What they are most likely doing is kanto was to introduce liko and roy, paldea was to develop roy, Galar was to develop liko, next region will be for roy region after for liko. Just wait to the next region and next hero Pokémon most likely lapras they should be for roy.
To be fair Goh never felt more than a Clemet to me... maybe a Cylon; but nowhere near a Brock.
Brock was dual protag vibes to me. Ash had the adventure but Brock carried the parties hearts.
Goh was just that distraction from Ash that Journeys never needed. Honestly preferred Choe to Goh as she was not a distraction.
Despite having put Horizons on pause after Caps backstory explaining the Tacklers name (I just could not find a consistent place to watch that was not full of digi viruses).
I can say that Liko's plot point is needing the time it gets. roys dream is currently Shallow (wanting to be a pokemon league winner; like the games "hero"); but I do not see that being all there is to him.
His Pokepartner goes on an evolution journey ending in ghost Fire right? So I figure that is meant to show that Roy is about indomitable spirit; so as Liko gets further out of her element and is forced to adapt; He will rise to the challenge and be able to support her all the way. But the moment the story swaps because he has finally found an evolved goal; then I expect the show to 180 and focus on him.
Because I think Goh taught them that trying to focus on 2 people and not one at a time is the wrong move.
Roy just has not been given his chance to shine; by series end He will and then Liko can chill in the back ground of his grander adventure. 1 in the spot light at a time like a Duet; until the time for the merging stories to come together happens.

Honestly, Roy and Liko's relationship works well. The story, in a grander scheme, works better imo. I think the anime is more focused on the team - the Rising Voltacklers - rather than the individuals themselves.
I really like the take the Pokemon Animé made: The story is great, the characters are lovable, and the antagonists are threatening.

I seem to remember just a short while ago fans were asking if Roy wasn't overshadowing Liko. Now the situation is inverted. People need to be patient with this type of storytelling. He'll get some episodes focusing on him again real soon.
They're not on equal footing like we thought back then.
That was a momentary surpassing. Roy was catching more Pokemon and he would run forward taking action first while Liko did so after.
This will always be the Liko Show with the rest of her team. Not to say that she won't be overshadowed sometimes. But Even when he does stuff now, it'll just be seen as side character progression and not protagonist progression.
Still that's better than nothing 😣

I think Liko is the primary protagonist and I think Roys story will be intertwined with Likos. I like him though. He seems more interested in battles than Liko. Though I really like Liko and Dots relationship more than hers and Roy

Roy would likely overshadow Riko in the arc soon in april. the School arc is a place to battle.
I think once hes done with the adventure he will like become a pokemon trainer. He wants to solve the mystery behind that ancient pokeball (This is Roy Dream for now). Riko is the one that will be the pokemon adventurer since it will end up being her dream. Its quite obvious since she doesnt have one@@dylanchua5197

i think he will in the school arc thats coming soon. Riko is the battle type so i see her studying more rather than battling but Roy its another story. i think Roy will overshadow Riko in that arc as long as they are in school.
I think I have a few theories on why Roy is getting downplayed in Horizons.
1) Is that Roy wasn't originally written into the series when it began production, which would explain why he wasn't in the first couple of episode (Goh was introduced in the first episode of Journeys). They might have added Roy later because they needed a character for young boys to relate to.
2) Perhaps Roy wasn't intended to be marketed as the dual protagonist with Liko. Unlike with Goh in Journeys, where at least half the episodes were focused on him, Roy seems to act more like Ash's friends from the past series. Maybe fearing that the older fans wouldn't like the male character being sideline to the female character, they decided to market Liko and Roy as equal protagonist to appease the older fans, not taking into account that Roy wasn't written to be an equal to Liko.
3) Maybe after seeing how popular Liko was compared to Roy, the writers for Horizons started to shift more of the story towards her, instead of giving them both equal screen time.
4) Or maybe we are getting ahead of ourselves and we might get to see more Roy focus episodes in the future. It felt like yesterday that the complainant was that Roy was getting too much of the focus instead of Liko.
Personally, I rather have Liko be the main character with Roy being sideline, because I rather see a female character be the protagonist, which is something new, instead of another series being lead by a male character.
On a side note, I think if anyone is the Chloe of Horizons, it's Dot. Not in terms writing or character, but because from the looks of the marketing, it seems like Dot is supposed to be part of a unofficial trio between Liko and Roy. Kinda like how Chole was treated as part of a trio between Ash and Goh.

I really feel like this situation was reversed during the first arc. Roy seemed to be doing a lot more than Liko. He got a new Pokemon before Liko and there was a focus on Roy befriending the Wattrel. He also was more focused on trying to get stronger. Liko, on the other hand, seemed a bit passive and unsure of what to do. Only once the plot got really got going later on did the focus shift away from Roy to Liko in my opinion. Even now though, Roy is still set on finding the black Rayquaza, so that's something. And since the whole group is focused on one mission right now, it's kind of hard for Roy to be doing anything else, so of course the focus would shift to Liko who's directly related to the immediate plotline. I personally haven't felt anything wrong with direction of the characters so far, but I'm pretty easy to please and typically not an overly critical viewer.

the thing is Roy Goal and dream is to solve ancient pokeball mystery. I think he will eventually befriend black raquaza. i think its likely the next time they fight wont be surprise that it will be a mega evolution. Mega are returning with the new game announcement. Riko has no dream but follows Roy to see his dream and goal while searching for her own
They seem to be pushing up Dot a bit more too, it's like they're trying to do an anime version of the manga where they've got all three starter-mon kids going at the same time, and Dot at least does have something going for information gathering, and they seem to be forcing her to be the "first buddy" character, probably because it's been the boys club for so long with Ash.
I know I'll probably get some hate for saying this: Unlike some of the female led shows coming out, this one doesn't push the unnecessary boundaries, and shows Liko as a human that makes mistakes, and isn't surrounded by huge plates of plot armor.
The Horizons team seem to be trying something, get shat on for it, or start getting lost interest, try something slightly different, blow people's minds, then the audience finds something to shit on them for again.
Essentially, Roy is basically a MacGuffin for the ancient balls, hasn't displayed any shipability, and yeah... basically just the "here's a boy" character; however, they have given some good rival moments.
Of course I'm still enjoying it, I honestly enjoy Lico as the MC, and my older ass sees Friede as my insert character...
I think another problem is also because the older characters are overshadowing them. Forget them even Cap is overshadowing all 3 of the children. Tbh i think the school arc will be what shows their growth. Since we know that they will get destroyed by black Raquaza in the next ep.
I mean, even if Roy may have gotten "shafted" from the ancient PokéBall thing, he still has Fuecoco's goal to help him be like Charizard. And I do agree with you that focusing on one thing at atime is probably for the best for now, especially considering the messy execution of Pokémon Journeys.
Also, out of curiosity, have you seen The Amazing Digital Circus? I feel obsessed with that at the moment. Another also, are you getting Super Mario RPG? I've been waiting a very long time for that remake and now we're only less than 2 weeks away from having that game in our grasp!
I haven't seen The Amazing Digital Circus, but as for Super Mario RPG -- it's one of my favourite games of all time! Budget is a bit tight this holiday season, so I might just play the port of the original on my Super Famicom Mini. :) Let me know what you think of the remake!

Royboy is our joyboy that we have been waiting for years.
I knew before the anime even relesed that that liko would be the main protagonist and roy will be a companion with occasional moments when he's the focus. Theres nothing wrong with that, ash literally went through 7 generations that way and no one complained. Lets face it, liko is the ash and roy is the serena, dawn, may, misty of the group. They are both main protagonists, but the focus would be mainly on liko, same way the anime was with ash and his companions in the past generations
And no, go was never a main focus like ash was. There are episodes of go being equal or the main focus to ash like the eternamax and project mew episodes (and i expect roy to have the same treatment in future episodes) but cmon, ash was still the main guy of the journeys series.
I agree with mostly everything you said except for Goh. He was treated more of a main character than Ash was in the beginning of Journeys. In fact that was one of the biggest criticism about Journeys is that Ash felt like he was just there supporting Goh, instead of focusing on his own goal for the series. Of course by the end of Journeys Ash was back on the main stage while Goh was taking a backseat.

yeah he's good at playing off of people, he's the battler despite being considered more secondary. and i wouldn't be surprised if he gets more development when there's more chance for high-stakes battles since that's his expertise.
it's really nice to have the shojou and shonen swapped around and i think complaining about that too hard is weird imo
Its obvious, the anime is having separate arcs focused on one of the dual protagonist's goal. The pendant arc will focus on Liko, while the Paldea Academy school arc will heavily focus on Roy's battle arcs to get strong enough to catch Rayquaza.
They haven't forgotton Roy, the anime, is actually trying to wrap up Liko's arc adventure so they can shift the focus on Roy's. You save the best for last.

I think that the writers did really good job with the plot, even if there are a lot of connections to Eureka Seven anime.
That's why we need to see how things go. The season barely ended. The twist and turns might make sense once we uncover the full season.
I think it's more likely that Pokemon's anime studio is recovering from decades of Ash/Satoshi fatigue. They want to build the story around a character who is entirely different from the typical shounen protag, because it opens the story up to lots of new, untapped scenarios.
On the other hand, Roy has been getting more development in battle than Liko. He even taught his second team member before Liko. Just about a month and a half ago I heard a whole bunch of people complaining that Roy is overshadowing Liko in development as he caught watrall and got more battle training while Liko was far too passive. IMO it feels like fans are jumping the gun.
Fans need to be more patient when waiting for character screen time HAHAH
I really like both of them. I think they're great.
And I personally don't think that Liko is more akin to a shoujo protagonist just for being a girl.
And something important to point out is that each time they have found one of the six heroes is thanks to Roy. It's even possible that Rayquaza is actually leading them towards the other members of Lucius team because they always seem to end up fighting one of them when they follow Rayquaza.
And Liko and Roy are pretty interesting and fun to watch. I really like them a lot.
Both are pretty likable and enjoyable protagonists. And I know the show will make great things with both of them. And the same goes for the rest of the rising volt tacklers and the explorers too. As a fan I think they all feel like characters that I want to know more about. Which is something really good and talks great about the characters themselves and about the story.
nah she isnt a 100% shoujo protagonist there are some parts. I cant wait for the next arc which shows their growth

I actually have a theory about lucius. I believe that it's liko's ancestor.
On the topic of our boy roy perhaps he will have bigger role to play down the line. Don't know about these Japanese commenters but its too soon to forget him. What if they plan for someone to inspire him to try something else like the serena inspire chloe episode of pokemon journeys.

Just because they're focusing on Liko more, doesn't mean they aren't going to showcase Roy.
Yeah but two protagonists, you’d expect a more equal billing. Roy has just been kinda left at the wayside.
I think it's really sad when people can't get past the "boy and girl" part of characters, there's nothing stopping a guy from relating to a girl in a series, a girl relating to a guy or anyone relating to anyone. Two examples that come to mind are Uncle Iroh from Avatar or Rick from Rick and Morty, you don't need to be an older man to appreciate the relatable quirks these characters have, as exaggerated as they may be. I can relate to Ash, Brock and James the same as Jessie or Misty. Heck, even Pikachu, Meowth, Wobbaffet and the other Pokémon are extremely relatable throughout the series. So I don't know whether it's the fans or the writers that are the issue here but I don't think it should be a question of "who it's aimed at" over "how good of a story is it".

@@thatgirl9532 oh no, I’ve actually been thinking: what if Roy was “abandoned” by his parents? Like all he knows is that he was left with his grandpa and that his parents went off somewhere or maybe he did know his parents for like his toddler years but then one day they just left. Like what if part of the reason Roy wanted to be a Pokemon Trainer was so he could secretly find his parents. Like not even his grandpa knows about this. That might give like an underlying reason as to why he was kind of sad at the idea of Liko and Fuecoco leaving because maybe it also reminded him when his parents left. Idk I’m just rambling at this point but like anything can happen🤷♀️🤷♀️

Hm, fair and valid points and opinions, i can understand where people are coming from, but considering how it’s pretty clear that Liko is supposed to be the True Main Protagonist of this Show while Roy is the Secondary Protagonist and how Journeys got received, i think the current direction they are taking is understandable,
besides i don’t think it matters much, i mean just because Roy hasn’t had as much focus as one would’ve liked and expected, doesn’t mean he won’t have any focus throughout the Show,
Personally, I mostly wonder where this leaves Dot? I mean, I know she was pretty much already a Rising Volt-Tackler before the other two, but i just can’t help but to view her as a part of some sort of Main Trio alongside Liko and Roy, since she has one of the Three Starter Pokémon like they do,

In Pokemon Journeys the first half of the series focused primarily on Goh while the second half focused on Ash. Pokémon Horizons seems to be getting split into arcs/seasons,
1 Liko and Roy set off
2 The spark of Terapogos
Bc of this I think the first couple seasons/arcs will focus on Liko while the next couple arcs will focus on Roy and it will continue like that throughout the show.
Basically what I’m saying is be patient, Roy will get his time to shine.

It's 6 hero pokemon. It's still a chance that they will spit the pokemon 3/3.
I suppose one would have to look at it as, "...if this character was removed entirely, would it make a difference?" As of right now, I'd say that, no, it wouldn't as Roy hasn't done much.
However, as you stated, this could change. So, let's all hope for Roy's sake!

i enjoy that each are growing and its fun to watch roy does have times were he seem to go full season 1 ash and just "Punch" the issue which isn't a bad thing at times but it does make you go "damn it roy" now ik this is a character flaw which I'm happy about and I think roy and liko are somehow connect to the great adventure somehow I'm not sure
I like Roy and Liko but I think Roy deserved more screen time. He is a nice foil to Liko and his goal to capture Rayquza is good motivation. The writers need to start treating Roy like a main character.

Yeah, she got the spotlight more from then but I think Roy is still gonna get it's due of development that will feel fair to everyone.
The truth is that they are the protagonists and they will get each their own, it will just come in cycles.
Also we know she's Lucius' descendant.
And she's carrying all of his Pokémon. So she got a lot of plot devices recently.

Some people were saying stuff like this for Liko during the Kabu episode.
A lot of that reaction feels like “boys learn how others feel in representation for the first time”.
I kinda love the direction and narrative with Horizons (though yeah Friede does kinda dominate a bit more than I’d like and maybe could give the kids more time to catch and grow).
I also wish we could get more game direction with that mix between shoujo and adventure. Pokemon Magical Journey is my favorite Pokemon manga, and I’d love a game emphasizing living in the world with other people, with bonds and adventure more than primarily battle
Honestly a lesson most boys should or NEED to learn in today's: The world does NOT revolve around them. Thinking so leads to a lot of entitlement whenever things aren't directly being catered to them.
When Roy caught his second pokemon, people were complaining that he was overshadowing Liko.. In the end, Liko ended up catching her second pokemon and now people are complaining about not enough screen time for both of the characters!
In my opinion, I feel that fans should be more patient when waiting for specific character screen times as I am very sure that this series will be quite long and there will be many episodes dedicated to Liko and Roy.
I love both of them very much and throughout the episodes, we can see huge character development from Liko and a bit from Roy. I'm positive that there will be episodes dedicated to Roy, we just have to be patient and wait!
In the end, both of the main protagonists will end up getting their fair share of screen time. :D
Something I thought the moment I saw Roy... All I could think was "Oh... He's just a plot device" that's all that he is to me at the moment, a plot device to drive the story forward. Im mainly watching dubs, however I'm thinking of watching the subs in order to improve my prospective on him... If it even can help him
Roy feels more like an ash clone tbh. Hes more of a pokemon trainer so in the school arc he will likely have more time. Riko is not a pokemon trainer but a pokemon adventurer so when it comes to exploring she will always overshadow him while Roy will overshadow her in battles.
I don't think it's Liko. As usual, I think it's Pokemon's precious mascot, Pikachu. Pikachu is supposed to be a supporting character, right? So then why does it still feel like he's the main honcho? Like, Sprigatito still only knows three moves, and each main character has only caught two Pokemon, meanwhile Cap had an entire episode dedicated to how Friede met him. They're still quite too attached to Pikachu.
Also, I find it funny that people are starting to miss Goh now. Tried to warn you, guys.

As a famale it actually really cool for me bc I never thought we would get a female protagonist in there's kinda of shows.
He's both Ash and Goh 2.0 but without catching everything in sight... Sad he's not getting the spotlight he rightfully deserves
tbh I'm quite used to the protagonist-deuteragonist dynamic in kids anime, specifically because of Pretty Cure. There's always a Lead Cure and the rest of the cast orbits them. So I'm not bothered by it, though I also don't think people are wrong to be disappointed by how little he affects the story so far.
I'm actually chucking a bit because when Horizons was announced, I said something like "now that they're retiring this inaccessibly huge show, they should treat the new anime like toei does precure". I meant it as them doing completely separate year-long seasons with their own characters and self-contained storylines, with the occasional dubiously-canon crossover. Instead, it seems they took away the "we have one Main Character and also other guys who are around and sometimes get the spotlight" thing. Not optimal, but like I said, I'm used to it.
Genuinely, I do hope Roy being tired of playing second fiddle and do something to distinguish himself from his costar.

It doesn't bother me too much if Liko is the most focused on main protagonist,( even though I've never watched any of the pokémon horizons episodes because they haven't been dubbed yet, and I don't live in Japan,) because we've had the main protagonist be a male gender one for multiple years and any female ones were just companion protagonists who would usually get replaced when Ash would travel to whichever region the newest pokemon games would take place in. If they want to let a female character be the #1 main protagonist this time, I think that it's about time for that to finally happen, because in my opinion, the "male protagonist being the #1 protagonist," thing, was previously getting to be too repetitive.
Roy's motto in the beginning of wanting to "challenge the pokemon from the legends" is a metaphor for him wanting to challenge and recapture shiny rayquaza,not the other ancient pokemons. And if you let that sink in,S tier anime!

I dont think Roy should've been marketed as a co-lead in the first place. He's a boy with goals that remind me of Ash and Goh. It DOES feel like he's there to be the SAFE protagonist, whereas Liko is the original protag. Honestly Liko is the stronger protagonist anyway, but there is this stigma in marketing that boys cant identify with girls

No disrespect towards the Japanese #anipoke fandom because while they do make fair and valid points regarding Roy but he’s genuinely my least favorite out because of the lack of interest and even his Fuecoco, Friede, Amethio yet even Dot, Quaxly and the majority of the Explorers are way more interesting while Roy is sadly just a retread of Ash (Satoshi).
Not trying to discredit the Japanese fandom because I genuinely like Roy and his Fuecoco but he’s not as interesting in comparison to Liko and Sprigatito/Hatenna which I prefer more of but both Dot and Quaxly are a very close second to me personally.

I don't have a favorite. Also, I like the dual protagonist setup. But I think the producers need to give Roy new development, have his Pokémon evolve after a certain amount of episodes, & have Liko's Pokémon evolve after a certain amount of episodes. Lastly, I think Friede needs to notice Roy's lack of skill in battle, teach him to be calm, & teach him to improve faster.

The marketing was a lie😩 They said they were dual protagonists but it's just the protagonist and her sidekick. And I thought they were going to be equal in Lucius' background but Liko take overs everything. The Pendant is hers obviously but things REALLY get out off hand now.
Now she keeps all the Pokeballs, she has the descendant bloodline of the guy, even if we go back to the black Rayquaza, it wasn't Roy that caused to go away it was Liko when it saw her. So he doesn't even have a connection with his goal Pokemon 😭
Now looking at it there was NO point of having him here other than to deliver the first PokeBall. You could write this without Roy and I doubt him not being here with her would change her progression. I just feel lied to after thinking he's half of the importance but it's about her. SHE'S the main character.

To be completely honest, it's not jut a problem with Roy, most of the main cast feel kind of superfluous and aren't characters that I can say I care about past a superficial level. I was hoping going into this they'd all get their own moments to shine, but anything they do is few and far between. It focuses so intensely on Liko and to a lesser extent Friede, that eveyone else falls by the wayside. Dot I feel was the only exception, and due to the nature of her character she's prone to taking a backseat as it is. It's a shame, because when it ISN'T about Liko it's really cool. That Murdock episode exploring his past was awesome.
If liko had a personality like ash, it would've been more fun. She's just too humble for a pokemon battle.

I believe there will be an arc where Roy decides to take on the Paldea Gyms. I mean, its just 26 episode, every Pokeanime generation is, at leats, 130 episodes, theres soooo much room for Roy to grow and pursuit another dream, not just catch Rayquaza (and I want him to catch it, not Liko)
Honestly there is no reason why Roy's role couldn't have just been Ash. It wouldn't have invalidated his progress and its totally in character for him to go on an adventure like this. Why they decided to give everyone the vegan option of Ash I don't know. Nobody likes vegan food.
NGL both of them lack ambition and direction. Roy is an Ash season 1 wanna be. And they are trying to make Lico "too relatable" to "normal" kids. Their main difference between them and Ash is that even when Ash was season 1 lvl 5 newbie. He would inspire the people around him to keep pushing forward and never give up. The times he failed felt like it was a real harsh blow. It would make us root for him and cheer him on as he found a way to overcome difficulty. So yeah, Lico and Roy may be relatable, but Ash was inspiring. Ash vs Roy: Ash was genuinely clueless, like we all were when we help a pokemon game for the first time. That's what made him more relatable. Roy is not clueless he is just weak.

The problem is that you people keep comparing 2 different shows and 3 different protagonist when they are not the same and they are not trying to be the same. While the new protagonist might have some of the same characteristics as Ash, this are totally new characters with new goals and they are totally different in other ways. And thats why watching this new story it might not work for everyone, because you are watching Ash all the time, not the new protagonist.
And secondly of course the protagonist are weak and lack direction, they are literaly starting the series with having them now discover the main direction and their goals. If you really waht to keep watching Ash, just go back and watch the whole anime again. If you don't look this story as brand new in every aspect there would be nothing to enjoy then.

That's why I mentioned Ash season 1, not end game. Even if I don't use Ash as comparison, even if I were to say Ash never existed, the only thing carrying the show right now is the nostalgia + fan service. Because having a Charizard and Pikachu hit the nostalgia and a shiny Rayquaza is fan service. But Lico and Roy haven't stepped up yet to say, "THIS IS OUR SHOW". But that's just my opinion. They are not bad by any means they are just weak so far. And no, before you come out with the "if you don't like don't watch" dumb argument, I am watching for the fan service, great animation and nostalgia.

And again for your point of the main characters being weak, of course they are, the atory is just starting, literaly just begun. If you want them to be champion level wait a few years and come back to watch again. How do you expect that the protagonist from the get go, present themselves as strong as Ash, not only in pokemon battles but as a character, without being through character growth. You are expecting them to be fully form protagonist, without having to gain it and that is not gonna happen because this is a new story with new characters, not the protagonist that has gain experience through out his whole story.

I feel like the Pokémon are getting shafted too. They aren’t as important as the main characters obviously, it just feels like Sprigatito did a lot more early on, and even the anime knows Sprig gets shafted every episode, also feels like it’s power level has fallen off as it seemed almost overpowered early on.
Hatenna hasn’t really done anything that I recall, kinda surprising Liko hasn’t tried battling with it. Though it might be because Hatenna being caught was only right before the Terapagos arc. I think it could evolve as it’s still cute but can be more useful. Hatterene is also strong.
Roy’s Fuecoco does have a lot going for it and it seems to like battling a lot. No issues with it, but the anime seems to forget he caught Wattrel. Maybe it’s just me but Wattrel could be useful as a flyer but then Charizard steals all the focus. I also assume at some point that both will catch another Pokémon and those will have to fit in too.
That said though, I’m really enjoying this anime and it feels way more mature than past Pokémon anime’s
