- Making an amazingly super simple, easy knife. You can do it with relatively simple tools in a relatively normal shop. Here's how it's done. Bladesmith Walter Sorrells shows how to make a compact, functional neck knife -- i.e. a fixed blade knife small enough to hang around your neck, put in your pocket or throw in the glove box. The knife is all steel -- in this case 01 high carbon tool steel. No handle scales, no epoxy, no pins or screws, every step shown in detail.

Very clever with the pencil in the drill! LOL
You can use a dowel and valve grinding compound to do this. Just round the end of the wood dowel apply grinding compound in finer grades until smooth just as he did with the pencil and green scotch bright.
I think my problem would be lining up the moon creates instead of random spacing.
While it’s not super simple, I have started powder coating knives that I make from Pops house steel. It’s high carbon and I don’t want them to rust so powder coating really fits the bill. And thank you for turning me onto Pops. They’re steel is awesome and so is their service.
Dear Walter, that little 1-30 grinder will function better if you move the platten behind the belt making it flush with the belt. This removes the oveling , also known as slack belt grinding, thus making the grind flatter to the edge. Note: Walter already knows this..

Cool, simple project! Would be a great way to use scrap cut offs from other knife builds. A great, cheap, effortless way of de-scaling steel, is an overnight soak in grocery store vinegar. The 5-6% acetic acid eats it up. Pretty much wipes right off. Works great for the mill scale on hot rolled steel as well. It can be reused numerous times.
I have watched 100s of hours of knife making videos and I still watched this one. Walter’s presentation is always on point. 👏

Walter, this is a great project. I love my Crkt neck knife it is great for opening mail, boxes from Amazon mine was kind of rough when new but my diamond stone turned factory edge in to a thin mirror edge. That cut great and saves my big folder for serious social intercourse. Not it has a serious edge also. I just may build one of these to give to my daughter, for EDC.

I want to make knives so bad I built that wooden jig to help me make knives cuz everything is so expensive anymore I can't even get thay same grinder from harbor freight
How would a guy force a patina on 01 tool steel?
Lemon juice or other acidic juices will give a grey/black color. Urine will give a brown color.
I have had more than one person ask why the site won't allow them to see anything beyond a picture of the Luna and give a well written thought of the day type of thing when they tap on the pictures. Though I couldn't answer, and I know they wanted to see about a purchase, I said I would do what they feared and ask the man himself...
Lool when you buy all the tools its 500$ for a little knife +the time you spent. . .
this thing is so small you can use a hacksaw and a file. don't dimple the handle, harden the blade on charcoal, you're talking zero cost.
It's about the fun and cool factor. You can make a knife any size doing the exact same thing. The 1" belt may be the down fall of a big knife though. But a file will clean every thing up.
