  • I took a day off van building to visit the Caravan, Camping and Motorhome show at Birmingham's NEC. There I not only saw lots of lovely campervans but also met up with Theo and Bee from The Indie Projects, Shaun and Lizzy from California Camping, Andrew Ditton, Dan Trudgian, Ian from Caravan Gossip, the Explorer Buddies, Make Way with the Morleys, Around The World In As Long As It Takes and had a really good chat about van building with The Adventures of Sarah and James.
    If you liked the video and wish to leave me a tip, thank you!

    Side loading pop top might work well with solar panels on it for getting the best angle to the sun. Good side benefit at least.

    Interesting show, the humble camper van has come along way since the kombi’s. The Fiat, Mercedes, Renault’s do make a great base and what they fit inside really is incredible, one thing I really noticed is the amount of pop or lift tops in your market ours are the higher roof models mainly. 🚌

    Excellent video bro so thanks for taking us along, for me I am liking the pop up style camp trailer for when I retire. Easy to tow and move around by hand, nothing flash just something that does the job. I can sleep in my vehicle comfortably if need be so only really need somewhere as a kitchen and to lounge about when the weather is wet. All the best.

    Brilliant Video and so speedily put together - but you would never know. Nicely paced and a very well balanced selection of items visited including the Stars of CZcams with your usual dry delivery. I don't see why you would not have space for at least a Grill in your Van, even if it was only fixed under the hobs.

    • @Vandemonium
      @Vandemonium  Před 6 lety

      Because the kitchen unit is going over the wheelarch (it'll become clear when I do it) so there may not be the space below for a grill. My layout is not the optimal use of space but it's the layout I like.

    It is interesting to note the size of the campers and vans in the UK vs the one in the US. If you ever get to the US in January, you must visit the camper show at the IX center in Cleveland, OH. It is the largest indoor show in the US. This year they had over 800 units to look at. I had to chuckle when I saw the Dometics sign. The factory is a short drive from us and we have a bunch of their stuff in our camper. Thanks for the video.

    Great to see the show on your video as I can't visit this year. It was a pity they removed the boats a few years ago as I used to enjoy ogling all the lovely and expensive crafts, as well as the camper vans etc. I now have a small river cruiser based at Wyre Mill on the River Avon which you passed last year on your way from Tewkesbury to Stratford. Feel free to pop in to the club if you're ever down that way again and I'll buy you a gin and tonic.

    Have you considered a free standing tent awning that zips onto the side or rear door of the van? Gives tons of additional space and you can leave it up if you go off site in the van for the day.

      Vandemonium
      Had an old VW Transporter, 26 years ago!
      We (my 2 sons and I ) came to Germany in it!
      When we were here, I had to get it converted (fit new windows, and get the roof and sides, etc.) fitted out to comply with the German version of the MOT!
      We got the necessary bits from a scrap yard, and 'old green' was finally registered.
      UNFORTUNATELY, I let a neighbour use her to transport a few things.
      Didn't have to use her for a few days, but when I did there was a terrible noise😕😠
      There was a rather bad problem with the (don't know what it's called) connection to the back axle😢
      Goodness knows what they'd transported in her, but bolts were loose, and in those days , I did my own repairs, with help!
      2 bolts had sheared, I couldn't afford the repair (not knowing, at that time, that the problem wasn't so serious, but having 2 kids...) had to sell her, and she's probably still on the road somewhere in Poland😯😐
      Now, at 61, I really 'take part' in your videos 😊☺
      Don't have the confidence any more to do such things, but enjoy every bloody minute through your eyes😊
      All love, and best wishes, Claire, Berlin

    I am glad you did another channel. I remember when you were doing Cruising The Cut you once mentioned about doing a van and then opted for the canal boat. Having lived in California and owning a 31" foot RV (Recreational Vehicle) it was interesting to see how many features they pack in to those small vans in UK - not to mention the price of some. Still have you ever checked some of those $500,000 diesel pusher coaches in the USA? Nuts. I expect to see some good cruising on the cut, this up and coming summer. I heard summer was on a Wednesday this year ;-) Keep up the good work. I am from Derby originally but I am watching Vandemonium from my home in Philippines so you have a worldwide audience. We see a lot of Van-Lifers doing the Baja peninsula in Mexico where our other home is, it's a really popular route type in Baja and Van Life there's loads of good info

    a meet and greet featuring the indie projects... wow. they are the UK's slightly less annoying version of bec and eamon. all about van life until they got a little cash and weren't. I wish them well.

  • @alejandrayalanbowman367

    I am amazed the way they install swivel seats in the front to enable four people to sit round a table but only two beds. Is one always expected to have visitors or is an awning for additional sleeping, a compulsory addition?

    • @Vandemonium
      @Vandemonium  Před 6 lety

      I think it's partly in anticipation of other campers coming to join you for a meal or a drink etc; also many of the campers with pop-top / hightop roofs have a sleeping compartment up there, so you can get four people in (albeit in very close proximity!)

    Campers are not that bad, but most lack something I could never do without: My own bathroom (with shower, toilet and a sink!)...seriously, what's the first thing you do in the morning - right: You take a shower and I for one don't want to share that with others, seriously I am grumpy in the mornings and I wouldn't make any friends trecking to a public shower-facility!

      Near the end of that presentation 7:00 onwards, David did show a couple with both shower and toilet, cosy but your own. I totally agree with you shared facilities are terrible, freezing your butt and other vitals off, sharing a shower, toilet and basin.

  • @grahamhardyvanlife5704

    4:24 it's not necessarily unusual David it's gas regulations that make the cooker have to go there. It's a legal requirement as the nv200 is not tall enough.

    • @Vandemonium
      @Vandemonium  Před 6 lety

      I've seen other NV200 conversions with a more conventional stove placement. Are you certain or merely speculating? (not accusing, genuinely curious)

    • @grahamhardyvanlife5704
      @grahamhardyvanlife5704 Před 6 lety

      Vandemonium talk to Danbury camper vans they said it's the law (minimum hight) and the nv200 is something like 20cm lower than the vw citoren Toyota size vans it makes all the difference.

    • @Vandemonium
      @Vandemonium  Před 6 lety

      I remain unconvinced about it being the law but I'll look into it if ever I get the appropriate opportunity! Cheers.

    You should get yourself a second-hand fibreglass High-Top for your van (Available at ALL reputable Scrappie's) Multi-van options, cut to fit - Hey Presto!! ... You can now stand up and 'not' send yourself to an early Wheelchair situation .... #OOPS!! :-(

    • @Vandemonium
      @Vandemonium  Před 6 lety

      I suspect it's not so much the top itself as the frame it needs to sit on which might be the problem, since that frame needs to compensate for the loss of strength through removal of a large chunk of roof :-(

    • @CheckFred
      @CheckFred Před 6 lety

      Vandemonium You'll probably find that big thick trunking that goes around the top of your van is 'more' capable than you think.
      (Your roof is just the tin-lid :-)

    • @Crimsonedge1
      @Crimsonedge1 Před 6 lety

      It could be a good idea to lift the roof purely for comfort levels but if you plan on driving round regularly, its space vs fuel economy. High Cubes use quite a bit more fuel. The losses are usually more than 5% vs a regular height van. Hell, something as simple and small as leaving your roof racks on your car can increase drag and thus fuel usage significantly. Doesn't matter for trips around town at low speed of course but drag increases with speed thus with motorway travel, such a simple thing as the air around us can really drain your pocket of money. Plus, as David said in a previous episode, he'll spend more time in it sleeping than he will stood up. I imagine the rest of his time will be spent out of the van seeing the new sights of the places he visits. Return to the van on an evening, get his head down and then out the next day.
      Naturally it needs to be a place to retreat to when the weather is bad but on the few days where its bad, an afternoon chilling out on the bed and watching TV or editing videos won't be such a bad thing.

    • @Vandemonium
      @Vandemonium  Před 6 lety +7

      I'm not sure what there is to "manage"? When I'm out cruising on the boat, I'll park the van safely somewhere. When I'm moored, I'll have the van for weekends or short trips.

    You did not know there was a civilised way to carry dog poop ? How are you carrying it into your van - on the sole of your shoe? that's so last year !!! Just out of interest I wonder what the civilised way actually is; hopefully keeping it inside the dammed dog. Very nice vans there pity the prices were as eye watering as unwanted dog poop.

  • @CyclingClaire
    @CyclingClaire Před 4 lety

    I can't understand it. A restart of my ancient Samsung tablet, a 10.1 2014 edition, cured the problem so my humblest apologies for doubting your technical skills. I am putting this here instead of just deleting my post just in case you ever get similar idiots whining about your vlogs again. Truth is that it took five minutes of Nelson biographer describing his early life, Nelson's not his own, for me to realise that I was at fault and not you. That sorted, of interest may be that my 18th century cottage has deep rope cuts in the corner of the brickwork as you describe elsewhere. But, alas, the Cut was abandoned in the fifties and is now little more than a line on the map. If I say that I live about 3 miles NE of Shrewsbury that will explain.
