- Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #585
Date of adventure: 10/31/21
My life has been consumed by packing, moving and cleaning for the past two months -- I was going nuts! So I took a day off, and drove 45 minutes into my new "backyard," aka Death Valley, to explore an extremely remote and nearly inaccessible abandoned mine camp. Because it's so hard to get here, the camp is relatively well preserved and full of interesting artifacts. What an adventure!

You know you are old when the appliances in an abandoned mining camp is the same type your mother had in her kitchen while growing up!
19:20
Horse hair mattress. You can still get horse hair mattresses. Today, a good Swedish horse hair mattress can cost anywhere from, $5,000 to $20,000.
Either Rick is camera shy or he has outstanding warrants 😂. Just kidding. I’m just jealous that he’s able to hangout with Sarah 😂.
🤣😅
I love how it feels like we're on a field trip and Sarah is our teacher
And I have a crush on teacher.😊🥰
Thanks for going with SaraH..I'm Praying for SafetY and FunN " John.s
It's the glasses.
Who used to pose NAKED!
@@johnsimko4920 thank Google
Probably an old Camel or Horse hair mattress. What a great place. Thanks for the quick tour.
camel or horse hair would have been too expensive for miners, most likely it was made from kapok fibers which were very cheap at that time.
That looks like coconut fibers. They used to make the old VW air cooled beetles seats
with it too....
When I was your age some 35 years ago, I'm not sure I would have made that hike. Sooo much easier to just sit back and watch you do it on a 50" tv screen.
being basically isolated with only cats your vids really do help with the dull boredom a good distraction. Thank you
The bighorn sheep alone would have been worth the hike. The old camp was a real bonus..
They’re awesome
That is the most “well endowed” mannequin I have ever seen. LOL
I thought I would be the only one to notice that.
Ditto.. I was like wow.. What is this..
I am female and thought the same thing! Lol
Momma Quin😜
I thought I was the only one who noticed! I lost a good 5 minutes after I saw it.
Since that was a piece of quartz, below a mine, it probably was gold!
That rusty thing you said SOLD about are two of the burners out of that second stove. Kinda looks like you will be doing a lot more from DV now. That's great because it takes a lifetime. I've been doing DV for 25 years now and still have a long ways to go. You could almost say I've done Death Valley to death but not even close.
Good call Larry!
Till death do you part?
@@ebc371 Could be. I'm going back again in the spring.
yes, you're correct.
The Old West. Not much left anymore except a few crumbly buildings, dusty mementos, and legends. Lots of legends, though not all of them square with the facts.
Those dishes with the wheat pattern look like ones that supermarkets in the 1950s and early 1960s gave away as premiums. For every so many dollars you spent you would be allowed to pick out one piece of stoneware. They were very popular with housewives of the time.
Sara seems a whole LOT happier today than when she recorded the previous video. Maybe the unpacking can wait! 🤣 Thanks for the video.
Omg that kitchen table. Those are so collectible now.
The nice thing about Propane Servels is they still give credit towards a new any brand propane fridge. Not bad considering theirs leaked back in 50’s and had a recall placed on them for life.😀
Your little Mineshaft at the end right behind the cabin is a root cellar where they would keep meats and other food cool in the summertime
"freakiin' old! Probably from the 50's!" Haha! Yeah me too!!!
No shit Lar, in same boat as you
@@bergy210 same boat.............
Hell my boat sank, 1956😅
You're not old, you're a classic!
This is true to the Wonderhussy spirit of adventure. Thanks again for taking us along.
Love those signs that say "no services next 72 miles" one of my favorite ways into Death Valley is a gravel road from Lone Pine, off Hwy 395, that says "no services next 92 miles". Enjoyed your commentary, did you say Chewbacca Pubes? That kitchen table is a classic '50's table.
Girl, You are a breathe of fresh air to those if us living vicariously ! Thanks
Im glad you had a friend go with you.... as remote as the place was... there could be a lot that could go wrong..... Common sense goes a long way.... having (2) people is always smart....
I could talk with you and never be bored !!
Thank you Sarah have a great day
gas stove manifold. good stuff as usual
That vertical Mineshaft if you look those metal tracks used to have an elevator with a great big steelhead unit in the motor on top so that you can go up and down you didn't climb that ladder
0:32 WOW ... that mannequin is stacked
🤣🤣🤣 I noticed that as well!!
Time to head up to Cerro Gordo for a revisit! Death Valley Days it is!
Hello aldamias
Hello dear
👍🥰♥️🤙 another wonderful Wednesday with the fabulous wonderhussy ThankYou much!
Good hike! I'd never make it now at my age so thanks for tanking me along! Those rusted can's were tobacco cans .. snuff is in the small round tins. 🤠
Old rust metal piece that swiveled looked like it might have been gas stove burners, had small holes as a hint.
Gas store or perhaps some kind of heater.
That's what they are. Burners for a stove.
You ran into the desert bigfoots rock cairns , he never walks a straight line lol
"Chewbacca's pubic hair"
LOL! That is a good one
yeah like Chewie had shaved his pubes & saved it for years, how many years of pubic hairs would it take to stuff that Mattress ?? Keep in mind he's .... a big hairy guy
😂😂😂😂😂
I died 🤣 on that one
It very nice to see all the scenes...I'm sitting at home resting..Thanks" SaraH !"! John.s
Enjoyed the video. was fun to see the old Servel reefer.we had one when I was a kid in the 50's
You'd never know it but this was only the base camp at 2200'. The tram bucket you found is at the ruined base tower of a 1400 foot tram line that starts behind the buildings, going westerly up to 2700'. Up at that level prospects and adits traverse the mountain for a few hundred feet but they didn't find much based on the small tailings. Looks like they did the six-tower tram line all for naught. They must have made some of their money back from proceeds from the mill.
Hello fellow miner. :)
14:35
Looks like gas burners, from something, possibly the fridge. The 2 knobby ends, were adjustable air gates.
Love your roving commentary as you explore. You are a gem.
Great video 👍 ! Loved the views, amazing ! You should have a "go " bag filled with emergency items, that could fit in a small back pack and still be light. Stay safe 😘🙏
Those plates have what they call golden wheat pattern on them. If I remember correctly when you bought a certain brand of laundry soap there was a plate in the box. Stay safe and keep well hydrated on those hot desert hike.
I was in Death Valley on Monday coming back from Vegas and the weather was perfect.
I’ll have to put that hike on my list
Love getting to join you on your adventures. Thank you for sharing Sarah!
WONDER HUSSY...........Thank You Very Big.........from your friend in Koh Kong Cambodia
I noticed you frequently come across small rooms dug in to a dirt bank with shelves in them and you seem at a loss as to what they are. They are powder magazines for storing explosives.
Back in the 70's during a military engineering exercise rebuilding an old mine into a boy scout camp, we discovered an abandoned powder magazine- still full blasting powder!
Well...some are and some are just storage for about anything you don't want to get too hot...including food. Digging back into the mountain only a short distance can yield a nice,
cool storage area for blasting supplies AND food storage.
@@tomfrye9037 Having worked underground for 15 years you are exactly right. It could be nice and cool in a magazine.
@@mtacoustic1 Just so everyone knows, old powder is extremely dangerous. Old TNT crystalizes and in that condition is very unstable. CALL AUTHORITIES AND DO NOT TOUCH!!!!
@@richardsmith9609 From what I understand, there were a few extra "holes" cut in certain spots in mines. That is, once someone cared enough to think about it. Those "holes" were places some poor overheated soul could sit and cool off a while.
Chewbacca’s pubic hair lol. Never thought I would -ever- think about that, but now I have! Thanks!! Lol
Park service blocked the entrance to the mine because they don't want anyone disturbing the balrok living far below. They can get pretty grouchy, you know.
Looks like an awesome adventure! I couldn’t imagine doing that in the Summer! Thanks for taking us along.
Brian : her home is inaccessible 😝
Water is the most powerful force on earth.. It can move mountains, sink continents.
Holy crap we had a kitchen table very similar to that one during the 60’s, haven’t seen a table like that on ANY Urbex videos of abandoned houses, wow, brings back memories!!
That was fun. My favorite part was the freezer was marked "Frozen Foods"😂
Can't believe you remember Kenny Shoes. Masks suck. Thanks for a great outdoor adventure.⛏️🏜️
Thanks for reminding me about Kenneys shoes. I can almost smell the leather, or pleather?
I keep thinking that Jim West and Artemas Gordon will appear at any moment.
My family had a kitchen table just like the one you found with the spare leaf. All my meals as a kid in the 1950’s were off of it. Like many closed mines and industries a lot of money was put into them right before a market change or other factors closed it. Looks like the housing was up to date for that time.
Sarah, of all the You-tubers I follow, you are my favorite! I’m stuck in the house most of the time and I really look forward to your adventures! Be safe, be happy!😁
Hello dear
I'm so glad the weather is much cooler for you now
Say you're going the old fashioned way we call it the heel toe Express
You are looking Good these days. Thanks for the Tour.
one the qualities I enjoy of Sara, her willingness and grit!
That mattress was stuffed with Spanish moss from louisiana. My wife and me are fans from louisiana, we've been enjoying been enjoying and thumbing you up for a couple years. Keep up the good work and be careful
Seriously? Stuffed with Spanish moss? I love Spanish moss but wouldn’t want it that way.
@@PicoAndSepulveda yes that was big business for the cajuns back in the 30s and 40s. They sold it to furniture manufacturers back then. So yes seriously
Hooray Sarah you made it to Ashford Mine Camp. I visited this place in 2007, February. I camped at trailhead overnight then hiked next morning. Yes it’s a brutal hike but the reward is great. Glad to see everything looks same as 2007.
Yes Rick helping wonderhussy whath the hiking hope it goes well 👍👍🤞🤞
That fiber was very common padding, we find it in the older furniture we reupholster.
Old roads ,washes ,and gullies. Oh my! That was an interesting trail to follow and now you've lost a mic in the Middle of Nowhere.
Some day an intrepid hiker will pick it up and wonder about it as it is placed on the table in the cabin for safe keeping for posterity. Great video Sarah. Stay well.
You are always in the middle of nowhere!?! Do you ever go to the edge of nowhere? How about the other side of nowhere?? ✌️😝🤪😎 ha ha Happy Trails 👍
Too much fun ! Thanks for sharing . You are a gypsy footed wonder for sure
Amazing that the sheep can find nutrition on that rocky terrain. They are beautiful. Advise people to go early in the day. Nothing worse than running out of daylight in a place likee that. Never know what may delay your return down the mountain.
Lesson of the day: Not all rock cairns are trail markers. Could have been a mining claim boundary marker.
The first metal part you asked us to guess about Looked like burners from one of the gas stoves. Did I win? 😆
Thank you, and Rick, for the journey and vlog! It was a good trip and I am glad that you both decided to be safe on this journey! I enjoyed the sights and wish you another great adventure soon! Best wishes and regards! 🧧🌅
What a great place to visit👍 Hi from Gloucestershire uk😊
About to be out there exploring and filming on the topic of mining ourselves next week. What timing!
Holy Cow! You really earned this Thumbs up. That was one hell of a climb. Now I know I don't want go to that place but I get to see it here.
That looks like the top burners for one of those stoves
That one was well worth the hike in! Thanks WH! Hope that did your chee a lot of good!👍🇺🇸
That Servel symbol is a gas flame.
I had a Servel in our camp till a couple years ago untiI I couldn't get burner parts anymore.
Thats part of the gas stove otherwise called the burner.
You beat me too it.
Love the compressed drive up sequence! Do more of those! Love from Michigan
Love the adventures good luck with new home stay safe
Thank you wonder Hussey for finding the time to make us a video for Wednesday and it was a great one I love these exploring of the minds thank you from the old retired guy👍👨🏻🦳👍🥱 member take a day by day🤩
Thank you so much for sharing this awesome video of the history of a minor camp sis wonderhussy have fun be safe sincerely Suszie 💜💜🌞❤
Another great adventure of a mining camp!!! Bighorn sheep was a bonus on this trip!!! Take Care and Stay Safe Wonderhussy!!!!
Whew Huss what a trek! That logbook is proof there are a lot of crazy-ass people who like to hike in the desert to nowhere in the summer heat (August??) 🔥🔥
At least you waited til it cooled off on Halloween 🎃
That Chewbacca bed!! Yikes!! Can't believe YOU TOUCHED THAT!! 😲
Clink 🍻
I was kind of shocked just how many people had visited the cabin. I guess no matter how remote you think you are, someone is gonna find you!
Gas stove burners, so glad to see you somewhere in the Valley where I have been. One of my fave photos is at that " 72 miles to service" corner.
Thanks for your adventures and inspiration. I looked up Ron Hill and saw a racing article from 1967. Maybe the newspaper article was from that year.
Those fridges were considered dangerous. Kids used to lock themselves in when playing hide-&-seek and perish. Make sure to stay outta those fridges. lol
Your so right I forgot that. Because of that locking handle they had if you pulled it shut behind you, you'd never get out, hence the magnet doors we have today.
As a former Las Vegas adventurer now living in the lowcountry of South Carolina I am reliving many hikes and vicariously enjoying new ones through your videos. Keep up the great work!
“Phone” at 15:00 is 2 burners for the gas stove.
That broken saucer in the cabin with the wheat sheaf pattern on it? I remember that pattern from my childhood. I’m 73. I remember it as the pattern for the reward dishes in a grocery store. I think they did that reward dinnerware thing in the 50’s and 60’s. So cool to see so much history preserved. Thanks for taking us!
I’m glad you take someone with you. I can imagine it’s so nice to go alone. The desert is a fickle mistress. I enjoy your videos and I want you to continue. Thanks for your desert associates. I appreciate them too.
Kind of looks like horsehair - they used to use that to stuff mattresses with.....looking forward to your desert discoveries...your videos really helped during the shutdown, and now am hooked on your adventures. Please be careful, and thanks for taking us with you!
Wonder Hussey, don’t make it a habit of walking down washes. Do you know what can happen, just be careful. You have people that love you and don’t want you to get hurt. All is good all is well!
Chewbacca‘s pubes,
you are so funny Wonderhussy ! I love you ❤️
That was the best 😅
Don't forget that beauty of a ghost town Cerro Gordo, right up the mountain, in your backyard. I'm sure the new owner would love to say Hi to his neighbors down in the valley. He's a really good guy trying to get the town back up as a living historical site.
He has a very good CZcams channel that I just found.
I just saw an episode on the weather channel of the guy he was injured and I think that trail the town he broke his hip and had to spend a few days outside in the desert but he survived and his rescued by his son and the highway patrol
That was so fun!! Thanks for taking us along💖💖
Very cool exploring WH , glad you had someone with you on that rough trail. 👣
Grabbing the hot springs book. You make it look awesome.
Great video Sarah jane, oh and the landscape just getting there awesome 👍.. be careful out there beautiful good luck and enjoy your back yard..
Nice, right on your backyard. That was one almighty hike up in them rocky slopes! Thanks for another nice adventure, along with your friend, Wonderhussy!🙂😎☝️👌👍
It has a certain ring to it, I live in Death Valley! Glad to see you had company on a remote hike, well done Rick for keeping up!
Thanks for taking us along with you. As far as "the compound" goes.....Why don't you and your sister (sorry don't know her name) Have a giant "garage sale" in your quasant (sp) Hut building? I'm sure some guys would be interested in buying your gun cabinet, excess tools, and other miscellaneous? I'm envious of your workshop/crafting building. I also wish I had a storage shed like I saw on your property. All I have is an old falling down garage.
Considering her location is in " the middle of nowhere." would probably be better and safer to set up at a flea market and have a lot more foot traffic to check out the sale items.
What a adventure. Loved that hike and exploration of the old mining camp. 💕 Mary & Fred
