My life has been consumed by packing, moving and cleaning for the past two months -- I was going nuts! So I took a day off, and drove 45 minutes into my new "backyard," aka Death Valley, to explore an extremely remote and nearly inaccessible abandoned mine camp. Because it's so hard to get here, the camp is relatively well preserved and full of interesting artifacts. What an adventure!

Horse hair mattress. You can still get horse hair mattresses. Today, a good Swedish horse hair mattress can cost anywhere from, $5,000 to $20,000.

camel or horse hair would have been too expensive for miners, most likely it was made from kapok fibers which were very cheap at that time.
That looks like coconut fibers. They used to make the old VW air cooled beetles seats
with it too....
When I was your age some 35 years ago, I'm not sure I would have made that hike. Sooo much easier to just sit back and watch you do it on a 50" tv screen.
being basically isolated with only cats your vids really do help with the dull boredom a good distraction. Thank you

That rusty thing you said SOLD about are two of the burners out of that second stove. Kinda looks like you will be doing a lot more from DV now. That's great because it takes a lifetime. I've been doing DV for 25 years now and still have a long ways to go. You could almost say I've done Death Valley to death but not even close.

The Old West. Not much left anymore except a few crumbly buildings, dusty mementos, and legends. Lots of legends, though not all of them square with the facts.
Those dishes with the wheat pattern look like ones that supermarkets in the 1950s and early 1960s gave away as premiums. For every so many dollars you spent you would be allowed to pick out one piece of stoneware. They were very popular with housewives of the time.
Sara seems a whole LOT happier today than when she recorded the previous video. Maybe the unpacking can wait! 🤣 Thanks for the video.

The nice thing about Propane Servels is they still give credit towards a new any brand propane fridge. Not bad considering theirs leaked back in 50’s and had a recall placed on them for life.😀
Your little Mineshaft at the end right behind the cabin is a root cellar where they would keep meats and other food cool in the summertime

Love those signs that say "no services next 72 miles" one of my favorite ways into Death Valley is a gravel road from Lone Pine, off Hwy 395, that says "no services next 92 miles". Enjoyed your commentary, did you say Chewbacca Pubes? That kitchen table is a classic '50's table.

That vertical Mineshaft if you look those metal tracks used to have an elevator with a great big steelhead unit in the motor on top so that you can go up and down you didn't climb that ladder

Old rust metal piece that swiveled looked like it might have been gas stove burners, had small holes as a hint.
Gas store or perhaps some kind of heater.
That's what they are. Burners for a stove.

Enjoyed the video. was fun to see the old Servel reefer.we had one when I was a kid in the 50's
You'd never know it but this was only the base camp at 2200'. The tram bucket you found is at the ruined base tower of a 1400 foot tram line that starts behind the buildings, going westerly up to 2700'. Up at that level prospects and adits traverse the mountain for a few hundred feet but they didn't find much based on the small tailings. Looks like they did the six-tower tram line all for naught. They must have made some of their money back from proceeds from the mill.

Looks like gas burners, from something, possibly the fridge. The 2 knobby ends, were adjustable air gates.

Great video 👍 ! Loved the views, amazing ! You should have a "go " bag filled with emergency items, that could fit in a small back pack and still be light. Stay safe 😘🙏
Those plates have what they call golden wheat pattern on them. If I remember correctly when you bought a certain brand of laundry soap there was a plate in the box. Stay safe and keep well hydrated on those hot desert hike.
I was in Death Valley on Monday coming back from Vegas and the weather was perfect.

I noticed you frequently come across small rooms dug in to a dirt bank with shelves in them and you seem at a loss as to what they are. They are powder magazines for storing explosives.
Back in the 70's during a military engineering exercise rebuilding an old mine into a boy scout camp, we discovered an abandoned powder magazine- still full blasting powder!
Well...some are and some are just storage for about anything you don't want to get too hot...including food. Digging back into the mountain only a short distance can yield a nice,
cool storage area for blasting supplies AND food storage.

@@mtacoustic1 Just so everyone knows, old powder is extremely dangerous. Old TNT crystalizes and in that condition is very unstable. CALL AUTHORITIES AND DO NOT TOUCH!!!!
@@richardsmith9609 From what I understand, there were a few extra "holes" cut in certain spots in mines. That is, once someone cared enough to think about it. Those "holes" were places some poor overheated soul could sit and cool off a while.

Park service blocked the entrance to the mine because they don't want anyone disturbing the balrok living far below. They can get pretty grouchy, you know.

Holy crap we had a kitchen table very similar to that one during the 60’s, haven’t seen a table like that on ANY Urbex videos of abandoned houses, wow, brings back memories!!

My family had a kitchen table just like the one you found with the spare leaf. All my meals as a kid in the 1950’s were off of it. Like many closed mines and industries a lot of money was put into them right before a market change or other factors closed it. Looks like the housing was up to date for that time.

That mattress was stuffed with Spanish moss from louisiana. My wife and me are fans from louisiana, we've been enjoying been enjoying and thumbing you up for a couple years. Keep up the good work and be careful

Hooray Sarah you made it to Ashford Mine Camp. I visited this place in 2007, February. I camped at trailhead overnight then hiked next morning. Yes it’s a brutal hike but the reward is great. Glad to see everything looks same as 2007.

That fiber was very common padding, we find it in the older furniture we reupholster.
Old roads ,washes ,and gullies. Oh my! That was an interesting trail to follow and now you've lost a mic in the Middle of Nowhere.
Some day an intrepid hiker will pick it up and wonder about it as it is placed on the table in the cabin for safe keeping for posterity. Great video Sarah. Stay well.

Amazing that the sheep can find nutrition on that rocky terrain. They are beautiful. Advise people to go early in the day. Nothing worse than running out of daylight in a place likee that. Never know what may delay your return down the mountain.
Lesson of the day: Not all rock cairns are trail markers. Could have been a mining claim boundary marker.

That Servel symbol is a gas flame.
I had a Servel in our camp till a couple years ago untiI I couldn't get burner parts anymore.
Thats part of the gas stove otherwise called the burner.

I was kind of shocked just how many people had visited the cabin. I guess no matter how remote you think you are, someone is gonna find you!
Gas stove burners, so glad to see you somewhere in the Valley where I have been. One of my fave photos is at that " 72 miles to service" corner.
Thanks for your adventures and inspiration. I looked up Ron Hill and saw a racing article from 1967. Maybe the newspaper article was from that year.
Those fridges were considered dangerous. Kids used to lock themselves in when playing hide-&-seek and perish. Make sure to stay outta those fridges. lol
Your so right I forgot that. Because of that locking handle they had if you pulled it shut behind you, you'd never get out, hence the magnet doors we have today.

That broken saucer in the cabin with the wheat sheaf pattern on it? I remember that pattern from my childhood. I’m 73. I remember it as the pattern for the reward dishes in a grocery store. I think they did that reward dinnerware thing in the 50’s and 60’s. So cool to see so much history preserved. Thanks for taking us!

Don't forget that beauty of a ghost town Cerro Gordo, right up the mountain, in your backyard. I'm sure the new owner would love to say Hi to his neighbors down in the valley. He's a really good guy trying to get the town back up as a living historical site.
He has a very good CZcams channel that I just found.
I just saw an episode on the weather channel of the guy he was injured and I think that trail the town he broke his hip and had to spend a few days outside in the desert but he survived and his rescued by his son and the highway patrol

I'm sure some guys would be interested in buying your gun cabinet, excess tools, and other miscellaneous? I'm envious of your workshop/crafting building. I also wish I had a storage shed like I saw on your property. All I have is an old falling down garage.
Considering her location is in " the middle of nowhere." would probably be better and safer to set up at a flea market and have a lot more foot traffic to check out the sale items.
