  • I'll walk you through the steps I took to build my DCC++EX Command Station for my Train Room. I've built a second even greater one for my Test Track that will be coming out soon to experiment with EX-Rail. Awaiting on supplies for that project!
    Version 5.0 is in tha making right now with new features such as Track Manager which allows both DC & DCC operation with the same Command Station. A GamePad Magiicee for Engine Driver could be coming also!
    In-depth explanation of the build with additional videos and links to everything mentioned here:

    A good concise introduction to assembling one's own DCCppex system. I have the parts on order. I only wish there was a project box to contain it all.
    BTW, old phones are cheap and make great separate WiFi controllers.

      Thanks! I use my S8 for a throttle. I've been looking for a good project box, but none seem to work out. May have to 3D print one.
      I think I saw a few on the DCC-EX web site available. They were also 3D printed

    To get rid of one wall wart, I bought a 15v dc 5 amp power supply. I split the output to my shield and then my Arduino via a 9v 1-3 amp DC Buck step down converter with either a USB or a 2.1mm diameter plug (center positive). I had to buy a 2.1mm to screw terminal adapter from the Buck to the Arduino.

      That's what I usually do, but for the video I have to keep it simple!

      @@TomsTrainsandThings To me, its simpler in the long run because I only have to later put one plug into the AC outlet. But thats me. Thanks a lot, love your videos.

      Jacob I'd be interested in knowing the exact components you used. I've been on DCC++EX for months now but am using two separate power supplies and it's just cumbersome. Now a huge deal normally but I move my little setup around often.

    • @jacobw446
      @jacobw446 Před 2 lety

      @@Trains-With-Shane I have also used an ATX pc power supply and an atx breakout board, then split the 12v to the motor shield and to the 9v buck (then that to the arduino).

    Hi Tom, first let me say I have no real love of real trains, I could get to London in 1927 seven minutes faster that I can today but last year I became interested in 00Bills CZcams chanell reparing old engines and being a retired engineer through I have a go at that. I brought a old loco off of Ebay and soon it was moving back and forth using a lab power supply and then started to look at for a proper controller but didnt want to spend a lot of money. I found a Zero1 and after some resteration got it working. By then I had realised how much modern controllers were. Duing my research I came across your page and though an Ardunio might be a cost effective way of getting into the hobby plus I could use it as introduction to coding for the grandkids. And here is wher the trouble starts, but with Fred D's help I now have a working controller.
    I think you want to encourage new people to the hobby, and you have said that nearly all the problems encountered are due to lack of knoledge, and I fully concure.BUT you were in at the beginning, and have seen it slowly develop into something quite powerful. Many of us hav'nt. We are starting from cold. You have shown how to set it up BUT other than address 3 how do you get engines to work. I had no idea but Decoder pro seamed to be the answer, but I struggled for 6 months and every time I tried to speak to a n engine I got 308 error code. Finally Fred D in answer to another question included one sentence that told me how to communicate with engines and if I loose that email im buggered. If I had your experance I might of known.
    PLEASE dont assume we have your experiance, assume were idiots and starting from cold. Loved this video but it did leave all of the important communication detail and without it DCC++EX wont fly and all yourr valent efforts will be for nought.

      Thanks for your concern. I cannot start from scratch on every video I produce to walk the uniformed through every step from the very beginning of a topic, this would cause the video to be an outrageous 2+ hour event. I do have over 700 videos and many playlists, over 60 to be exact, that have supporting information that walk the beginner step by step through almost every topic in model railroading.
      Browse through my channel on the Playlist page, there you will see topics such as; JMRI, DCC, DCC++, Arduino Made Easy(er), Arduino Projects, Model Railroading For Beginners, Back To Basics,, Soldering, Electronic Projects, and many more.
      Thanks for watching my video. Fred Decker is a great person with immense knowledge along with many other on the Dev Team. They have helped me out along with many other modelers through problem with DCC++ & EX. I've had a couple of them on my Monday Night Live Stream to help answer questions and give insight to what to expect in the future of DCC++EX.
      Hope you enjoy running trains with your command station!

      @@TomsTrainsandThings thanks for your reply. Understand you can’t cover everything and I have watched many of your videos but can I ask you to direct me to how you program a decoder with DCC++EX

    • @TomsTrainsandThings
      @TomsTrainsandThings  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for the video idea. I do not think you can program directly from the command station without JMRI hooked up. I'll have to check into that!
      I do have a few videos where I program an engine through JMRI but with Digitrax. It should be the same if you have JMRI set up for DCC++EX. I find it much easier to program with JMRI. I'll have to do some research in my videos. I know I showed using JMRI with DCC++, and how much faster it was as opposed to with Digitrax hooked up. II may have that embeded in a video titled something else. I'll look for it!

    Hi Tom! Love your videos. I have also immersed myself in model railroading via DCC++EX. I recently read where one of the Railcom patents was repealed. Here's why I mention this. I want to take some decoder board (not sure which one because I bet most won't do this), put a series of magnets at the beginning of each block, have a hall sensor attached to the outside of the locomotive. As it passes, it shifts a binary code, unique to each block, and stores it in a temporary register in the decoder board. During the cutout, the decoder will send the block information along with anything pertinent with the Railcom data. I know that all kinds of goodies can be bought to send block data trackside, but it makes no sense to me that magnets, a hall sensor, and the utilization of the Railcom cutout isn't the best way to go. Could you please enlighten me? :)

    I am building a new DCC EX CS for my HO layout. I use a DCC EX to power my N scale and I have enough power to control kato turnouts using NCE switch-kats. On the HO layout there is not enough power to control my HO Kato turnouts using the same Switch-kats. Using the Digitrax Super Chief with 5 amps and 14 volts I have no isuue. I see you are using 15 volt power supplies on motor shields rated at 12 volts. Can I put my HO transformer 15 volts with 5 amps that was being used on the Digitrax system and hook up to the Arduino motor shield without blowing it? I noticed you are using 3 amp transformers. Have you had any issues? I really appreciate you videos as few others are running HO with DCC ++ EX. Thanks :)

      Your power supply is only going to output what the system requires . So if you are running only one Loco, it will draw 0.015 Amp under normal conditions

      You can save individual folders where you entered data and copy them to the new instalation if you are refering to older versions of DCC-EX. Not sure about the original DCC++. You would have to ask that question on the DCC-EX Discord discord.gg/vesg38fE
