne, Mariana, Quiara and Eunice to get the crown (and the love of her Daddy - remember he was pushing her to be the Queen and saying that there was "no hope for a PRINCESS at Prom!"), or it could be Sara's internal thought calling Julie a bitch.
actually i heard it the complete other way around, i think the ensemble is on sara’s side/sara’s internal voice, and the “good” things they say about julie are mocking, like “love love julie” is more exasperated, and then they go into singing about each individual death excitedly, and call julie a bitch for calling the cops, etc.
It's interesting at 2:33 when she spiraled into her hallucination it could've easily been Julie belittling her, the girl that the narration is describing to be the enemy/villain of the story. But instead the girl that comes out of the mirror who mocks Sara Berry, bullies her even, to the point of tears, is Sara Berry in a prom dress. A lot of the time it's more easier for us to see our flaws more than our strengths, but with the pressure from her father to be perfect those views of her flaws are amplified. In the final hallucination at 4:00 when the student body (including Julie), she bares a look of relief almost, it's like she has to be genuinely being praised by other, because it's the only thing that saves her from the negative words she hears at home, mentally and physically
i just now realized that the whole "down on your knees before the queen" also means another thing because julie was the only one who couldnt get on her knees. she couldn't and didn't submit to sara's massacre because she couldn't "get on her knees" since she lost a leg.

I've watched many reactions to this song, and was immensely disappointed by the sheer number of people who didn't get just how sad this song is. I was recommended this song for it being a nice inspiration for a horror story and this isn't a horror story. This is a tragedy.

Yes it’s a tragedy. Especially nowadays where this happening for real is a serious possibility schools planners need to consider. But to be fair serial killer teenagers rampaging through a prom dance has been a popular horror trope in the US for 50+years.

A failure to do so would mean Sara is somehow lacking in the social skills department and so a black stain on the family name.

So I have a theory on who the six people Sara killed are. They aren’t some random people thrown in just so this song can have an acronym gimmick.
As we all know, Sara has deduced that seven people are responsible for her inability to be prom queen, and so she goes hunting for them. However, Julie has survived. Most say she hid herself, but if Sara wants to win so bad that she is willing to kill, I believe she would turn the school upside down in order to find her. Therefore, by the time Julie is the only one left on Sara’s list, Julie has to be an insignificant threat to Sara, which is to say, she no longer has the ability to be prom queen.
That leads us to the six unfortunate victims. Who are they? Some may think they’re also fighting to be prom queen. However, that seems unlikely by all accounts. Julie is noted to be taking the lead, so Sara can only be in the runner up or last spot. In the former case, Sara would only have to kill Julie; in the latter, she would still have to kill her. Since Julie survived, the prom queen candidates theory doesn’t seem right. And obviously, they aren’t ordinary students either. They would have to be related to either Julie or Sara. Perhaps they are julie’s close friends, who have spread the message of julie’s accident and let the rest of the students pity and vote for her. Or they could be Sara’s rivals, who have discouraged people to vote for Sara, or even dragged some people from supporting Sara to supporting Julie. One way or another, they are the ones directly allowing Julie to receive the most votes. You can say they are direct supporters of Julie. From the song, we know that Julie’s immense popularity is because of the students pitying her. Sara knows it too. By killing all of julie’s supporters, Julie’s popularity level will return to approximately the level prior to the accident, which is average, if not less than that. So after Sara’s sixth murder, it doesn’t matter if julie’s dead or not. She wouldn’t have any way of beating Sara anymore.
By the way, many people have answered the question regarding why Sara didn’t kill Julie first, but I’ll write the answer here as well just in case: if Sara kills the person who is practically the prom queen right away, the school will immediately panic and call off the prom, so Sara would definitely not have a chance of being prom queen
Nice idea. Except i think she's just gone bonkers because she kills the girls in order to spell "prom queen" with their first name's letters. She's gone into full magical thinking I think.
Interesting theory however i don't think its entirely correct. Sara didn't think things through when ploting the murders "some girls are rational but Sara was not". Prom night would have been cancelled if 6 students when brutaly murdered, especially when one having her pieces spread around the school. I believe Sara just couldn't find her and as prom got canceled due to the murders she just broke in and stole the crown while in a state of hallucination before getting arrested.
I always thought of the girls as being Sara's cheer squad and her clic. They left her behind" so it would make sense in her head that they deserved to die too

Ok, so here's my theory that came to my mind after watching this animatic multiple times:
Sara's mother has died. She and her father are both still traumatized about her passing, though, her father a slight bit more. With Sara being a spitting image of his dearest, beloved wife, he pressured her into gaining the same successes as her mother, such as being prom queen. Her father is her last living family member, of course she needs his attention and affection.
You see the necklace in 1:14? I guess this isn't just a necklace, it was her mother's. Sara inherited it from her, her mother herself got it for her prom. The same second the look in her eyes says "I'm aspiring to be prom queen, I'll make mom and dad proud". Here, her striving and desire can still be considered as healthy
Now, look at 2:35: The "Sara" drawn in red isn't Sara. It's the image of her mother speaking to her, as I said, Sara is a spitting image of her. Recently, she was confronted with the misunderstanding of her closest friends, even of her boyfriend, and her father again stated she'll have no future, if she doesn't become prom queen. That's what sent her over the edge of Insanity and created an image of her mother on her prom night in her head, to give her advice.

"There's seven reasons this crowns not good as got" (2:59) is an interesting line no one's been talking about, it's means that even IF she got away with killing Julie and won the crown , Julie's friends or maybe Sara's old friends who switched to Julie's side will ruin Sara's night which was originally supposed to be Julie's, it's not good as got because Julie's friends are there to ruin it making Sara look bad.
Okay so most people I’ve seen so far have been just chocking Sara off to being just insane which although is true I think there’s a bit more depth. Sara isn’t really just an insane girl to no reason. Her descent into insanity has many factors.
The first factor is she’s used to being popular. She’s always been at the top of the social ladder, and now some amputee girl is getting more votes all because of pity while Sara has been putting triple the effort to guarantee her spot as queen.
The next factor is she’s an impressionable teenager with a father that says that “Life is a prom,” so this means if she doesn’t become prom queen then she’s useless. If she’s useless then she’s a disappointment, and she very obviously doesn’t want to disappoint the only parental figure we see throughout the song. Her father appears to see that life is popularity contest, so she was raised to have the same view. She also has been popular her whole life, so she has always had people reaffirming self-worth.
This contributes to the final factor of Sara pushing everyone away in her pursuit of that silver crown and sash. This mean that with no sense of personal self-worth, and a lack of friends to reaffirm people her self-with that she only has her father to please. So Sara did everything she could to avoid becoming a disappointment just to have a person to reaffirm her self-worth. This led to her murdering her competitors to win the crown.
Anyway, take this with a grain of salt this is just my idea of Sara’s motive, and the push that shoved her over the edge.
Idk, I think insanity is the greatest issue here. Mass murder is not something a person can be so easily pushed to, not even an impressionable teenager

I think its a combination of that and Sara already being seriously mentally ill, probably due to her parents most likely being emotionally abusive and putting too much pressure on her. She was holding on because of the people around her,when she lost that, she snapped. The prom was the straw that broke the camel's back.

There are two details I just adore every time I rewatch this.
One is at 1:13 when Sara reaches for her necklace. It's almost like it's symbolizing a collar around her neck.
The other is at 4:00. Julie is alive and well, clapping for Sara. It felt oddly sweet that in her perfect world, she hadn't killed (or attempted to kill, anyway) Julie to get the title of Prom Queen.
YEAH the second thing is so good!!! like she wouldn't have done it at all in her perfect world she would not have hurt anyone. I like to think there was some history between Sarah and Julie childhood friends perhapd who stopped because of Sarah's dad maybe 👀

heres how i think the whole seven people got into the story. As Sarah become more secluded n "Socially Dead" by her BFFs, they and her supporters split and went to vote for other candidates til Sarah was seventh in line because of votes or because there was 8 candidates, therefore 7 people threatening her path of happiness and success. by the time she killed all the others, by going for her facial expression when she went looking for julie, she considered her already crossed off because either she saw her flee or took the disappearance of the "Favorite" to be a sign of surrendering the crown to her.

What I find the most disturbing and sad about all of this is that people like Sara Berry actually exist in real life. Teenagers, just kids really, that got so much pressure on them to excel at everything. To always be the best and never lose in anything, not even something so trivial as a prom queen competition.
Most kids in that situation also doesn’t have a great life at home, just like how it’s obvious in the song that Sara’s father never once tried to comfort Sara, never tried to get her professional help once she became depressed and (eventually) increasingly unhinged. In fact, he very clearly implied that if she *didn’t* become the prom queen she would forever be a failure in both his and her mothers eyes. Add the fact that they *never* again mention Sara’s mom outside of that line, which may imply that she’s dead or otherwise completely absent from her life, and it’s obvious that her Fathers opinion means a lot to her.
Had her dad just been a better parent, had her friends just been there for her or had the teachers just steeped in when one of their students quite obviously wasn’t doing well then the tragic events that followed could’ve been avoided.
So I guess what I’m going for with all this is that this song (brilliant as it is!) should be taken as a cautionary tale. There *are* a lot of Sara Berry’s out there and we should do our best to help them deal with their issues. If we don’t, well, then I fear that the song will ring all too true...
